I currently play the Hawkeyes 1998 models and seem to do good with them. Thoughts for replacements for these? I was looking through ebay and found the M4's they look nice and kind of the same. Any suggestions for high handicapper. Looking for something to help keep the ball straight.

If anything, the M4 (and those kinds of irons) can make your ball fly less straight. I won't get into why. Irons like the M4 should be used for golfers who add a lot of dynamic loft at impact so they end up needing less static loft on the club to help them get more distance. If you've got some decent impact conditions, irons like M4 might cause you to really spin the ball low, especially if you don't have a lot of club head speed. It will be extremely hard for you to hold greens.

I suggest a fitting, but if you can't/won't, something with a 7i loft around 30-31* I believe is probably more reasonable. P790s, Apex CF19, etc could be better than the extremely strong lofted M4 irons. The ball flying straight is much more of a face to path relationship issue, and much less of which irons you play.

Hey thanks for the information. Yeah man irons that spin and hold greens would be great as long as the forgiveness isn't compromised all that much. I only like to go up to a 5 iron, don't care of the 4 iron that much. Driver swing speed is 95 on average.

Those P790's look really nice. I'm assuming these you can grow into and as your handicap goes down these will continue to help.

I don't even think of handicap when it comes to clubs and what you should use, people can be outliers. I play to a 12.9 right now according to the latest update and I play MP20's (blades) and can drive the ball 280+ no problems. There's also people at the other end who are 0 index and don't even drive the ball 250 on a good day. You have to look specifically at how you hit irons, which may or may not make up a large portion of your strokes lost per round. I personally think I hit my irons a lot better than most 13's do, but I happen to putt pretty bad.

Anyway, I'd say anybody from the low indexs (guys on here like TollBro's who is an extremely good player and drives the ball 340+ uses P790s) up to guys who routinely shoot 90s can use 790's. I even used the P790 4i all of last year, after using 4-PW in all of 2018. Solid clubs, verrrryyy long. Pretty low spin still, but they will hold greens better than M4's. If you find maybe the flight is still a bit too low spin, you can always add a degree of loft on the clubs and also use a higher spinning ball. Many high index players think they "aren't good enough" to use ProV1's but in fact I think they should really consider using them because it will help elevate the ball much more and hold greens better than what OEMs push at them, which is low spin, soft golf balls (think Calalway Supersoft, etc).

Bit of a rant but hopefully that helps you, GL.

@LeoLeo99
The Hawkeyes don't really spin much and my new irons I bought just go really far and are way to heavy. I need more accurate irons, the misses are killing my GIR's.

That's a ton of great info. I actually have ProV1's in my bag I use to play. I also have some E6's I like them both. Sounds like a good combination of the two, ball and club.

The golf ball can make a HUGE impact to your flight. I was fit in November 2018 into some irons and we tried Chrome Soft X and TP5X golf balls after the irons were settled. The TP5X spun 600-800rpm less than the CSX did, and launched a degree or two higher. Overall that meant more run out and a little less control. It's never a bad thing to gain a little distance on our irons but these are meant to hit greens and then stop within a small distance.

I do highly recommend a legit fitting though if you can. Also, have realistic expectations. If you really play to a 23.3 index, I'd wager hitting just 1-2 GIR a round would be pretty good. New clubs might help improve this but I'd also wager spending $$ on lessons might help improve that GIR number, too ;) ;) Enjoy!

Yeah probably just hitting 1 - 2 a 18 is about right. Usually off a wedge after a big blast from the tee box or sometimes a short par 3. At times it feels like my 7 iron is more accurate than my 9 iron.....

I'm going to do some research on fitters, I just want to know how much these irons are going to cost. I keep telling myself I am content with my clubs but I k now that old tech is killing my GIR's even it's cost me 1 more a round that's way too much.

Agree about lessons, but I just took 3 recently so I want to back off and try to work some of those changes in slowly.... I feel going a bunch doesn't really help.

Ping.com --- it's all there, but a Ping dealer in your area will do the same for you for nothing (okay I've never had a local pro charge if I'm actually ordering the clubs, and yes there are different "fitters" and what they offer) and I'd always recommend that, but from a static fitting measurement standpoint, a great tool - now, from a fitter measuring dynamically --- you won't know unless you go. Or wait for spring and find a demo day in your area - great way to get into clubs if those kinds of things happen where or near where you live.

Now, I think the chart may be different than it was many years ago (going from memory on that) so if you are buying an older set online who knows as far as the color codes/lengths.

I got my oldest daughter into G5s when they weren't the current offering any more though Ping. You used to be able to buy new "old" sets at a very substantial discount through Ping - again, a local pro/dealer could tell you if Ping still does that. IMO that was the absolute best bargain around.

@Paddy_2_Iron, if you only switch irons once every two decades, you might consider an in-person fitting. A real, live fitter would use dynamic swing data. This measures what happens when you actually hit the ball. The Ping online fittings only use static data like wrist-to-floor measurements.
Buying irons hit and miss without testing them out can cost you more time and $$ than simply buying a new fitted set.
Are you located in USA, British Isles, Europe? USA is a much easier place to get a fitting.
Several of the GI model iron heads fitted with a helpful shaft will work well for +20 HDCP golfers.
If you're interested in Callaway, the Rogue model (discontinued recently) with a helpful shaft would be good.
Here are some prior-cycle models from Ping: G25, G, and G Max. G400 also worth trying. Ping offers multiple stock shafts in its irons.

You wanted your previous thread closed because you didn't like the responses you were getting, so you decided to start a new one? IMO, you should just play your Hawkeyes and stop spending money on clubs. Improve your ball striking until you get better then upgrade to a newer set of GI style irons that you can find USED for under $400. Last bit is important, but stay AWAY FROM MASTERFIT!

I appreciate the insights.

I'm going to take a look at those irons you listed. A member has some G700 for sale, I really like the look of those. I might just buy them and get new shafts put on them if required. Really considering this.

I don't feel the hawkeyes are optimized and the MF are really heavy. The heads feel like I have to alter my swing when I take my back swing. I usually have a cupped wrist at the top.

If you are looking for suggestions on irons for a higher handicap player, I’m sure there have been lots of these topics in the past. In this instance the search function is your friend to try and find those topics.

However you can’t fault anyone here for getting annoyed that you have brought this topic up again. Here is a direct quote from a post on the 6th of January on page 4(can’t post the link from my phone):

’but what in the heck was I thinking trying to replace these Hawkeyes? They are fantastic irons for 20 handicaps. Forgiving and really respond on thin hits’

You have answered your own question here, keep playing the Hawkeyes. Don’t change until you are atleast a 15, build up other parts of your bag, replace that masterfit **** one piece at a time and just go out and play the game. Get some lessons, fix up your swing until it’s repeatable and then look at some new irons.

You mentioned you are looking for a replacement to help the ball go straight? No shaft and iron combo will do that for you, some may be a little more forgiving yes, but it won’t go straight until the face to path relationship is fixed up.

I may be ranting here, but you have also started one or two threads like this in the instruction section. More often than not the questions you are asking may have already been asked so you may find answers already posted rather than starting new threads. And then to compound that, when knowledgeable people give you advice you dont seem to take it onboard and listen, you get defensive and it creates hostility and arguments and people get annoyed (and great reading might I add).

A good way to find older threads is to either use search, or google your topic and write golfwrx. Eg: ‘best irons for high handicap golfwrx’ will give you a lot of previous threads so will require you to read them but there is already so much knowledge in this forum, so go back and have a look through it.

Like a wise man once said. It’s the Indian not the arrow. Play your Hawkeyes and be done with it. If you want to hit more greens, hit the practice range and go to work. As a 23 cap you can not be expecting to hit a lot if greens. Understand you will miss most of them and work on your chipping and putting. Up and downs get the cap down. New irons will not turn you into a ball striking machine but practice will.
