Need Hickory Help

I just bought my first few hickory clubs. I am looking to get some of these looking great. I have some questions that I need help with

1) The shafts look a little dry. What should I apply to them to get them a little better? I am also wondering if I should put on a new stain?

2) Most of them need new grips. If I read it correctly I need friction tape a leather wrap and a tack to hammer a tack on at the top to keep it in place.

3) The Spoon I bought is very dull. It looks like it could also use a nice new stain and coating. Thoughts on that?

4) Had to pull the pin on one to reset. Going to use epoxy. That being said how should I repin them? What should I use as a pin?

welcome to hickory. I like doing basic restoration; enough to make them playable and protected without removing the character that the clubs have developed for over 100 years. With woods I usually remove the finish with stripper gel and a soft wire brush (head and shaft)(I also leave the grip on) I then sand lightly, starting with 200 grit and then going to 600 grit (both head and shaft). I don’t usually sand enough to remove dents and dings. I like how they look and I don’t want to remove too much swing weight. I then will apply stain. I usually like doing the head, face and shaft different tones. Wipe the stain off and let it sit for 24 hours.

next comes the spar urethane coats. I use a spray can from big box stores. This is a difficult stage. Even coats, dust free, proper drying time, sanding between coats. I tend to put 4 coats on the head and two on the shaft. Once everything is dry I do the whipping and grip. I buy leather strips and grip with the suede side out.
