I wouldnt doubt it. I got the same email, but I dont even play the P(a) anymore since I moved to a 'tour/pro' ball.

It was a great ball as in - well priced and urethane - but I think it took sales away from the TP5 line for no reason. On the same token I think it was a nice stepping stone for people to ease into urethane balls; but i'm sure that was only a minuscule percentage of golfers.

These days there's basically two ball categories; beginner balls with Surlin/Ionomer and 'tour/pro' balls with urethane and these are $15-25 to $35-45 of golf balls. Thats it.

it could also be an email to 'test' a new replacement. but we'll see....

I think balls like the q star tour, Wilson duo pro, and project (a) are in a tough spot. The main reason to use them was price, as the tour balls from those companies will perform better for most golfers.

And if you are buying strictly on price, their are a lot of DTC balls that beat them on price.

Bridgestone basically engineered this market and despite marketing campaigns scoffing at the notion of a softer tour style urethane covered ball, it’s become very popular with a decent segment of the bell curve of amateur golfers.

I can see where it makes more sense to cut this line than other companies because imo the TP5 is probably the tour ball that most overlaps it’s softer urethane counterpart from a feel aspect.

This is interesting. In my humble opinion I think they bungled the marketing of this ball, big time. First off, I found this ball to be very long off the driver in its earlier version (the one with the seam). I went through an odd short time a couple years ago when I was swinging the driver well and I sent that earlier Project a ball on some massive drives. My son grabbed my phone out at Ancil once and video'd me driving it 325 down a damp fairway. (I hope that's on my old phone he cracked up..) Of course it had the soft feel and what I thought was excellent performance around the green to go along with that. Then, I wandered away from that ball and, in the meanwhile, they reformulated the Project a to a different product. I did try the version without the seam and it didn't stand out to me. Never, did I see them really marketing this ball and I have to wonder if that may be tied to the fact that it wasn't on tour (as far as I know). I certainly think it was tour-worthy and I'd A/B it with balls like the Chrome Soft. Anyway, I just think they bungled it. And, it didn't help that the less-impressive version of the ball (IMO) included a jump in price putting it probably just beyond the range for which it was (or wasn't) marketed.

if this is true my mate i play with is going to be bummed real bad as he loves Project A.

he started on TMs entry level ball, Aeroburner Soft & Pro, Burner Soft etc then i gave him a Project A i had found OB at my local to try, he was hooked straight away, more distance off driver, FWs and irons, he got a few boxes.

i have given him a couple TP5 to try that i have also found, however they are not for him, he loves his Project A.

personally, i dont mind it off driver, but i dont like it after that, of the mid price TM balls, i personally still think Penta TP & Penta TP3/TP5 is a great ball.

now on the other hand Project S, thats a ball that i dont understand one bit...

I actually found one a few rounds ago and really liked it. Great performance from tee to green for me. Was thinking about picking some up next time I need to reload. Shame.

To be honest, I think Bridgestone is the Project A's grim reaper. They proved with the Tour B RX/S line that you can charge a premium price for a urethane ball meant for more average swing speeds. Once a market is established, everyone follows suit. I can't imagine the Tour Response ball will be far off in price from the TP5 line.

Note for ball shoppers: there are always deals out there. No matter what ball you play, you can almost always find a deal somewhere or another that'll knock your price down to the $25 range. Just hunt for them. If you don't like this route, find a guerrilla ball you like and buy in bulk (like Snell, Vice, OnCore, etc). The days of $40+ dozens, at least for me, or long gone.

I don't think it has anything to do with Bridgestone. If anything, they myth that you need a softer ball for lower swing speeds is being debunked. I think the real issue here is DTC balls. The costs of making a ball like the Q-Star Tour or Project(a) probably isn't a whole lot different than a Z-Star or TP5. So selling them at a lower price means less margin. The people buying these balls are also often looking to save a little money vs the tour ball. If you can get a DTC ball that promises tour ball performance at the same cost as a Project(a) or Q-Star Tour, that starts looking like a good idea. The almost tour ball at $30/dozen is a hard sell when you can get balls that promise tour level performance at the same price. Which means the big ball makers are going to focus on their high margin balls and the low end balls.
