Agree or disagree (arms in backswing)

After you get the arms to the 1st parallel position during the takeaway,

lift the arms to the top with the feeling that body is fairly passive.

For me personally I disagree. That's what I think is generally considered to be a 'two plane' swing. That doesn't work for me. It seems to be adding an extra step (lifting and lowering the arms) to the swing that I don't need and can't reliably do. The only arm feeling I have is reaching out until parallel from then on to the top it's all chest and a bit of a hip turn.

But we all have our own way of swinging and our own feelings about what we're doing (which can often be wrong).

Disagree. For me the back swing is one motion, both hands swinging the club over the trail shoulder with the body responding.

If you mean that the left arm is parallel to the target line (P3), I disagree. From that point on, only the shoulders turn and the arms do nothing.

Yes but not sure about passive body but I like to keep forearm and elbow funny business to a minimum.

So from that parallel position, the primary motion is an arm lifting motion?

I guess everyone is saying no, but that's what it looks like in the photos.

pic 1(left): you can only see a little of the left shoulder blade.

 

pic 2(right): you can clearly see his right shoulder blade

 

JT is clearly using his back/body from P3 to P4 not arms.

 

if only the arms lift, you will only still see his left shoulder blade with high arms in the 2nd pic.

disagree. i feel more body turn around my axis, be that hip or shoulder turn. if i let the arms go past that, or feel they are moving independent of the body, i get into trouble. But my backswing is flatter and shorter than most.

Right elbow isn’t lifting at all relative to his body. He’s turned 35+* between the two photos. How do you think the right shoulder moves from over right foot to just inside left foot?

Some interesting ideas on whether shoulder turn will elevate the arms or if they need to be moved independently.

 

Should I lift the arms? Should I keep them passive? Does the shoulder turn elevate the arms?

They body turn and arms move together. I believe the lift in the hands comes from the folding of the rear arm.

Prob is what you mean by "fairly passive" ..... it might feel very passive to some and very engaged to others even if it looks the same cause feels are different for every player

explained poorly IMO. The left is lifted, by the eighth arm folding. The right arm doesn’t actually have to lift at all relative to the body. The shoulder turn absolutely elevated the arms, combined with the trail arm folding. The arms aren’t actually lifting

Trail elbow and shoulder move parallel to each other. In the animation the player’s shoulder are turning steeper than they rotated the perspective, meaning they aren’t turning parallel to the “ground” in that view. The elbow elevation in that swing comes from the shoulder turning on a tilted angle. The reason the hands are high and the left arm is higher is because the elbow bends.

 

This has has already been covered multiples times on this forum when that video was posted

 

 

I posted these before but these are multiple PGA Tour winners I rotated it so shoulders are actually parallel to X axis. Can see elbow doesn’t lift

Confused. How do the arms get to the 1st parallel position? Do they lift?

Also, isn't the takeaway defined as a much shorter movement than arms parallel?

One more, how can both arms be parallel? Seems like lead arm would be but only half of the trail arm is parallel.

Final, I think of none of that ever and never have.
