Ginty Insert

Wanted to show what I've been up to of late, and that is this Stan Thompson Ginty which had been living literally outside:

So I had to set out making an insert for it and otherwise cleaning it up. I tried and failed to preserve the crown decal, but otherwise I think I did pretty well. Pictures of the whole process coming momentarily...

 

The first step was finding suitable material. The original insert would have been a white/red affair cast of epoxy or plastic glued in place. I decided to go the ABS plastic route, but that's any color so long as it's black. The first step was cutting and gluing a piece to fit the insert cavity:

This was done by running the plastic through a bandsaw to make a strip at the correct angle, sliding the angled bar into the club, and trimming for size once fit.

Then it was simply a matter of shaping and sanding and filing down the plastic. This took about an hour.

I used a small saw to re-carve the score lines in the face, and had to use JB weld epoxy to be able to blend the insert with the Ginty sole plate, as the sanding and shaping operations meant that the joint was no longer flush. The club was also stained and re-urethaned in the usual fashion, and the original whipping reinstalled. I think it came out pretty decently, but I am going to hold off on hitting it while the polyurethane cures fully. If nothing more, at least it looks like a golf club again. I'm not sure what happened to the decal between the last two pictures. That's about my only disappointment with this project, but something to keep in mind for next time.

Nice job James.

Reminds me of back in the eighties when customers would bring in woods with broken or missing inserts. I got pretty skilled at pouring epoxy inserts. Much less work involved. Kudos to you for tackling a tough task.
