2020 Callaway Mavrik drivers, fairway woods, hybrids (in-hand pics)

So honest feedback after spending an hour with my gamer shaft with both the standard And SZ models in the same loft.

Mavrik

No major ball speed improvements vs Flash SZ but huge improvement in:

Spin consistency (2000 to 2600)

Sound - muted but not dead

Feel - solid but not harsh

Hands down the best feeling and sounding Callaway Driver I’ve ever hit, and probably top 3 of all time.

SZ

Fade biased for me

Very Penal

Super low spin

Amazing sound and feel

Best BS I got was 167 with Standard and 164 with SZ. This pic below was my highest spin with Standard

Both heads were 10.5

Just hit all the new SIM and Mavriks again to try to zero in on one model. Initially, the standard Mav was working the best, but after I hit a ton of balls, I finally decided to give the 9* SZ a try, even though I thought it wouldn't be great. Oh, was I wrong. The 9* with the Rogue 70x and weight back was the most consistent of all of them. I love the look as well. Was not spinning too low for me. Honestly, they are all good and everything on good shots was the same ballspeed. Love the look and feel on both lines, but I slightly prefer the look of the SIMs and slightly prefer the sound and feel of the Mavriks. I would be super happy to just buy a stock Mav with the Rogue, but would def need to get some kind of custom shaft on the Taylormade, just a personal preference.

This probably won't help you too much, but it wasn't really about the numbers it was just the consistent shot shape and center face contact was better on the SZ which admittedly could have been mostly due to the shaft being a better fit for me timing wise as well as the shape and lie angle visually giving me confidence. The shapes are different, but the Standard is definitely noticeably more upright at address and puts the thought of a hook in my mind. I had the Rogue 70x in the SZ and the Riptide in the Standard head, so not apples to apples. Good drives with both basically got the same numbers across the board. With the Standard the misses were floaty spinny over-draws and spinny blocks, with the SZ the misses were a more punishing diving hook, but the blocky right misses were less spinny and less punishing which is more of my main miss. I would be happy with either, and should probably test the Standard head with a shaft that I time better, but I really prefer the look at address of the SZ. It doesn't look as forgiving, but I think it gives a look like you are going to hammer it and I just like it.

I played 18 with SZ on Thursday and hit standard mavrik today. The SZ was very low spin but I was bombing it into the wind. Definitely a little fade bias and the sound was higher pitched. Standard Mavrik was more muted, a bit higher spin (needed for me) and great feel. I would stick with the standard if I had to choose but mostly for a bit more spin.

That’s exactly why people’s review on shape are completely subjective. A 58* lie angle didn’t seem upright at all, even in 10.5*, but I could see how someone with a really inside out move would need SZ at 56* lie.

Just like trying to explain to someone that eye dominance plays a huge part in a face looking open or shut.

Can one that tried all the new Mavrik clubs please advise which model is the same as the OG Epic Sub Zero from a few years back? Specifically the OG Epic SZ 9 deg. driver with heavy weight in the back of the head. That club pretty much had ideal launch conditions for me, and I want to try and replicate with the new Mavrik, but obviously with improved speed/consistency :)

Thanks in advance!

I owned the OG epic SZ in 9* and only ever played it weight back. To me that club was very fade biased and I had a tough time turning it over. It was fun to have because I could just aim left and swing away knowing it would either go straight or fade, but I ended up getting rid of it because I like to be able to hit it both ways if I can and I just couldn't get that thing to move right to left. The Mavrick SZ today, I was hitting nice draws almost every shot. I'm sure I could have faded it too, but didn't try. The face looks like it has some onset to it which makes me think left to right would be no problem. The other difference to me would be that the OG SZ shape seemed a bit shallower and flatter crown while the Mavrik SZ seems deeper faced and rounder crown a maybe shorter front to back. I think the standard Mavrik may look a bit more similar to the OG SZ at address, actually.

Ordered my full set of Mavrik clubs yesterday trading in all of the equivalent Rogue clubs I’ve played for two years, got the 150% trade in no problem. Starting with standard model in each club type. I would also like to get the Mavrik trolley bag that historically for some bizarre reason Callaway has only sold outside the (U.S.). Not like that deters me...I got a Rogue version of the bag anyway and love it. Anyone know when Callaway typically releases all of the branded accessories for new lines? At the PGA show? I know they go fast.

Shiels got less distance with the Mavrik compared to the Flash. Great, now the machines are destroying drivers. Where’s Arnold Schwarzenegger when you need him?

Going to order through Callaway because of their values and the bonus. For those that have done this- at what point do you receive your bonus? I assume you order with the clubs you want to trade in and you get the credit back to your card once they get your clubs? I have quite a few items I want to trade in.

thanks!

Correct. You won’t see the bonus reflected on your order, but you should get a “credit” or refund email once your trade has been processed with the quoted amount + bonus.

I would recommend taking a look at the trade-in bonus terms. I submitted mine yesterday and I’m pretty sure the fine print mentioned something about a max of 3 clubs traded in per club purchased. May want to call Callaway to confirm.

Thanks. Would be trading an iron set for the driver, fairway for a fairway. Hope that works.

Should be good. This is the first part of the terms: "Offer valid 1/14/20 – 1/27/20. For Irons purchase, trade-in no fewer than six (6) and up to nine (9) eligible irons/hybrids/wedges and for woods purchase, limit 3 club trade-in per club purchased." Whether they enforce that or whether they have in the past, I'm not sure. Don't think I've ever traded in more than 3 clubs.

HIt the Maverick 9* Standard and SZ along with the 9* SIM Standard today. Must say my best numbers were with the SZ. I am coming from a Rogue SZ and not a long ball hitter by any stretch and I was getting total cary distances in the very low 300's with the Maverick SZ which is really, really good for me. I tend to hit the ball high and with a lot of spin. I first tried with the 1" shorter riptide stock shaft and that was pretty good but then I put in my Ventus Black 6S at 43.75" and it was even better (heavy weight in the back). Good strikes were launching at 12* and spinning at around 2200 RPM's so, for me it looks like its going to be a Maverick SZ. The Maverick Standard spun a little too much for me. The SIM was good and I love the look of it but the performance of the Maverick SZ was just better for me. Going to get in a couple more sessions with the SZ before pulling the trigger though.

Just had my first experience of the Mavrik sub zero after our saw it sitting their calling me at the range.

Wasn’t expecting much to be honest as I had a epic sub zero for a very limited time, just found it a little wild!

what a surprise! Testing it alongside my Ping G410 plus I found it no harder to it and super consistent, just a nice tight draw after draw.

wasn't expecting to be considering buying a new driver this year but if after further testing I’m hitting the shots like I just did I would be happy to drop the $$$
