Quick review 2020 drivers SIM, Mavrik, Cobra SZ

Recommended Posts

Spent a bunch of time on Trackman with all the new stuff. SIM is the winner for me. I hit the SIM, SIM Max Mavrik, Mavrik SZ and new Cobra. All are very good especially in the sound and feel dept. Nice solid thwack sound and feel all around. Well done by all 3.

For me I got the best performance from the standard SIM w the sliding weight put half way between the toe and center. I found it to he very consistent from a ball speed, spin and ball flight standpoint. My current gamer Rogue SZ Tour V was pretty similar when hit well but not quite as consistent on mishits especially low on the face. I also really like the look of the SIM. Very nice, pear shape and sets up perfectly.

SIM Max looks even a little better than the standard SIM due to the slightly deeper face but it spun too much for me.

Mavrik is very good I prefer the shape of this one to the SZ though I don't like how straight the face is. They seemed to have carried that over from the Epic Flash Triple Diamond to both the Mavrik and the Mavrik SZ. I prefer the bulge and roll and look at address of the SIM over both Mavriks. I got a hair too much spin from the Mavrik but ball speed etc were all good.

Mavrik SZ I don't like the extreme taper of the top of this driver like most of the previous SZ drivers. I like the flatter/higher top of the SIM or even the normal Mavrik. Numbers were slightly better than the normal Mavrik but not any better than my Rogue SZ V and I prefer the shape of the V.

Cobra SZ nice driver hair too much spin didn't love the kinda blocky shape. Could play but prefer SIM.

Cobra SZ Max similar to above but little more spin.

Tried a bunch of shafts but I'm most consistent with my previous gamer which is an Aerotech Ti Fiber 60. I was able to try all the above w that shaft.

Also the SIM Ti fwy wood is a CANNON.

Mavrik SZ fwy woods r also very good.

I walked away with a SIM which will be my first TM driver since the first 2016 M2 which was not in my bag for long. I have almost exclusively gamed Callaway drivers since the first Epic and even back to the 815 DD. So this is a bit of a departure for me but SIM will get its shot at the gamer spot in Scotland. Need to see it on the course v the V which has treated me VERY well since I got it.

Got a SIM Ti 3w to try also but that will have a tough time making the bag.

Both will be tested in Dallas Tuesday /Wednesday on course.

On course report coming after.

Its always so cool to see how different clubs work for different people. I've owned 7 TM drivers and for the past 15 years ive only gamed a TM driver. Without hitting any of the new stuff I was ready to upgrade to the SIM........

but the Mavrik SZ won for me. I couldn't hit the SIM for some reason. Even with my fitted shaft from my m5, the m5 gave me way better numbers than the SIM and SIM Max. There's still good chance I trade in the m5 for the SIM later tho

You're right on the Cobra spinning too much. Last year the F9 would not spin under 3000 for me no matter what we tried. The SpeedZone was slightly improved for me but by far the worst performing for me. SIM Max had spin constantly over 2500 and Mavrik held spin between 2300 - 2700. The SIM I sprayed all over the place. I dont know why but I could not find the center of the face

Mavrik SZ gave me top 5 ball speeds. Standard Mavrik is way more forgiving so ill have to see how it goes once I can get the subzero out on course

This is exactly why IMO it's so important to get fit and test yourself. I never would have thought I'd end up with a SIM. I was pretty sure I'd walk away w a Mav SZ.

I didnt take any screen shots or write down numbers but my swing speed is mid to high 90s. I should get a chance to get on trackman again Thursday and I'm going to play all day tomorrow and Wednesday so I'll post more thoughts and info after that.

Fairway Fred does whatever the hell he wants to. Fairway Fred and Chuck Norris we’re getting fit at the same time, they both liked the same set up in the SIM, there was only one left, and Chuck Norris deferred to Fairway Fred...

SIM performed VERY well in Dallas. I was very impressed with how it performs on toe misses especially. It's very long on center shots with very little drop-off of misses out on the toe. I hit alot of fairways with it, it was even pretty long on bad swings. I hit a couple blocks that held their line pretty well and stayed on the right edge of the fairway rather than finding the rough or native. Played 45 day 1 and only missed 2 fwys. Kept up with good friend I was playing with who is usually longer than me (though I'm swinging better than last time I played with him). Day 2 weather was terrible and only played 18. Only missed 1 fairway (first one) again felt like it was longer than I normally am on this course. I do need to dial in the settings/sliding weight and test on course against my gamer but I'm very impressed so far. Love the shape and the sound/feel.

Awesome!! I loved it in the simulator, but I need some different x-flex shafts to try with it and I want to see it fly outside. Shopping the max 5 wood too, same deal as the driver for me. Good luck!!
