Any opinions on the gen 1 PXG drivers?

Can get them for a steal right now with the for heroes program. Was wanting to pick up a new driver anyways. I am a relatively beginner golfer. But I have a high swing speed (115-120 range)

 

Any opinions on the Gen 1's? Any specific version you would recommend for someone like myself?

I had the Gen 1 driver and it was pretty much inferior to the other top OEM's in my opinion, especially in the feel dept. If I remember correctly I read somewhere that Parsons admitted that he wished he never put the Gen 1 drivers out as they just were not ready and up to par with the iron offerings.

 

Now the Gen 2's, that's a whole different story.

hmm interesting. May just end up going with something else then. The gen 2's are still fairly pricey. Was going to buy a year old driver like a cobra or rogue or something for around 250~

I've owned/played both the GEN 1 and GEN 2 PXG Drivers.....get the GEN 2....big improvement over the GEN 1!

And I now play Titleist TS4...430cc head, which I prefer.

Gen 1 w/ that swing speed and the right shaft will be a fairway finder. The Gen 1 lacks ball speed, but for me it was a fairway magnet. The Rogue is a better driver.

I switched from the standard Epic Flash to the PXG 0811x Gen 1. I’m longer and more consistent with the PXG. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews on the Gen 1 Drivers, it works for me that’s all I can say. If you have a fitting center near you get fit. If not, for the price it’s worth a shot either way.

Agree with the others about sub par feel and lack of ball speed. Compared with a TS3 and M3, the Gen 1 0811x was shorter at the same loft and with fairly similar shaft profiles. One thing that did surprise me was that it seemed to launch noticeably lower and felt like it was spinning much lower (unfortunately did not have a launch monitor to confirm). I could see this perhaps working for someone with a high swing speed and who needs help cutting spin, but in my opinion you can find a better driver head slightly used for similar money (i.e., M5 or M6, Epic Flash or Rogue SZ, Cobra F9, etc.).

This for me as well. The 0811x is about 15 to 20 yards shorter than my Rogue, but much more consistent.

Hero's pricing on Gen1 0811x is $115, you have to go back a few generations farther than M5/M6, Epic Flash, F9, etc. to match that price.

You’re probably right, I didn’t realize Hero’s price point is that low right now. If you find a shaft that fits, that’s a nice deal. From what I remember the 0811x I had came with a handcrafted Even Flow Black. You’d have to spend a bit more to get relatively newer stuff I guess, but used Rogue or F9 can probably be found < $200.

The 2016 m2 can be had cheap and it has a cult following. I have 3 friends that have them and won't ever replace them.

I found a "like new" Rogue SZ with an evenflow blue 65g in X stiff. Might end up with that idk

Haven't tried the driver but recently bought the Gen 1 fairway wood for $115. I love it. I've played a Rogue SZ driver recently and even with trying different shafts I couldn't get along with it and I've always been great with the driver. Found myself going back to an R9 Superdeep and Oban devotion shaft that is money! Just bought an M5 tour and I love it even more. Feels like a corked wooden baseball bat when you hit it. You should try one now that the SIM driver's are out. Can be had for a reasonable price now.

Yeah the Gen1 weren’t horrible I actually really liked the feel. Had both 0811 and the x nice thing until recently could get a HC Evenflow shaft worth lot more than head. Bought the Gen1 3 wood and hybrids love those and all have Evenflow shafts
