Any Love For Heel Shafted Putters

I’ve a 8802 style that I sometimes to practice with. But man, I’ve no confidence with that stick if I’m standing next to a 3 footer.

I frequently use a Protype iX #9HT. It's been the one club I haven't considering selling or trading. Great shape, insert, super high quality.

Have been using an Odyssey MXM 9 HT for the last three years. Got fit at an Austad's in Omaha probably 9 years ago and have been using that style ever since with the occasional one or two round experiment with something different.

Last season used a Stroke Lab Tuttle for a few rounds but at the end of the day, heel shafted fits my stroke best.

I still roll a few. I probably make more with a conventional Anser style head - I never use mallets - but the old 8802 style will improve your stroke unless you are a face balanced SBST guy. :-)

I love the #9 style. Had a Del Mar, Golo3, several variations of the Odyssey #9....but my gamer is the Odyssey Metal X Milled Versa #9Ht....just Love it. This design work great for me.

 

I do also have a few Machine M10 putters that I putt very well with, but the Flowneck just fit me a tad better.

It gets harder and harder to find a heel-shafted putter that isn't offset.

If offset and toe hang is OK, though, you can probably find a heel-shafted putter that you'll like.

The important thing to remember is that the next person to design a consistently effective putter will be the very first to do it ever.

I have a love/hate, Jekkyl and Hyde type of relationship with heal shafted mallet putters like the SC Del Mar and Odyssey 9. When my timing is on I've rolled them as well, if not better than anything else, but without warning it can go sideways on me in an instant. Like I go from draining 10-15 footers to missing the hole entirely on a 2 foot putt. So maddening.

Yes I have come to use them exclusively. Old gooseneck 1950's style. Puts my eyes in a good place over the ball and lets me get feedback. I make a lot of putts with it and I don't see a reason to take it out.

I struggle to putt with everything but love the look of a heel shafted putter and have a few, including a Bullseye, heel shaft offset I’ve had since the late 70’s.

I pretty much only use heel-shafted putters now, though I occasionally drag out a TPA IX for a change.

I've got a Taylormade TPA XVIII, then the rest are all basically 8802-style putters, though my Muirfields are, I think, more inspired by the Bristol Wizard 600.

I pull putts with plumber's necks, and I don't like mallets because I thump the short and medium putts too much.

I've just bought a Yonex Tour Putter (8802 style), and I'm really taken with it so far. It's a little heavier than most of my other putters.

I'd still like to pick up an Odyssey #9 of some sort. I had one I liked, but sold it when I bought the TPA XVIII.

I pulled putts for years before I figured out a heel shafted putter solved all my issues. And I will be trying out one of those old Yonex putters this spring.

Love the look of the Odyssey #9 -- even went out and bought the O-Works when it was just on the market. Maybe it was the insert, but coming from a milled Scotty Newport - I could not get myself to commit to the putter. It bounced in and out of the bag until I sold it. I'd be open to give a milled #9 a fair shot again though. Still love the shape.

I did a SAM putter fitting this week. I always thought I putted on an arch, boy was I wrong. Turns out heel shafted putters fit my stroke (straight back slight arch through) better than the pile of Answer/Newport style putters I have been using on and off. I picked up a Miura 007.

I only use 8802 styles. Plus some Anser styles.

Use a Cleveland Huntington Beach 2 now after playing their 6 and 3 models for a while. Feel way more confident standing over putts now.

8802 been in my bag since '74. I also have a Raw Cleveland Designed by Ben Crenshaw. I bought the head had an old shaft installed and a blackout Ping grip. It's pretty nice feeling.

I love heel shafted putters...was a big 8802 style guy before I started using a plumbers neck Cameron. I did use a Golo 3 for a few months, and I liked it...but what I hate about most heel-shafted putters is the look of the face. I hate how the heel side of the face is square. I know you don't see it when you putt, but I just hate that look. If someone makes heel shafted putter with that smoothed out a little bit, I'd give it a look.
