I can still manage s-300/400, but not for long practice sessions. Like you, I feel it afterwards, so I know I've got to be careful while I practice. For a round, I'm OK, but I've got to keep working to strengthen my lower back and core muscles.

I've actually just replaced my MP-4s which had Modus 125X shafts with a set of MP4s shafted with graphite. Now, these graphite shafts are pretty heavy themselves (119g), but the deadweight of the clubs was 10g lighter than the MP4s shafted with the Modus 125X.

So far, I like the change. I found going to a much lighter shaft, like a 105g shaft, too much of a change, so these graphite ones are a good balance between lightweight and sturdy.

Those are in great condition! Welcome to the club! Interested to hear a comparison between these and the MP4's... I'm actually hunting for a set of MP4's at the moment, I have this thread to blame

I've been wanting a set of the Protos for a few years, albeit not actively hunting a set out because I've got enough irons as it is. When I saw these in the local shop, I couldn't pass them up, not in the condition they were in and the price they were offered at. With a bit of bargaining and a couple of trade-ins (my old MD2 wedges), I ended up paying just 1,000 yen in cash for them; that's about $10US.

That's the deal of the century right there! Definitely can't pass that up. I've really enjoyed mine and I doubt I'll ever get rid of them, they are just really solid.

That's an incredible price for those Protos. Reminiscent of the Chanelbacks, somewhat.

I'm having a similar problem with a set of Wilson Staff Fluid Feels (89-90 model) right now. Actually with two sets, the others being 78 Tour Blades. Both are quite reasonably priced, though not 1,000 yen reasonable, LOL. What makes it worse, I already have a set of 78 Tour Blades, though they're a bit of a mixed set, with a regular flex 7 iron, and the short irons have some irregularities in length that I haven't sorted out.

On top of that.... I recently listed my irons, all the sets I own, on the spy forum. I have 19 sets, though at least 3 are clubhead only. I really don't need another set of Wilson Staffs that I would have to rotate thru the bag, find grips for, and have adjusted to spec. Right? I think I'm in the wrong place to expect help not buying them, LOL.

Unrelated... in moving my iron sets into the house, I've had occasion to look at them more closely. My TW282 Rams are front and center at the moment, and I've had occasion to look at them. I noticed the PW looks to have about the same offset as I see in my 986 Tour 8 iron, which is to say it looks almost onset. A naked eye examination of the sole shows a fair bit of bounce, as well. Golden Rams are not known for a lot of bounce, even in the PW. I think what it's showing is that I've had them set weaker than their specs. I had them set to a 51* PW, 4* from there to a 19* 2 iron. The TW282 are part of the Frequency Matched model of Golden Rams, the std specs a friend found for me for FM Goldens back in 2001 listed a 49* PW, with some 3.5* gaps in the long irons to get to a 19.5* 2 iron. It would seem from the bounce and lack of offset to show these TW282 were that, or possibly even a bit stronger. Interesting.

Long paragraph, there.

Yep they appear to be in excellent shape--- The 6 iron puzzles me though. Around here if I see a shaft rusted on the outside I will pull the grip and check it with a bore light on the inside. This environment is so corrosive around here.

That amount of rust showing on the outside certainly suggests a lot more rusting on the inside. I wonder if the previous owner left it out overnight sometime and it rained, or left it on the course overnight before it was found. Mind you, I bought a set of Mizuno MP18s new with PX 6.0 shafts, and the PW was showing clear signs of rusting within a year. I treated it the same way as all my other clubs, so I've no idea why that shaft rusted so quickly, but it did.

Fortunately, if the 6i shaft is in a bad way, a DG S400 shaft shouldn't be too difficult to replace.

19 sets...you and I are in about the same place, then. I have realised, long after my wife did, that I probably do have a few too many golf clubs. I've got several sets lined up on the chopping block, and want to get down to 12~15 sets this year. Most of those will be classic sets. In fact, let's see what I've got:

TO GO:

Maxfli Aussie Blades TM-92 (DGS300): hard one to part with, but they're heavier and I don't need that now with my back)

Baldo MB11 (Modus 120S): I got these to flip. beautiful looking irons, but that's not why I got them

Black-ox Maruman Conductor SG (?) (Heavy Vanadium shafts): Apart from the shafts being hard work, these have way to much offset for me

Golfsmith Joe Kirkwood Personal Model (aluminium shafts): I really don't like the feel of the aluminium shaft. Plus, no PW with this set is a bit of an inconvenience

Bridgestone J36CBs (NSPRO 1050S): Got these last September for cheap, thinking that the lighter shaft would be good for my back. It's too light though. Lovely looking CBs, but I'm not going to play them

Mac VIP Tour CBs (S-300): A CB that offers no forgiveness! Not a bad club, but not one of my favourites either. I can live without them.

PROBABLY GOING:

1973 Wilson X-31 (X-stiff): too much shaft for me now, I think.

Mizuno MS-1 (S200): I like these, but I've got other Mizuno irons I like more. Like the VIP Tours CBs, I can live without them

Ram Camber Soles (PXi 6.0 @ +0.25"): These shafts were pulls that I had extended about an inch. They play a bit funky. I'll probably discard the shafts and keep the heads for later.

NOT SURE ABOUT:

Mac MT Tour Forged (DGX100): beaten up set that I got reshafted with DGX100 at 0.5". Probably too much shaft for me now, but I really fell in love with these quirky irons

Mac MT R58 (Brunswick Precision 6.5): Apart from the abomination of a SW, these are beautiful irons (Miura forged). But the shaft is a bit much, and they're also short for me. Maybe a reshaft candidate.

Mizuno Augusta model, year unknown (TT Rocket shaft? Jet shaft?): These are another reshafting candidate. But I might just let them go. Dunno...

Mac VIP (80's reissue) (PX 6.0 @ 0.5"): Like the extra length in the shaft, and the irons feel great, but the short irons just have too much offset for my liking.

STAYING:

(Modern)

Mizuno MP4 (Attas 115X @ +0.5"): These feel just right for where my swing is now. I love the extra length

Wilson FG-62s (DG300): Love these. I think these are a US import or US spec, so slightly longer than standard length Japanese irons.

Nike OG blades (DGS400?): If they're not already, these are modern classics. Look great, feel great.

Callaway Protos (DGS400): Got to try them on the course, but I pretty much know what to expect. The feel is sublime.

(Classics/vintage)

Mizuno ANGC model (1987?) (DG S400 @ +0.5"): Got these reshafted before my back injury. I can play them, but can't practice with them for too long. Lovely looking irons.

Mizuno MP14 (DG S300): 2i-PW. Yeah, I'm keeping these.

Mizuno MS-11 (Brunswick Precision 5.5 @ +0.25): The shafts are starting to show signs of rust. I'll play them until they've had it, and may be keep the heads around.

Mac Muirfield (S-300): 1i-SW in great condition. I need to put these never-hit clubs in play.

Mac SS1 Tourney Custom (S-400): 1i-SW. Bit short for me, but these are unhit collector's clubs that I intend to get dirty.

Mac JN Muirfield 20th (S-300): Favourite Mac iron set. These aren't going anywhere.

RAM Tour Grinds (Dynamic S): Classics. Not going anywhere

Wilson FG-JA (Regular): These are identical to the FG-17s. Great irons. Not sure if I prefer these to the Mac Muirfield 20ths. The SW with this set is excellent.

Ben Hogan 1972 Apex (Apex 4): Bit on the short side, but I like the these. The Apex 4 shaft is smooth. May extend them one day.

Honma PP737 (DGS200): A cast blade. Not the best feeling iron, but these were a popular set back in the day and I can see why. They also go to an 11i and I like Spinal Tap.

There you have it. Now, I was able to remember all those off the top of my head, so that's something.

also the dg pro s300 is a very nice shaft with just enough help. I have a set of VR pro combos with that shaft.

So I'm pleased with myself for several reasons. Just wrapped an over budget, over due rehab of my '96 GMC Z71. Every component save for ABS module was replaced on brake system. New rubber, shocks and sway bars has her rolling sweet but that ordeal (getting air out of an ABS system w/o proper tools is a nightmare, just saying) kept iron projects on back burner.

The big issue also holding back the iron builds was , how do I deal with excessive play of hosel bore that some of these heads have? Well answer I came up with is mesh tape that comes in precise thicknesses. Found a vendor who sells the stuff, from .001" to .005" (in increments of .001" or .0015") widths. Downside is cost. Like $30 a role, so to buy two different sizes to cover things, I'm dropping $75 (or 3 @ $100) to satiate my persnickety standards of holding shaft play to minimum and keeping things concentric. But issue is resolved and will get started on 3 builds in February.

Lastly, spent much of this year, being a hero with clubs shorter than #7i and a zero with clubs over that. Quite frustrating and jumped into a lot of rabbit holes to address the situation. But recently , I came across an AMG clip (actually 3rd time I've seen it) about how to optimize club head speed. The Cliff Notes is, get hand speed peeking sooner in downswing, so I'm like wtf, I'll really try it. Well, long irons started popping again and so did big dog. Have not seen this pop in eons and the funny irony it's something I used to do routinely, albeit with a cruddier swing. But this is a gem of a swing tip, Reaching peak hand speed sooner in downswing or "throw that sucker from the top" clears up a lot of gobbly gook mess that constipates an otherwise working swing. Like I said, pleased with myself, like I ate oatmeal and salad for 3 days. Cheers.

Nard I need some help with my short irons... Can't be missing greens with a PW or even an 8iron... I think it's as simple as keeping my hands quieter for these clubs

"I think it's as simple as keeping my hands quieter for these clubs"-J

Apologies for long rambling here:

It is that but a crucial key is elevating the role of shoulder turn throughout. When you watch a Speith or Tiger performing little shots, chip or short pitches, you'll notice their right shoulder leads the charge and finishes at the target. Important not to stall shoulder rotation and get armsy with it. This concept got cemented with me on the putting green trying to emulate the crazy spin control those guys have. From there I expanded feel to shots from 30-80 yards and finally to full passes. Delegating power to shoulder and just using hands to control disposition of face was better done in this baby step fashion.

Also, what gets little attention anywhere is not that the idea that solid swingers hit down on the ball but that they utilize body inclination to accomplish it a lot more than average swingers do. This is a complex thing to wrap head around and even more vexing to implement. Trying to maintain an arm/hand path that is ultimately always at or under plane yet is decidedly downward in inclination with shorter clubs and maybe even upward on Driver requires examining geometry and angle tilts of hips, shoulders & spine of how movements are choreographed to get that desired "smother the ball" impact. Yeah, Pro's have great hands but they have the proper body movements and geometry to put it to good use. So upshot is look into that aspect too. Examine what your hip tilt is like, examine shoulder rotation. Is lead hip lower than trail? Do shoulder rotation hold perpendicular to spine angle? Does trail of both follow lead of both? Do these dispositions hold up? Or do they get lost or go off at the wrong time? Is there true rotation or are things a bit too lateral? I failed at all those. Canary here is do you do better with a certain length club over others? Great with Driver, crappy with wedges, that sort of thing. Too often as mortals, we resolve issues of swing from a hands back mentality when a spine center out might be a better path for the answer.

Ironically, all this is some way led to me having bigger, problematic issues with long clubs. I did get massive improvement in shorter clubs, more yards, with more control & tighter dispersion. But, I lagged even digressed with distance gaps from #6i on. Driver was just weak and awkward feeling. Cause in large part was because I was obsessing on geometry and choreography and just lost sight a key firing, I once intuitively had. Guess I needed to be more "hands back mentality" there, so go figure. So keeping mentality, nimble nuanced and agile, balancing that with a patient purposeful approach is something I continually struggle with. But enough about me .

So to get back on point here, it is about more shoulder/body rotation over use of hands/arms but it's also gleening that the body is doing the right thing in the right disposition. Without addressing that your hands and arms will "rescue" swing and you'll be back at square one.

Guys I need your help.

I want another set of blades.

Currently only having Mizuno MP32 with $-taper stiff 120 +0,5 length. So perfect specs. They are lovely.

So what do I go to next. I have only played the Nike VR Pros & the Miura baby blades and I regretted I sold them, but the specs wasn’t right. So I kinda wanna find another set of VR Pros, but they’re hard to find on the bay, and I don’t live in the USA. (crazy taxes to buy from you)

So I thought I would ask the best people on the internet.

Fire your suggestions away thanks. Which set do I get and why?

I don’t wanna game the 2020 models as I don’t have that kind of cash as of yet for new clubs.

I'd probably look at MP-4s, and have the lofts tweaked a bit. If you want to go older yet, the MS-11s/MP-11s are a rather excellent choice.

If you aren't set on Mizuno/Nike, the 2014 Taylormade Tour Preferred MB are worth a look. And, any number of Wilson Staff models, from the FG-17 thru the FG-51. Not being in the US, you may have other Wilson sets available that have largely been unseen on these shores.

Couple thoughts off top of my head.

Yeah, MP-4s would be my first choice, too. Should be fairly easy to find a set second hand. MP-68s and 69s are good. Basically, if you're concerned about specs, I'd look less for a particular iron and more for one that is closer to the shaft you desire.

As NRJyzr mentioned, Wilson are another good one to look at, including older models. The FG-17s came out around 1980, but they are very playable. I have a set made for the Japanese market (FG-J8, but identical to the FG-17s) and they are the easiest blades I have to play. Like me, you prefer longer shafts; for whatever reason, both sets of Wilsons I have seem to have longer shaft lengths than my Mizunos, but as far as I know they are standard length shafts. I prefer Mizunos to be +1/4~1/2 over their standard length shafts, but the Wilsons are fine as they are for me.

Bridgestone J15 MB, highly regarded and could have been picked up on closeout for cheap last 2 years.

'99 Hogan Apex still stands up well to anything in last 20 years. Decent conditioned sets are not outrageously valued.

TM RAC MB TP as forgiving as most all "Player's GI" yet true forged feel and solid performing.

FG 59 if you can find a set, pretty enjoyable clubs to own.

That's a lot to unpack, Nards. I get what you are saying with the wedges. In order to have consistent accuracy. you have to be 'connected.' The problem comes with how to initiate it. That's where patience and rhythm come in. Patience not to just step up to the ball and take a hack. I've had to use the wedges a lot lately, as they replace the putter on my Toptracer Virtual golf rounds. I've found I need to initiate the swing with the shoulders, and it's good to waggle a few times concentrating on making the shoulders start things. After that I can pretty much not worry about anything. With wedges I go by a number for distance. Once I get in a rhythm 9 is about 75 yards with my 56, up to 105 yards at 11.

The downswing is dependent on making a largely tension free back swing. Of course there should be tension as the shoulders resist the lower body, but there's no need to force anything. And this is where it generally goes wrong for me... the bloody down swing. I've been working a lot on getting the club on or below the plane, but sometimes it gets stuck and bad things happen, as we all know. My old action, the action I've had forever playing soggy, wet fairways comes in steep. I never had a problem taking a lot of real estate after contact, but in Japan I've had to change. The swing is still not there yet.

When it's on, I have little understanding of why - I just try to stay aggressive and think of little else. That little else includes: starting the transition down by rotating my right knee in, because I have a tendency to hang back and it will also ease the pressure on my back. At the same time, I've tired to focus on feeling my left heel press into the ground (if that makes sense). I also need to maintain width in my midsection, allowing space for everything to clear. If I've done all that contact should be clean and I just have to continue rotating to a balanced finish. This all depends on my back not spasming, as it has done twice in the last little bit.

Some good choices there. The J15s are so clean-looking, and the FG59s are just gorgeous to look at. Aren't they about as compact as the Baby Blades?

Yeah, pretty much the same foot print as BB's from comparisons pictures others have done. Had the Ping Blueprints in hand with my FG's both are in same class of compact too which is smaller (wee bit), in size to RAM Tour Grinds of yore also. The clubs are lookers and are tasty to hit. I'm not crazy about stock shaft but that's correctable.

I hear you and we are essentially saying same thing. Like the "left heel press" feel too.

My take has been that shoulder rotation assumes more dominance and control, that hands have delegated back (the amplitude & rhythm) of pass and hands are left to nuance face control and final "flick". Making those adjustments comfortable took me about 3-4 months of practicing to it. The added dividend was that it led to a revamp of putting stroke too which is now much more shoulder dominant. Little shots are big shots done in miniature. Top Pro's demonstrate that every week on the tour.

Rant warning :

The tidbit of "chip like you putt" has to be one of worst pieces of swing advice ever given out to the masses.

I think chip like you putt is a bit simplistic, but there is definitely a lot of shared technique between the two - both driven from the shoulders and requiring acceleration, or at least constant speed to prove effective.

One of the most valuable pieces of advice my old man ever gave me in golf was that to judge how hard to hit a chip, just think how hard you would hit a putt of the same distance. Works very well for bump and runs in my experience, less well for flop shots.
