Does anyone know if the retail version of the P7TW blades are forged from the same metal as TW’s?

I am sure many people, myself included, are curious to know if the irons Woods plays are made from the same metal as the ones available for sale. Although Taylormade is claiming the blades are exactly what tiger uses, there is a chance the metals differ. I could not confirm from any other source...so all knowledge is much appreciated. Thanks.

Clearly they are not the same clubs as Tiger uses; the lofts are quite different for one thing. Different metal? Maybe, but I don't know why they would be. The metal isn't particularly important anyway within the realm of common forging steels for golf heads.

You can order them with Tiger's specs. To OP, I'm sure Tiger's irons are likely special in construction compared to the retail. I guarantee you if there was a set sitting in the below spec in a shop he would not play them in a tourney. Have to believe special attention are going into his whether it be actual metal, grinding, weighting, offset pressing, or something else.

Everyone knows Tiger has a personal forging press in a secret room within the Miura factory. Only his irons come out of that room.

I dunno, whatever went into the process of refining the P7TW to exactly what he plays now should be pretty straightforward to duplicate. I mean it would have to be given that he will obviously need plenty of backup sets. I see no reason that anything related to grinding, offset, weighting, or metallurgy couldn't be duplicated with their CNC milled grinding and modern construction methods.

I believe it was discussed in the P7TW thread that Tigers “proto” P7TW’s were made out of 1018 and the retail versions are 1025 carbon steel.

His heads were each milled one by one out of a block, can’t remember the metal they used on his but it wasn’t 1025 that the retail ones are. Rorys proto irons were made the same way. If you look at pics of his irons, everything including the lettering looks more precise and clean because of the milling process.

TaylorMade on this forum mentioned when he replaces his set they would be retail heads, 1025 forged, however this is Tiger and I bet he is going to get the exact same thing he had before.

this is funny and all but the OP has a legit question. Tigers irons aren’t the same metal and weren’t made the same way as retail, atleast the ones he played last year and won masters etc with.

A hog out like you describe is great to create a working prototype but it won't provide the same feel as a forging. I can fully believe that TM worked with him to make a series of hog out proto's until he was happy with the shape, flight and turf interaction, but at that point the samples would typically be used to create the forging dies for actual club head manufacture.

Regarding his heads made being made from 1018 (other than proto's), that seems unlikely. It's too soft and not consistent with what he's (supposedly) used previously.

I think it might of been 1033, you will find all the info in the p7tw iron thread where TaylorMade golf was posting and gave us this info. I will look it up later when I’m not on my phone, searches are terrible using phone on this site now

and no he was not using forged 1025 heads. They were milled from 1033 I believe, will look up the metal later

yep, that's it. His heads were each milled 1018C last year, at least for the masters and beginning of year. Like the rep said, he would switch to the 1025 forged ones after he wore that set out or wanted a new set. However, we have no proof he actually did that. If I won the masters with milled 1018C heads, I would prob want the same thing and he could easily ask for the exact same thing.

Pretty sure that Jonathan Wall did an article recently where he described the process and how TM thought it would be easy to just copy his old irons but they learned that even though they could get the club correct, Tiger still noticed the feel was off due to lack of tungsten originally and the different material used to construct the head compared to what he used at Nike. So for all the super smart people in here talking about unobtainum, and secret presses in the back of the Miura facility, you're 100% correct Tiger's Irons aren't made from the same stuff the retail ones are.
