Wilson Staff Blades - First Impressions

Always love me some Wilson Staff blades. I still play the FG59’s from time to time but would game these in a heart beat

Tell your shop that they should have W/S! Sometimes all it takes. My local shop only has a few shafts on the W/S cart to test so as I said it was X100 for me and nothing else in X. Not the best for this bracket of golfer as many will not be buying s300 off the rack. They can compete with any blade out there.

The below video has them with the highest ball speed and longest carry in the category.

Those clubs are sweet. I know your another Srixon honk (although I think you got me on SS), what are you doing with your old Srixons?

Srixons are absolutely fantastic irons. My dad is now playing them. We reshafted with some Modus 120S soft stepped and he's loving them. It says a lot that these feel as good as Mizuno/Srixon. Wilson has done an awesome job with this set. Big shoes to fill!

Now they just need to come out with the V6 replacement , so I can do a combo set :)!

Beautiful irons. Saw these yesterday at the local shop and was very impressed. Wilson goes under the radar for a bunch of their stuff.

So far I really like them. Ian from TXG calls the C Taper the dispersion killer and he's spot on there. They're still very workable if you set up for the cut or draw but when just picking targets and hitting straight shots (for me that's a 5 yard draw or so) I feel like it's much easier to do. Very rare to find a cart with the S+ in it so I tested the S and X back to back. I much preferred the S. My ball speed was higher, spin was lower (I'm assuming this is because the shaft had more flex at impact), and my contact was better. I generally over draw shots with a stiff but I could easily play the 120S in the C Taper. I just wanted a bit more weight. I even thought about soft stepping these which probably would have worked well. I need to get some solid testing in off of grass next week in Florida but initial impressions are fantastic.

Had a lesson today. Clubs felt exceptional. Ball speeds were VERY solid. These are at standard loft and this is a 7 iron. Keep in mind carry is a bit high due to not having dots on the ball (spin reading a bit low on flightscope). The ball speed is what to focus on. Very solid!

For a standard loft blade 7 iron, that is some impressive ball speed. How would you say they compare to the Srixon 900 series or Z Forged in overall footprint and ease of hitting?

Here is an address pic of the 785 4 iron (which is very close to the Z Forged footprint/top line) next to the Wilson. I had planned on switching the 785 on to the shaft to get a bit more forgiveness but thus far the speeds I’m getting off of these are very impressive. They just feel hot even when I’m not going at it. A calm cutty swing with the 7 still yields 120+ BS.

Playability seems on par with the Z forged.

Tested these vs V6 at Golftown the other day. I blade outperformed the v6 in every way.... only demoing 7 irons but still. Not sure I would have the confidence with the long irons though.. anyone have a combo set of staff blades and v6?

Difference in s vs s+ is mainly the weight? Or is it noticeably stiffer?

It's not nearly as stout feeling as the 130x but it's on par with X100 or PX 6.5. The S would be playable up to mid 90s swing speed with a 7 depending on your shot shape. I love it but if you play it too stiff (which the 130x is for me) it isn't a pleasant experience. The 125 S+ feels perfect.

Lefty clubs can look strange to my weird right handed brain but those lines look great to me even backwards!

I know! I do quite a few things right handed but looking down at a right handed club looks really strange. ?

Nice! Good to hear that. Just noticed they are the black kbs shafts. Those are sick! How do you like the black vs satin finish so far? And more importantly does the finish seem durable?

I have played the Staff Model blades a few times indoors on a simulator. They are great. I am so torn as to whether or not I should keep them in the bag or stick with my T100.

 

Has anyone hit them side by side as well? What were your thoughts? I need to see if some of your experiences are the same as mine..

Played those for 20 years and loved em. You knew immediate when you missed the sweet spot.

Been able to try these a few times side by side. The Wilson Staff Model irons seem to have a stronger flight compared to the T100. However I've been able to try a full set of T100 irons (4-P) and my favourite part of these irons are the playability of the long irons. I can imagine the Staff Model blades would be very solid through out too. I do have a Staff Model Utility on the way in a 21 degree head and have high hopes for it.
