First time golf trip planner in Scottsdale area - what a cluster.

I'm late to this party. I planned an annual golf trip to the PHX area for more than a dozen years. My two cents matches the consensus that your two 36 hole days should be We-Ko-Pa and Troon North. For your 18 hole day, there are so many to choose from and I'd say that any one of the following should make you and your group happy: Link to PHX golf course photo tours: https://www.flickr.com/photos/golfcoursepix/collections/72157631875831171/

Southern Dunes - Closest you will get to the NC Sandhills in the Southwest. Great startegic course. A good drive South from Scottsdale

Wickenburg Ranch - Great bang for the buck. nice piece of land. A good drive north from Scottsdale

Grayhawk (either Raptor or Talon) - Some good eye candy and some good holes. I prefer Southern Dunes and Wickenburg, but Grayhawk is closer

Boulders South - Same comments as Grayhawk

Talking Stick North - Not much to look at but great strategic course with excellent bunkering and greens

Verde River - Haven't been back since the third name change, but always liked this course. Some interesting holes and excellent greens. Don't know if the housing development has had an adverse impact.

Camelback Ambiente - Ambiente flies under the radar and is under rated IMO

Lotta good options. I personally think Grayhawk is terrible. Every par four looks the same. Lots of semi blind shots off the TEe and when you get up to where you hit your ball you find it in a bush.

Troon is pretty good as far as getting the desert golf experience but there’s just a lot of holes on both courses that I think are really terrible.

if I were doing exactly what you’re doing and I’ve done it 20 times, I think you have to play TPC because it’s a PGA tour course and every time you watch that tournament on TV in the future you’ll be reminded of the experience. Also if you play at any point from January to March the stands will be up and it’s quite a cool experience. then I would play both boulders courses in one day. And both Wekopa courses another day. The desert vistas at Wekopa are spectacular. They are nonexistent at Grayhawk. The setting, vistas, and conditions, are pretty good at Troon as well.

The boulders is something that’ll stick in your mind for years!

so TPC, boulders or Troon, and Wekopa .

I quite liked Grayhawk (Raptor only) but then again it was the first course we played after arriving in Scottsdale. In retrospect I think it may have been a little bland compared to the others but still a darn good golf course compared to many others you might play. In great condition and a solid test of your game.

i used to play there quite a bit. My buddy was a member so we often got out afternoon for $40 which was spectacular. It s in nice condition. I just find a lot of the holes look the same. Again, nothing really wrong with it as a golf course but if the OP wants to experience desert golf at its finest, I wouldn’t put that one on the list. And I agree with a lot of the posters that TPC is not a spectacular course, it’s always cool to play a tour course especially when the stands are up.

We had fun at TPC champions...nice course, great staff. It might be too far from Scottsdale but Eagle Mountain is a nice course with lots of changes in elevation and most fairways are bowl shaped so you can swing as hard as you want and the ball stays in play. Golf Club of Estrella had some interesting finishing holes
