“Hitting bombs” is just a Mavrik marketing strategy. Phil used that phrase in his last commercial. Tiger started winning these last two years when he backed off the driver and hit fairways. If Phil was smart, he would do the same. Why he’s swinging past parallel is beyond me. His increased clubhead speed is only contributing to a more offline drive. He’d be better off losing some speed.

I'm a big Phil fan myself but he needs to go the Tiger route and go to a small ball mentality. His current "hitting bombs" mentality is doing nothing for his game. He is swinging so hard he lost his balance on a couple of his drives in the Farmers Insurance tournament and as a result missed the cut. Just my .02

If that’s Phil’s attitude, cross the Career Grand Slam off his list. But I would love to see Phil win it at Winged Foot this year. He’s playing it no matter what. No doubt the USGA will give him an exemption if he hasn’t qualified.

It seems like he knows his time is or could be up. I do agree with the comments about just trying to have it all click for a week and win vs booking consistently Top 30s (or whatever).

I think he was motivated for the 2018 Ryder Cup (at least making the team) and probably last year's US Open. Given the decline in his iron game and putting, my guess is he's just not putting in the time other than what makes his CHS go up.

Phil is my favorite and it's amazing how long he stayed competitive. But he may be off the map after this year's or next year's US Open (will he get two invites to play at the site of his collapse and his hometown course).

If the US Open was next week, apart from qualifying or getting an exemption from the USGA, Phil would not be playing in it

Phil can and does hit bombs. He would beat any contributor on this forum any day of the week, hungover, on life support. I worry that the field is just too young, long, and careful for him to compete anymore. I like the dude a lot and love everything he stands for but he is fighting just not To get cut anymore.

Have you actually looked at his results since he won in Mexico in 2018 and Pebble in 2019 ? I doubt it. Phil had a hot start to 2019 then his play cratered again like it did in 2018 after he won in Mexico. His current poor form has nothing to do with his "calves" or hitting bombs. Phil seems to be more interested in his social media persona than being an actual top flight touring pro at this point.

"Old" Phil has become the ultimate Phil. Hasn't seen a fairway he wont miss, or a drive he wont rip. He was playing a huge cut ( dare a say slice ) at times this weekend.

There's nothing wrong with losing it at 49. I can't recall many full time tour pros playing through their age 50 season. I do think his strategy is backwards; rather than doing whatever he can to keep his speed up I think allowing the swing to slow down as it should at his age would get him in play more and he'd be playing better. It takes him out of any of the longer events but he's not accurate enough to compete at those anyway. As far as the grand slam he has zero shot regardless; US Opens are a grind for younger men; it has the lowest percentage of older winners of all the majors. Pebble would have been his only shot since it's not a traditional US Open length course.

Phil will do something beyond funny shirts, awkward dance moves and increased self-promotion.

Phil will actually focus on his strengths (which are many) and forget about keeping up with the bombers.

 

 

But, alas, by Easter, the high hopes turn quickly accelerate to certain disappointment leaving his fans to defend a career that once was..........................and shall never be again.
