Early DL3 review

While understanding that this is his first tournament as a walking reporter,he needs to dial the enthusiasm up a bit. He brings so much knowledge and experience to the role but listening to him yesterday was tough.

Never showed much personality as a player so not surprising to see the carryover to commentating. Hope he loosens up as time goes by.

Watching the replay it took me a bit to realize when he was even talking. Aaron came through - was expecting him to sell me a wedge!

I'm sure it will take time for him to get into the role and all that, but yesterday he was kind of the Perry Como of on course guys. I keep thinking he'll eventually inject his own personality into, but then thinking that may not be much different, lol. Rossie, Dottie, Roger all set the bar pretty high for that role, IMO. Got to be able to convey some of the drama.

He should take a look at how Bones has gone from being very dry to how he now shares stories about Phil which makes him a great listen.

Of course, I'm still thinking we should have you and DSS as on course reporters and Fergie in a booth.

I thought he did ok. Read the lies in the rough well, and did a good job predicting the kind of shots the guys needed to play.

I like how the new broadcast has more silence. Sometimes it's better to just let us watch.

DL3 Swinging is better than DL3 talking on TV behind the scenes.

All the pro athlete announcers, regardless of sport, say it's hard to adapt to TV when they first start. DL will improve as his comfort level with the broadcast team grows.

He only speaks when he has something to say. He’s soft spoken, yet calculated. Perfect for golf. While Faldo never shuts up, when gone to, DLIII answers questions and that’s it. He even said that Tiger plays “boring golf”! Yes he did, and yes Tiger does...because he’s so good.

 

Gripe... when Sir Nick asked him what the secret to TP is, he didn’t say anything we all don’t already know - hit fairways. Lame. The guy won and got into a playoff...have some insight, Davis! You should be a seasoned scholar on the topic and be able to deliver a thesis statement about the secrets of playing Torrey. We can’t!

Not all announcers should laud the players on every shot. Hopefully he calls them out when they make bad decisions or choke on a shot.

Pat Summerall was one of the best announcers ever and he almost never got too excited.

His role should be "just the facts". He just needs to be insightful. "Less is more" would be a good game plan for all announcers.

I wish I had the time to cross reference the threads praising Euro Tour coverage for balance and silence to those wanking that Davis isn’t Dick Vitale. I bet it would be illuminating...

 

For the record, I’m in the less is more, EF Hutton camp and am encouraged by the change.

DL swing better than DL talking on TV better than DL commercials. Fred Funk and Couples were way better in those Mitsubishi comfort zone commercials and that aint saying much.

Ironically, DL3 was on Sirius XM today talking about the event, his first broadcast, the reaction to the sad news of Kobe Bryant yesterday, etc.

He was very candid and said give him 20 minutes at dinner and his personality comes out. Tell him to turn on his mic and immediately say something relevant and that's just not him, right now. Honest self reflection and hopefully this week will be a bit better and so on and so on.
