2020 Golf spending bet with my GF

SUPERG

Recommended Posts

Sup fellas,

Today I seek a little help. I have a bet with my GF that I wont purchase any golf clubs at all starting Feb1 and she can't get shoes/bags you name it with $1000 cash on the line. We each get exceptions, Like I get balls, tees, gloves, that are needed. Anyway my question is for those that don't change gear a lot, and what do you think about since you don'y buy crap all the time. I feel like I'm always looking to change and I know it's going to be tough to not buy a damn thing ALL YEAR. I love my bag setup now so that helps since I feel a change to this would be unwelcome. Should I just cram a ton of practice in? Play more quick 9's? It seems like a dumb question but on WRX we're all freaks compared to the people who upgrade once a decade lol .

Instead of going down (or staying in) the equipment rabbit hole, go down the instruction rabbit hole. Watch endless and contradictory instructional videos on youtube, comment and critique in the instruction sections here, post your own videos for others to critique and comment on. Or get deep into golf course architecture, read, travel (to spend the money you're NOT spending on clubs), etc. There are tons of ways to spend time and money on golf without actually buying clubs.

Oh, and in the end you want to make sure you lose the bet. Even if you just pick up a used wedge for $5 from a bargain bin someplace, make sure you lose. Just a bit of advice from a guy who's still (mostly) happily married after 35 years.

Whenever you feel the need to change, go back and read the awesome reviews (there will always be some) on the equipment you already have.

Can you buy grips? Regrip your clubs they will seem new again (or scrub them with some degreaser or bleche white)

Keep your clubs clean, try different paintfills.

Get a swingweight scale and tinker with some lead tape.

Pay for lessons.

All kinds of fun golf-related stuff to do without spending much (teachers life lol!)

I change my own grips at least every 6 months, I online window shop, I tinker with swing weights, I change my own shafts....all to avoid buying new gear I don't need.

I play Callaway X-22 irons, I have almost pulled the trigger on Callaway Rogue irons at least 7 times in the last year.

I played the best round of my life on my last round in the Fall and now my Accountant wife says to me every time I think about buying new irons...Do you really need new irons? Didn't you shoot the best round of your life with those irons in the Fall?

Happy Wife...Happy Life!

Around Oct/Nov figure out some shoes/bags she wants but is refraining from buying. Buy that/those for her, have them wrapped, and hide them. Then around mid December, buy something you want and have it shipped to your house close to Xmas, so she sees you "lose" the bet. When she calls you out for the G, say merry xmas and hand her the hidden gifts. Win-win. I'm hoping she will forget about the extra G after this.

Oh my goodness, somebody is selling mint Mizuno mp20's with c taper 130x shafts for $250. Unreal.

Ok, I'm just kidding. What an awesome bet. I would last a couple weeks, maybe.

I know it sounds bad but seriously, stay off this site. It's so bad for making you think you "need" something you don't. I know it's cost me a fortune. Learning about putters I didn't even know existed, shaft specs I was suddenly itching to try, etc....

More than likely, you'll fill your mind with an alternative addiction that only you will decide. The easy one is clothes shopping.

Good luck man. And I disagree about letting your gf win, give it your all. Bragging rights are at stake.

Also, if it starts feb 1st, you better order like 10 clubs today or tomorrow. Just sayin'.

ok, thought....

Instead of buying things, think about what you "might" want to buy afterwards as a reward to yourself. I'm not saying you will buy it when the time comes but it's on your list of possible things to get.

For me, I think about when I was a kid and saving lawn mowing money up to buy a used biggest big bertha. Took all summer to save up but I did it and it was freaking awesome. Way more rewarding then just seeing something and buying it right away.

I stopped cold turkey two or three years ago. Can’t remember now. Didn’t buy a new club for at least two years. The three years prior I had re-outfitted my entire bag once each year. So I now have at least 3 full sets of nice clubs, all of which are new enough.

I did “buy” a new driver this year after a fitting. But for the two or three years I didn’t buy anything, whenever my wife asked me what I wanted for some occasion I just said “golf gift card”. So I had racked up, in that period of time, enough credit to go out and get a new club. And immediately after receiving the club I suffered a pinched nerve that eventually led to surgery a month ago. Doc says no golf until April, but I digress...

It wasn’t that hard for me. I’ve been good at saving/investing for my entire adult life and that has paid off in many different ways. One way is that it helps me talk myself out of buying a lot of things. I just get to a point where I say to myself “Do you need that club? Is it going to make you any better, really? Aren’t your current clubs good enough? Besides, think what else I could spend that money on...”

Try that. Just think of something else you could buy with that money. Or every time you seriously consider buying a club (but don’t), take that money you would have spent and put it in some sort of savings or investment account. You’d be surprised how nice it is at the end of the year to have a few thousand to play with...but the funny thing is that you would rather continue to see the pile grow than to waste it on something.

Does she know what kind of clubs you have , like really?

I find it hard to believe you couldn't buy a club and use it without her knowing. Keeping it at the course in your locker, keeping it in the trunk of your car, at your parents place, at one of your other girlfriend's places. etc.

And that's IF she even can recognise golf clubs which most women won't. Just buy a hybrid and stick the same headcover on it. Done
