Colorado Golfers help me out! Denver area

So I'm going to Denver area in August and have 3 country clubs in the area that reciprocate with my club and allow me and my buddy to play. The three courses are:

Red Rocks Country Club $80 for me and $90 for my friend.

The Ranch Country Club $50 for me $103 for friend

Lake valley Country Club $50 for me and $95 for friend

Seeing as we will just split the total we are looking at under $100 each for all of those options. I'm wondering which of those courses is the best? Also are there any public courses that would be better for under $100?

Any info is helpful and would be greatly appreciated!!!

None of those courses are what I would consider destination courses to play on a CO visit, and all are pretty far from each other. Red Rocks is probably closest to downtown, Ranch is up in the north burbs, and LV is past Boulder. I would rank them RR, LV, and Ranch, but you can play better public courses, to be honest. Where around Denver are you staying?

August is great golf season and you can play anywhere in the front range or even up in the mountains if time allows. Fossil Trace, Bear Dance, Fox Hollow, Ridge at Castle Pines, Riverdale Dunes, and Red Hawk Ridge are all fun courses that you can probably find for under $100. If you have time to go up to the mountains Breckenridge Golf Course is fun. Really depends on where you are staying and how much driving you want to do.

Thanks for the info. Looking online it appeared that red Rock was pretty far ahead of the other 2. I'm flying in from the Midwest and meeting some friends from California driving in. So we will have a car so anywhere around an hour drive is fair game.

We are meeting for a concert at red Rock and haven't settled on where we are staying yet. Chances are we will be close to downtown Denver.

If there are public courses that are better that's what we will do. I usually use the reciprocal membership since I just don't know where to play in a new area.

Once we settle on a place to stay I will let you know and possibly that will be a better time to ask where to play.

Hey there,

Out of the three you listed I have only played Red Rocks CC and I live only a few minutes away. I agree with the above post that Red Rocks isn't that great. It has a pretty cool mountain feel (there are in fact large red rocks and you might find some wildlife on the course), but the course isn't all that great. I agree that you are likely to find better golf at public courses, but they won't have that county club feel (as far as nicer facilities, dining, bar, etc.) if that is what you are looking for. I live right near Red Rocks ampitheater as well. Both Fossil Trace and Fox Hollow are really nice public options and both are just a few minutes from Red Rocks. Fossil Trace will probably cost you a little over 100 but is really neat and has a nice mountain feel. Fox Hollow is good too and will be around 50-60, but will probably be pretty crowded on a weekend.

Check out Arrowhead, which has really cool mountain features and is about 10 minutes south of Red Rocks. If you are staying in Denver, definitely check out Commonground which is a public course in town that is pretty cool. It won't have a "mountain" feel at all but is a Tom Doak course and definitely the best public option in Denver. If you want to drive a bit I would suggest Bear Dance which is 30-40 south of Denver. If you really want to get into the mountains head up to the River Course at Keystone.

If you are heading to town for golf and a Rec Rocks concert I might suggest staying on the West side of town (check out Golden or Lakewood) and taking an uber downtown if you want to find some nightlife. Also - Bear Creek golf club is a really, really nice track that is also just a few minutes from Red Rocks. It is private and might be tough to get on but worth a try.

PM me if ya want a local to come play with y'all!

Thanks for the heads up! Really glad I posted this! sounds like I would be missing some great courses if I didnt.

All we care about is top quality courses. Country club feel is overrated. Im always concerned with pace of play but we will probably get as early a time as possible to help avoid that.

For now there is only one other golfer so I'll let you know and you are welcome to join! Always nice to have a local caddie to round out the group! ?

I agree with Red Rocks against the other two. Fossil Trace is a good track but it gets very packed. I have never had a round there that takes less than 5 hours. Combine they host a crap load of scramble tourneys. Jim Engh "3 tiered greens" and groups get backed up on drivable par 4's and golfers wanting to look at fossils.... +1 on Commonground. It hosted US MID-AM qualifying along with Colorado Golf Club last year. Great Doak track!! I would also recommend Fox Hollow, Lone Tree, Meadow Hills, Riverdale Dunes, Bear Dance, Murphy Creek and Wellshire is a hidden Ross gem.

Thanks sounds like I have a decent amount of research to do. Pace of play is definitely a big deal since the wives will have us on a stopwatch and every minute spent is another dollar they spend shopping! Still waiting for Southwest to open the flights for late August. Once they are booked I will book an air bnb and definitely be able to narrow down the acceptable driving distance.

Really appreciate the help definitely hard to find the right place looking online alone.

There are a bunch more that I didn't mention too. As long you are in the metro area, there are great courses to be had easily within an hours drive. Even Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. Castle Rock between Denver and Colorado Springs has 4 top notch courses within a 5 mile radius. The Ridge at Castle Pines. Plum Creek, a TPC course that hosted a senior event back in the 80's and is a Pete Dye design. Red Hawk Ridge is a "tamer" Jim Engh design and a joy to play.

I would never recommend an out-of-towner to play Plum Creek. It is now a sad, broken shell of what used to be a great golf course. Riverdale Dunes is a much better Dye course in infinitely better shape; and, if you have the connections, getting on Glenmoor CC would also be a treat.
