Hogans right elbow vs Tigers on the Downswing

Recommended Posts

Here i illustrate the key differences between Hogan and Tiger's right elbows in the downswing. The key differences in my humble opinion is how quickly Hogans club head drops as compared to Tigers. Hogan used the tip of the right elbow as a key aspect of the downswing and in a very aggressive and unique way. I believe this was an anti blocking/hooking technique. I will demonstrate here and keep an eye on the right elbow. Please forgive the justice I do not do for these legendary swings

idk imo consistent trajectory comes from intent, not a trick. If you took a large bucket of balls, and put a hula hoop on the ground 20 yards away. Then threw/tossed the balls with your hand. I guarantee you wouldnt throw any off trajectory. The golf swing is exactly the same. Its not really about trying to do this to get X result. It about wanting X result and doing it.

Im a big believer in neutral grip, and to get my clubhead square to target line I just sort of imagine the back of my lead wrist wacking the target.

If you throw a baseball or skip a rock, pay attention to your right elbow. It will definitely lead the throw, and how violently would depend on your intent. IE (50 yard wedge, or do u want a 150 yard wedge, or perhaps its not a yardage, just a visual)

For the Hogan swing you're very warm sir. Now try setting up with the clubface open relative to the target line then swing back with face dead square on that open face path. No further opening of the face needed after this. So in relations to the target line would be to swing back on a more inside path. Then from the top just try to hit the biggest, lowest pull hook you could. Do it however you want with just one rule. Do not let your head move towards the target. If for the life of you, you aren't able to accomplished this but hit a straight fade instead, then that means you have Hogan's mechanic or secret what have you. But if you actually succeed in hitting a pull hook then I'm sorry, but no sauce.

To further clarify, you have what we call the all square swing. It is mechanically very efficient and is widely popular among KLPGA professionals nowadays(noticed how they dominate the LPGA tour as well due to their machine like accuracy). To be honest it is way way easier to use this mechanic than to use the actual Hogan's mechanic. The major characteristic of this swing style is how the clubface will always be parallel to the spine angle. Especially noticeable from P6 and P8. Some call it the "close to open" swing style. And another "must" with this swing style is the big muscle dominance. While Hogan, contrary to popular belief swung more with "his hands" with the big muscle playing a "supporting role". So if you look at any Hogan footage you'd notice that he looks very supple and relax with his body but you can see his arms and hands muscle activates right before he takes the club back. The kicking in of the right knee has nothing to do with where his "focus" is when taking the club back. His secret is what lets him swing aggressively with his hands and arms never being able to "shut" the clubface through impact even if he tried. That's why its really hard to tell whether he wants to hit a draw or a fade simply by looking at his set-up or backswing. Because he relies very little on those elements when he wants to shape shots. Instead he "feels" the path in which to start the shot and the shot will automatically land where he aligns his body in the first place. Hope this helps.

p.s.

Love your Tiger swing as well. He finishes like that because the club exits the left shoulder different than Hogan due to his arms already crossed over from the different release pattern. But then he twist his hands clockwise to have that somewhat similar Hogan finish. But it's not the same mechanical wise. Hence the wild shots he hits from time to time.
