I don't live in Memphis rather, down the road about 75 miles. There are several nice courses in and around Memphis, including the Memphis Country Club, Tournament Players Club at Southwind (where the PGA's FedEx/St. Jude Classic is held each year; this year: June 5 through June 8) and Spring Creek Ranch just outside Memphis in Collierville. Memphis Country Club is a private course inside the city. Just call for a tee time. They should let you play. It is immaculately kept. It is narrow and the rough is relatively high, a Donald Ross style course with plumped greens. Spring Creek Ranch is a beauty of a course and should be playing perfectly now. Just south of Memphis about 25 miles or so is the Tunica National Golf and Tennis Club. This is a very nice course and if you have the time, you should give it a try. There are many more courses in the area but these are the ones with which I am most familiar. By the way, one of the nicest courses in this region of the United States is Old Waverly in the picayune town of West Point, near Starkville. If you are traveling from the panhandle, you could spend the night at Old Waverly, play the course and have supper in the club house. Great accommodations, superior food, excellent wine list and first class golf course which hosted the 1999 LPGA US Open (Inkster won). Best of luck!

How are you getting on Memphis Country Club so easily? Isn't it uber-exclusive?

Mirimichi is a really cool course, I'd recommend that, unless this guy's idea about calling up Memphis CC is true. If so, that is definitely the one you'd want to play in Memphis. It is awesome!

Know this is an older thread, just wanted to clear something up. No one that's not a member can call Memphis Country Club for a tee time. The place is very exclusive

Exactly what I thought, thanks for confirming!

Just an update for anyone browsing this post and curious about Memphis area courses. To confirm, Memphis Country Club is impossible to get on, unless invited by a member. Fred Smith (FedEx CEO) had to wait 5 years before they allowed him to join.

Since JT sold Mirimichi, maintenance has slipped quite a bit. It’s still a great layout, but no where near the “best public course in TN” rating it once enjoyed. At its peak, it was a solid 9.5 in terms of conditioning, now its about a 6. Greens are usually very good (10 or so on the stimp), but the once perfect fairways may have a bare spot or two and the once immaculate bunkers aren’t maintained nearly as well. JT used to bring in white powdered sand from the gulf coast to replenish them and the bunkers were edged perfectly.

Tunica National is a sold course. I’ve never seen it less than what I’d rate an 8.5. Prices are phenomenal. Hot as hell in the Summer and the wind is usually blowing at least 15 mph.

Spring Creek is a beautiful Nicklaus layout, but you’ll need a member invite to play there. Your Pro may also be able to get you on, if he’s a sweet talker. If you’re looking for a club to join, the latest quote for joining was about $650/mo, not including the cart package. There’s also a $300 quarterly clubhouse minimum. Lockers, if you want one, are $600/yr...you get the idea. As of December 2019, there was no initiation. But, the course is AWESOME and the practice facilities are second to none.

Wyndike Country Club has two very nice layouts. Nice enough that they host various state tournaments and other PGA qualifying events there. Unlimited family membership runs about $300/mo. No initiation if you sign up for regular 7 day a week membership.

TPC Southwind is nice. They host the annual St. Jude tournament there and it’s widely regarded as one of the hardest courses the PGA Tour plays each year. Last I heard, membership was $550/mo, give or take, with no initiation.

Any specific questions, hit me up.
