Freeways in Regulation

Recommended Posts

Here's from The Age, a local (that is from Melbourne, Vic, Australia) newspaper. Fore! Inner city golfers fight to keep drivers as balls fly onto Monash FreewayWhile I fully agree that there is an issue that needs to be fixed, council's recommendation of turning it into a par three and mini golf venue while claiming that it will grow the membership and provide a more fulfilling experience is just ridiculous. Is it really that expensive to build a tall fence?

We have a local course where the land next to it was purchased and an apartment complex put in. They had to close the driving range because it was $250,000.00 to put in adequate fencing (at least that's what they claim) to protect the complex.

So maybe it is.

This happened to a pretty decent course in Welland Ontario. Apparently, when the course was built they were supposed to build a fence along the highway but didn't. The highway was then expanded to a divided 4 lanes with a big grass median. Every day the contractors were picking up golf balls off the new lanes so the the MTO shut the course down. They converted par five to 2 shorter 3's I think but the writing was on the wall and the course recently closed. More likely the owner saw dollar signs in developing the course. It really sucked for the people who bough new houses along the course and paid a premium for a course view only get more houses built behind them.

A number of golf courses are disappearing in Melbourne, mostly being turned into apartments. There's a a huge population boom here that's been going on for a long time and doesn't seem to be slowing down. All these people (yes, I am an immigrant and therefore part of the problem) need to be housed and already the infrastructure is crumbling under the pressure. Suburban golf courses hold a fair bit of prime land that I'm sure the developers are salivating over.

Maybe this is inevitable, just can't expect to live in a small town way if the city is to grow into a proper city, but many of the comments on The Age make a reasonable point. The freeway is run privately and the operating company is raking in fairly hefty profits, and the golf course was there well before the freeway so it is rational that it should really be the freeway operator that should build the fence. Can't see that happening, though.

Can't see how a par three course with mini golf is going to attract members, either, so I'm fairly sure that will be a road to disaster. There is a valid point that if there are no accessible golf courses, a good chance is that people will stop playing (or not start at the first place). There is no shortage of great courses around Melbourne but many of them are a good 1-1.5 hour's drive from the inner suburbs.

Hunters Pointe right on the 406? Never got a chance to play there, looked like an actual links style course. My dad used to play there back in the day, interesting to know the reason why it closed.

There's a couple course in my area with um, road access. My buddy once dropped is drive with a nice high banana ball into the bed of a pickup on hole 1. After composing myself from the laughter and checking my pants for safety I immediately conceded our bet ( pitcher of beer) for that beautiful hole in one.

Of course maybe 3 weeks later different course I pull my tee shot hard and you hear the sound of it smacking a house. I hit a provisional, pretty sure it's my 3rd. So we down the hole and are wating on the group to clear the green and I see a ball just in the left rough. I tell my buddy to check it out, and he gets there and stops me from hitting my current ball. Low and behold by some miracle it my ball w/ markings. So I go play that ball (quickly as I hear a neighbor complaining about a ball hitting their roof) and make a par to his amusement. A few holes later I lose one that was maybe a few yards left of the fairway that rolled into the rough.

Golf giveth and golf taketh away.

That's it? $250,000? For a municipality, city, government, etc that's peanuts! Thats like 40ft of road....or like 25 trees - to them.

Hell, it cost $150,000 to rebuild a tennis court and parking lot for my HOA last year and our revenue is nothing compared to a city.

It is not a city owned course and they were going to have to foot the bill. I don't think they made that much off the driving range.

In my vicinity there are a few courses in housing developments that have extremely high fences surrounding practice ranges, it's ugly. One course I frequent has huge fences along side holes that parallel streets it looks damn ugly, there to protect from hitting cars. I wouldn't buy a piece of property any where insight of a huge fence or even property near a house that is surrounded by protective fence to protect against bad drives. IMO an ugly fence will likely influence property values in the wrong direction, probably the least costly and quickest to erect as opposed to redesigning the course or creating a Disneyland whatever. Saying this or that will keep people from frequenting bars or excessive drinking is NOT, a good sales pitch, plus a drunk is a drunk whether or not he's golfing.

To the Executive course point, I have golf friends that will NOT play a long or short executive course. They think they are too good for that type course. I have to laugh...sure they are, yet I give the strokes, have a much lower index, win most of the money and I play that type course least once a month for iron/short practice. You'd think people would wise up, check their egos and see how executive courses improve iron and wedge skills but that's another sad subject.

Agree with you that the fences are ugly but can't say that the freeway is particularly pretty to start with. A fence between a golf course and a freeway IMHO would be acceptable. If it was a housing estate, that would be a different question altogether. Then again, I never understood the attraction of living alongside a golf course and listening to the players cursing their shots from 7am onwards every weekend.

If I had an executive course nearby I would play it. In fact, I have an eighteen hole course ten minutes walk away where the back nine is a lot like an executive course. I play it frequently but prefer playing the full eighteen. It's a fairly quick and short course anyway. However, most courses are further away and I can't see the point of driving an hour and only playing nine shortish holes even if it would without doubt be good for my game. The scenario in the article is a bit different as the result would be that there would only be an executive course nearby. I can see that it would reduce interest in the game but also agree the idea that it would suddenly send people drinking is probably not the best one out there.

The distribution of people throughout Australia is not exactly uniform. Strong herding instinct I would say, everybody flocking to the few square kilometers where everybody else already is.
