ping eye 2+ lofts

Picked up a circa 1991 set late last season (5-w for $100 couldn't pass it up) and used them for a recent trip to Palm Desert.

I found I was often 5-7 yards short, especially around the green, where it really mattered for me (I'm a GIR +1 guy)

Found a site which showed ping eye 2 lofts from 1983 and see that the lofts are approx 1 club length shorter than my more modern clubs.

Damn, if I'd figured that before going I'd have saved myself a lot of green side bunker practice and taken a longer club.

Still, they were fun to play and it was 5 rounds in great weather. Came back to a 40 degree difference and pulled a muscle with all the snow shovelling

Eye 2's are more than a club shorter, more like 2 clubs compared to modern lofts and maybe even 3 compared to Callaway Mavrik for example. I have a set of knock-offs and I know that the PW is 49°. I think the 5 iron maybe 28°. Factor in shaft length and spring faces and I wouldn't be surprised to be hitting a current 7 iron the same distance as I hit the 4 iron from my vintage clubs.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I have a set of Ping Eye (not Eye 2) 2-SW that I use. My friend uses TM M2 irons. We hit about the same and I found if he hit a 7, I hit a 6...always one club different.

My other set is Titleist DCI Gold. The lofts of the Eyes and the DCIs are nearly the same. Once you're used to the loft differences then club selection is easy as it is with more modern sets.

Glad to hear the Eye 2's were fun to play!

Thanks folks. Took a look at my modern set and the lofts are three degrees stronger than the historic ping eye 2 + I was playing.

I know my distances for my modern set so will just remember to start one club down, when I use them again, and go from there.

I am 66 and was fitted for the modern set with graphite shafts about 4 years ago. Thought maybe the steel in the pings would be a problem. Not so.

Butter, lol

Well, if I'm honest I've had better feel from my steel shafted irons than from the graphite shafted ones that I've played. Don't know if it's a head feature or the shafts.

Not sure that 3* is correct. I've seen other threads were that number is around 1.5*. But even at 3*, the modern clubs have at least an inch longer shaft plus lighter weight shaft and any where from 3 to 5 degress stronger lofts. Depending on individual swing speed, that can equate to being 2 to 3 clubs shorter when playing the eye 2's. Now personally, I've tried playing with both the eye 2 and the +2 and they were about not quite a club difference. But against my modern set, they were at least 3 clubs difference. Again, it's about swing speed and I just don't have enough anymore to play them and enjoy the outcome. Now if one wants to play them and not overswing to get the needed distance, I suggest to look at getting them bent as strong as possible (the +2 would be better suited) and reshafted with modern lengths and appropriate flex. I thought about doing that myself, but the cost factor for me was not worth it. One also has to look at the aspect of playing in events that those clubs would be not allowed.

Eye 2+ plays exactly 1 club weak from i210s for me. Example if I'm using 4 iron from the i210, it would be the 3 iron Eye 2, 9 iron Eye 2 plays like W iron from i210s. Flight same for me, zz-lite vs DG 120, spin was better with the Eye 2. Long story short, sold the i210s.

The Eye 2+ is 3* stronger on most irons than the Eye 2.

The pitching wedge is two degrees stronger in the plus. 48.5 degrees instead of 50.70 degrees.

The 9 to 5 irons are each one (1) degree stronger.

for example the 5 in the + is 27.5 degrees as opposed to 28.5 degrees in the regular eye 2.

The 4 in the plus is 24.5 degrees in the eye 2 the 4 is 24.7 degrees, or only 1/5th of a degree, not even a quarter of a degree, virtually identical.

The 3, 2 and 1 irons have identical lofts in both sets, whether eye 2 or eye 2 +.

Nowhere is there a difference of 3 degrees as you seem to suggest.

OK, I'm wrong. It was just the SW and LW. Thanks for pointing that out and setting the record straight in in a year old thread that has already mentioned what you say. Great first post, Welcome to Wrx. I'm looking forward to more positive contributions from you in the future. Cheers

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.
