Your most unpopular Golf opinions?

Rarely if ever would all tees be on the tips. One or two tees a day shouldn't make a big difference. Also, in my 25+ years playing, I haven't seen length be a large contributor to slow play. Its that slow people do a lot of non-golf stuff during a round. The course I grew up on had two 600 yard par 5s that played 570+ from the shortest tees. One was the first hole. They didn't slow play down much. Just hit, walk up and hit it again, and so on. Actually, would probably slow down play more if they had additional tee boxes adding to the work starters had to do.

Well . . . I did say "if I understand what you are saying . . . " Apparently I didn't. I thought the suggestion was there would be one set of tees but they would be from the usual spot . . . like all tips, or all forward. My bad.

But in some cases, it IS the length that makes slow play. I occasionally play with a woman in her mid-80s. It takes her a good three hours to play nine holes. She doesn't play slowly. She just can't hit the ball very far anymore. She's doing the best she can and doesn't waste any time. I enjoy playing with her but wish there were senior women's tees she could play from.

Just one overarching opinion is that sports fans, in general, are idiots.

Here's a few:

Golf is a noun, not a verb. You don't go golfing; you go play golf. Sheesh.

The only constant in golf is the golf marketers telling you this club will solve all your problems. The 2nd constant is the number of golfers who believe that nonsense.

It takes about 10 years for there to be a significant improvement in golf club technology. There's no difference between a new driver and a 5 year old driver. Except for the OEM's bank account

Going to a Golf Galaxy (or Edwin Watts, or Walmart) and shopping for golf balls is as confusing as grocery shopping for toothpaste. There's way too many models. I shouldn't have to google info on the ball I want to buy as I'm standing next to it.

Hey, sell sleeves of golf balls again!

I sometimes prefer to watch the LPGA on TV over the PGA.

Personally, I wouldn't mind too much. I am not a long hitter by G.WRX standards but long enough to handle most holes. With all respect, I do however, believe there is a logical flaw in your argument that long tees would not slow down the game. You are thinking fairways where you just walk up to the ball and whack it again. That's fair enough but the slowness of longer tees comes from having to hit substantially longer approach shots. That leads to missed greens and to finding trouble around the greens more often, and that's what takes time. Quite a lot of it. Regulation golf is fairly quick, putting one or two average players of each flight into bunkers on each green not so.

The word "each" above may be an exaggeration as in your model not all holes would be that long but still many would be too long for many players.

So many stories about people not moving up to the tees that make sense for their game! I can carry my driver around 240, and I often play the "white" tees at around 6000-6200 yards. Like you say, I have to think and not bash driver off every tee. I can occasionally cut a corner or carry a hazard with a great driver swing, that I would never have a chance to if I played back further. Sure, I can play from back there and score OK and even make a birdie or two, but on most courses, the variety, shot values, and strategy is better from the "white" tees. Yet I play with folks who are shorter and have higher handicaps who always play from further back. Or people who can't even carry 200 yards who are playing those white tees, and would never in their lives consider moving up to the dreaded red tees.

If you don't slow down play, tee off from whatever tees you like. But It's a MUCH better game from the proper tees! If you've never played the "senior" or "red" tees, try it at least a few times. College players do it as as an exercise, why don't you? Because it's uncomfortable. Because "other people" will think you're weird. So what? Let them think what they want, that's their business -- maybe you'll open their minds a bit.

This by definition is an unpopular opinion, since whenever I'm paired with random "average" recreational golfers, they play tees too far back almost every time. Partly this is the fault of courses without enough variety in the tee boxes, but it's still true.

I tend to agree with you on that but I can see the value for someone as a training aide--- But yeah golf today can be gimmicky but then again that is Marketing 101

Fix your Fu%^ing ball marks on the green! If you can pick the ball up you to clean and align it for your putt, you should be able to repair the pitch mark on the green.

It's such a small thing, too! I look at a round of golf that I played with my cousin and his young son. I was about the only one who ever put effort into repairing my ball marks. Though, I suppose, if lining up your putter with a line on the ball takes too long, then getting out your divot tool and repairing the marks takes an eternity too long...

Unpopular Golf Opinion #318 - Clubs are only "Mint" once...........after assembly at the factory. After that, they have been "unused" until hit. If they have been hit, they are used........Period.

Unpopular Golf Opinion #173 - Golf should be played as 1 man, a bag with up to 14 clubs, by the written rules and scored accordingly. All other forms should be considered a Leisurely activity.

I get the walking thing, but I’ve never understood this strong of a stance on it. At least in Scottsdale, there are quite a few world class courses that aren’t walkable. Totally depends on the design of the course. I agree though that the best/ideal courses have unlimited design options and a walkable routing.

I will jump on the "this is dumb" bandwagon. You set your putter up and then walk around behind it to see if its lined up how you want it? How is that any different than using a Sharpie line on the ball to do so the same thing?

And what about the crowd of "I can't putt with the line on the ball because when I stand over it, I don't feel like its aimed at the hole and will subconsciously push/pull the putt." The exact same thing is going to happen with the stand-up putter.

Talking of Mint... you may be interested in looking at the grading for used vinyl records. Not sure if there is a standard for grading used golf clubs but in the vinyl collectors' world many collectors are very strict about grading, and the sellers' reputation tends to largely depend on the dependability of their grading. You wouldn't buy from an undependable source over the Internet.

Good (G) is actually pretty bad, it just means that the record plays through without skipping but with a lot of noise and worn cover. Very Good (VG) is borderline whether I would buy one unless the record is really hard to find and I really want it. VG+ is the starting point for ones that are nice to listen to. I don't grade anything Mint (M) as nothing is perfect. A sealed record is Near Mint (NM) unless for example the sleeve is damaged in shipping. Once opened, both the sleeve and the media become NM- but it's fairly common that a record doesn't play well straight off the wrap. I've even got sealed records with a piece of vinyl missing. Finding anything old in NM- is very hard in rock/prog/punk/etc, a bit easier in jazz and classical. I have a few rock/prog records in NM- from the early 70's but they come from archives and are practically never played and stored in a controlled environment.

In golf, I can't see anything that's being used for digging divots into the ground being in the equivalent of NM-. But scratches affect playability less than in records so the grading criteria are not directly comparable.https://www.goldminemag.com/collector-resources/record-grading-101
