Looking for ball suggestions

Hi, I am male, 52 yr and want to buy new golf balls, therefore I am looking for some suggestions. I am playing golf for 10 years, have Hcp 28, I don't play tournaments, because they are only at the weekend in my area and I don't have time at the weekend. So far I had mostly lakeballs, but at least all from the same brand or model, mostly Top Flite. Now I want to get some new balls and I know it's pretty difficult to get some suggestions, because everybody plays different, has a different swing, speed and so on. I don't have a slice, my drives are mostly straight (no draw unfortunately), around 200 metres (220 yards?) and my ball flight is pretty high. I like pitches and mostly the balls stops where it hits ground. Of course my game is not constant. ;-) I don't need expensive balls, no titleist Vx1 or similar, but also no cheap crap balls. Which balls would you prefer for my game? Thanks!!

You can sometimes find Srixon Q-star balls on sale. They are a decent, mid-priced golf ball. Same for some of the Bridgestones. I typically play Taylormade TP5 but find the Taylormade Project (a) pretty similar and I'm not sure I could tell the difference if there was no label. These aren't the cheapest balls but often can be found for about half the price of Pro V1s.

Also agree with the post above, the Kirkland balls are a decent ball.

Buy used from lostgolfballs or similar.

drop and stop balls only exist in the high end tour models. The qstar tour/project a type balls spin better than the pure distance balls, but they don’t pop and stop like a ProV1/Chrome Soft/Tp5/Zstar/TourB.

if you want that greenside and short game performance, play an elite ball, and buy it used. Mint from lostgolfballs are very reasonably priced and are honest in great shape.

Good luck. If you hit it 200+ straight and work on your iron play you will have your handicap down soon!

Forgive the ignorance, but is the project (a) going away??

I just recently found this ball (LOVE IT)...actually been trying to find the "cheaper cousin"...if anyone knows of a 2-piece or a $20/dozen ball that is similar, I'm ears (for the winter). I used to play the Noodle Soft (NOT the new "long and soft" since Taylormade bought the brand, which I just can't hit), but the old noodle soft in the green box from Wal-mart. That was the best ball EVER. $14 for 15 balls (free sleeve in the box). 2-piece, but revolutionary for the time. They don't make them anymore, so I started playing the srixon soft's, which are as close to the noodle as I have found, but they are $20/Dozen. Tried the Project (a)'s and didn't lose any distance, flew strait, and stopped better (not as good as a chromesoft, but close). Not to mention feels great (never liked prov1's feel).

to the OP, as mentioned above, the Srixon Soft is an excellent cheap(ish) ball for what I'm guessing your swing speed is (85-100 MPH). however, if you can pay $10 more (TM Project (a) and get get a 3 piece ball that rivals the tour ball (TP5, is almost the same ball, just tuned for a slightly faster swing speed) I don't think you can go wrong.

I tried the Kirkland 3 piece and didn't care for it. To me, it plays like a prov1 and I am one of the few that really doesn't get along with that ball. But for the value, it is definitely not a bad ball. I did lose a club of distance though and didn't see a ton of spin in the short game, a little softer, but I tend to bump and run for than pitch and grab so some of that is dependent on the type of short game you play.

All of the suggestions will work, it really is just up to what you prefer in a ball. I like soft feel, have a medium tempo swing and don't need my ball to spin back, but don't want it to roll wayy out either.

Project (a) all day.

Good luck!

I’m decent at golf and hit the ball normal distances. I’ve tried so many different ball brands over the years and TaylorMade Project (a) balls go the straightest and furthest for me on iron shots; it’s noticeably further than other brands. I feel like Project (a) balls were specifically made to fly further for average golfers on iron shots. I don’t really notice much difference between ball brands on driver shots. Putting and chipping: Pro V1 all day...but Project (a) isn’t too far off...

Project (a) is great but is being replaced. The price of the new model is higher than you need to go with ($35 per dozen). I'd recommend the Srixon Q-Star Tour ($20 per dozen as others have said). Either that or go with a direct to consumer (DTC) brand like Snell (MTB Black or MTB-X), Vice (Pro), or OnCore (Elixir). All are great tour balls at a steeply discounted price when you buy in bulk or catch them during a BOGO deal. No matter what you go with, go with a ball that has a urethane cover. The performance is unmatched and since you like to spin your pitches rather than chip and run, you'll really benefit from a urethane cover. I saw at Dick's that Maxfli put out a new tour ball and they always have low prices and good deals. I can't vouch for their performance though since I've never hit them.

Tour Response is the ball replacing the Pro (a). Sounds like it's going to be a winner?! Going to try these along side the BS XS/RXS.

This is flat breaking my heart...I just got myself "ok" with spending $25-30 a dozen as I "don't lose 3 balls a round" anymore...I was just about to start giving TM some credit for their offerings, but dang...now I'm just pissed.

I have not really cared for the Snell or Vice, to me they are like the kirklands, ok, but pretty close to prov1's and as mentioned, for me, not the ball...dang it...

I would look at the Srixons like others have said...as well as the Wilson Staff Duo Soft which go for about $20 per dozen.

It really doesn't matter which one you chose, but I would highly recommend picking one and only using that one type. There's no reason to try chasing the perfect ball since it doesn't exist. Chose one and stick with it...learn how it plays and use it to your advantage.
