Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

That's a shame, but I could see the writing on the wall there last year when I went for the first time. The course itself was in fine shape, but there were lots of little things to be seen that showed they were cutting corners and conserving the budget. Not to mention the goofy routing that needed adjusting.

Give yourself a bit of a break. You haven't played in over 3 weeks.

Played Cog #3 today, because it was 50° and it’s February lol. Greens still have aeration holes and the course was either frozen or soggy, but I’m not complaining, because it’s February and I got to golf outside!!! Almost holed out for eagle on a par 4, good round with friends. I can’t wait to play it in the spring, I do like the lay out. It would be a good course to try to go low when conditions are better. Cant wait for spring time!

also, was wondering since there are a lot of guys here, has anyone thought of doing a wrx outing? It would be nice putting faces to names.

WITB TBD for ‘24

... They have done this a couple times in the past and use Course #1's fairway. Tee off from the tee box and paint a grid all the way to 400 yds. Last one I saw maybe 15 years ago, a college kid hit some 400+ yd drives with a good 10mph wind at his back and missed the fairway by a foot.

Earlier this week, we lost a great guy in Brian Comiskey, who had been the Super at Pinecrest in Huntley until incurring health challenges and having to retire about 6-7 years ago. Brian was as passionate of a golfer as you'll ever find and he took immense pride in keeping his course in top condition. Back in the Dark Ages, he took me under his wing as I attempted to make the high school golf team as a freshman with a lot of desire but lacking the talent to match. He was a great golfer, a great leader and just a great guy.

He'll truly be missed.

I live in Cary and have been eyeing there Membership deals for two years and think I might jump on it this year. It is a nice course I played it 20 years ago on the HS golf team and remember it having some pretty good elevation and the hole by hole tour on there website looks good. They have a really nice driving range and they also have a caddy program which is appealing.

The deal they had to start last year was like $1500 which included locker, driving range, and maybe two guest passes but looking at this deal this year it almost looks like a no brainier. Although it is a one year only deal I want to see what the second year costs are as I do not want to be a one and done. Only thing about MCC is that they might be struggling as they did open the restaurant to the public last year. I was also contemplating Woodstock Country Club which has similar pricing but they hit you with F&B dues minimums.

yeah, i was looking at that too. My girlfriend teaches in woodstock but doesnt want to live in town and run into students/parents all the time so we were looking at moving to the crystal lake area but i found a pretty nice apartment building on the river in mchenry thats a quarter mile walk to MCC so im pushing for that option pretty hard. I could go through $100 a month just in range balls somewhere so feels like a no brainer

Speaking of the new USGA Distance Report, over the last 10-20 years, how many really long courses have been built in Chicago? Highlands of Elgin is only 7000 yards. So is the redo at The Preserve. Blackstone is 6734. I just don't know of many 7200-7500 yard courses that are being made in Chicago. Maybe that's happening in other places, but is it here? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Rich Harvest farms comes to mind. I don't know what has opened in the past 20 years, but I would think that is the only one that had any intentions of hosting any type of meaningful events. Mistwood is just over 7000 after the renovation. I don't think courses are really being built at all the last 20 years in the area in general. I'm not from here, but would be interested to see what new courses have opened the past 20 years.

White Hawk is the only one I can think of. The range courses are willing to go seems to be between 6800-7150, and there are plenty of those in the area, including some par 71’s. I have no issue with that given that most golfers don’t even consider playing from tees that go past a certain length. It’s just basic laws of supply and demand.

Lost Marsh was opened less than 20 years ago, and is 6800 yds at the tips.

Harborside's two are both 7100 yds, but are 25 years old. Prairie Landing is also 25 years old, and is just shy of 7000 yds. Broken Arrow opened at roughly the same time, and is just over 7000 yds. Heritage Bluffs is 27 years old, and 7100 yds.

Seems the trend for longer courses petered out at the turn of the century.

Dubs is 7500+, and hasn't hosted an event for a while.

Butler National is 7335, and hasn't hosted an event for quite some time.

The Glen Club is 7252, and hosts a Korn Ferry tournament.

If we’re counting private courses there are more. Chicago Highlands is 7500, Rich Harvest Farms is 7700, Butler, Conway Farms, etc. However, the only publics in the area that are over 7200 are White Hawk (if you play the Silver 9), Pine Meadows and Dubs. I thought the Starboard course at Harborside was longer but I guess not. For tournaments, Stonewall plays as a 7124-yard par 71 since the 8th hole plays as a par 4.

USGA's Distance Report: "Many courses cannot or will not expand to 7000 yards or beyond, leading to concern that they may eventually lose the ability to present a full challenge for the longer-hitting golfers. For a course of, say, 6000 to 6500 yards, the issue is not about hosting elite male events, but about potentially losing the ability to attract and keep golfers who may come to perceive the course as too short from the longest tees. Even if not widely known or used for premier tournaments, such courses can be highly valued by local golfers and communities and are at risk from increasing hitting distances."

How many courses around here are only 6,500 yards? I can't think of too many, but I just might not know them. Do you think that in Chicago shorter courses are really in danger of not being able to attract and keep golfers because they think they are too short?

... I don't see it. I play Prairie Bluff a ton and it is a good example of offering everything and they could go to 7000+ if they wanted. Of course it is in the middle of nowhere so land wasn't an issue when they built it. The majority of players I see use the White tees at 6054 and frankly struggle from there with the heather and water that is only in play for poor golfers. The Blue tees get the next most usage at 6466 and I think a fair test considering it is usually pretty windy. College kids and some long hitting players hit from the Gold tees at 6893. But I rarely see anyone on those tees. I will play them on a calm day but at 66 they are all I can handle. Then, they can stretch it out even further if they want to use the alternate tees on #8 and #15. #15 is a monster from the tees at the boundary fence. They certainly have room to stretch a few other holes if they wanted but for such a small percentage of players, it just doesn't make financial sense.

The Chicago area has enough cautionary tales that I highly doubt another public course will be extended out to 7200-7500 yards. Dubs is the obvious one. Re-designed to host a US Open and now it gets a fraction of the play it used to. Also, when it debuted, GDN was being lauded. “Forest Preserve National” and all. The Forest Preserve found out real quickly that the cost to maintain didn’t justify the revenue it produced.

I understand why The Glen Club is as long as it is. They host tournaments and are Northwestern’s home course. But that and Pine Meadows are anomalies. I don’t know why White Hawk is as long as it is. It seems pointless since no one plays the tips there.

I'm guessing the number of players who average more than 275 yds are a very small group. 5% or less? Do these players bring enough revenue to a course to cover the maintenance costs of stretching the course over 7000 yds? I doubt it.

There are plenty of courses in the area that max out at ~6500 yds. Glencoe, Glenview Park, Wilmette, Deerpath, Sportsman's, Lake Bluff, Winnetka, Renwood, Tanna Farms, White Pines, Oak Brook, Willow Crest, Cog Hill #1 and #3, Gleneagles, Coyote Run, River Oaks, Ravisloe, Lincoln Oaks, Tuckaway, Cardinal Creek, Jackson Park, Woodruff, Inwood, Phillips Park, Bridges at Poplar Creek, Hughes Creek, Villa Olivia, Bartlett Hills, Hilldale, Glendale Lakes, Maple Meadows, Bloomingdale, Fox Run, Mt, Prospect, Arlington Lakes, Crane's Landing, Countryside (T), Brae Loch, Antioch, Boone Creek, Bonnie Dundee, Chick Evans, and Indian Boundary to name just a few.

BTW, Thunderhawk, Odyssey, GC of Illinois, and Big Run are over 7000 yds. White Deer Run, Bolingbrook, Sanctuary. and Seven Bridges are over 7100. Village links is over 7200.
