Center Shafted Putters

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is more of a discussion or just a gripe but where are all of the center shafted putters going?

Before I continue, keep in mind I have had a Scotty Golo S since it was released in 2012.

I know, I know, there are CS putters out there but not as many as there used to be or at least in my eyes not as many as before. I guess the market isn't there? But I find myself every year getting the winter-WRX bug* when seeing the 'prototypes' on tour and seeing a new CS mallet putter and thinking "sweet baby yoda, I'm in!"; only to be disappointed when released to the public that they're not offering it.

As much as I love my Golo S, I've always had a thing for the Odyssey 7 CS, the true CS. But I haven't seen any styles like it that I've liked.

Any others out there that feel the same way or have seen new CS putters that they may want to share.

*it's warm enough to not snow but cold enough to keep me off the course. I'm just being whiny

Other than SeeMore and the odd Ping or Odyssey offering I think you'd probably have to go the way of custom or modification.

If you've ever seen the collection @Leftymoose has on Instagram he's a lefty who likes CS putters. Almost no major brand will offer these OTR so a lot of his are turned to CS after.

I've noticed that as well and would love to shell out the $$ to get one.
A couple people here and that I've talked to in person have mentioned going custom (making a non-CS into a CS). I'd be up for it and willing to check out companies that do it on the norm.@MattM97 I'll be checking out Lefty.

Keep it mind that not all Seemores are CS, they are just straight shafts. Scotty Cameron’s are the same way, that’s how they keep the toe hang. I’ve always preferred true CS putters from Odyssey and Ping.

My favorite center shafted putter of all time is my Scotty Bullseye blade. Gamed it exclusively for many years. And it still sees bag time on more than one occasion per year!

I've putted with a CS (SeeMore, Odyssey) for about 15 years but am going to a putting fitting next week with SAM to see if maybe I need something with more toe flow. I'm lefty who plays righty and is left-eye dominant so the CS setup works for me...but SAM may tell a different story.

Oh, I think I see the problem here: there’s not an “S” in the 2020 Special Select lineup? Get over “new” and get over “Scotty”. Seriously, there’s tons of great CS putters out there. Plenty to fit whatever you’re looking for. If you’ve got an arcing stroke, the original FGP has more toe hang than any crooked-necked, heel-shafted Anser copy. You like the Tyne and wish they offered in CS? Check out the Huntington Beach 11. Wish you could get a Japan-only Double Wide CS? Bettinardi has a bunch of CS wide blades going back years and years. Wish you could get a CS Spider? You can! (that limited release chalk...man...) Sure, the Odyssey, Ping, and Scotty CS offerings have been slim and uninspiring lately. Who wouldn’t like to see all those milled PLDs released? But you have to admit, the 6 STR is pretty sweet.

Here’s a few recent examples from my collection: Piretti Teramo, Xenon Fatback, Bettinardi iNOVAi 3.0, Kuchar 2HM, Studio Stock 28, and SeeMore PTM3.

Don’t laugh...

I took my daughter and her friend to a laser tag and glow in the dark mini putt place. You know that type of putter at those places...this one wasn’t the worst, but still junk. Anyway, couldn’t miss! And I rolled some balls around the cup to see if they funnel in and maybe a couple holes, but rest were normal.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just so happens I am in SE Asia at the moment and the local golf stores have the center-shafted model. And it's terrific.

This from a guy who HATES center-shafted putters. I believe I have a psychological aversion to there putter because it's the only club in the bag where I'm being required to "shank" it. LOL Every other club I'm trying to hit a spot away from the shaft but with a CS putter I'm being asked to hit the "shaft". Not good. LOL

Another thing that bothers me about CS models it that when I check out the face-balancing (I prefer FB putters for my preferred SBST stroke), the head kind of "wallows" a bit and doesn't even always settle in the FB position. Additionally, when I putt and (slightly of course) miss the sweet spot I almost always feel the shaft twist in my hands, even with a more forgiving, perimeter weighted head. Whether or not the putter's MOI allows that "missed ss" putt to start on line or not the twisting feel of the shaft is disconcerting. Heel shafted FB putters seldom have nearly as much of that same twisting feel off a slight miss.

If you've followed all that, the CS "10" is DIFFERENT in 2 ways. Just as heel shafted face balanced putters go right to the FB position (as opposed to the CS ones "wallowing"), the Odyssey 10 CS does as well. Goes right to the FB position. Also, the feel of the slight miss doesn't cause any, or at least not nearly as much, of a twisting sensation. Feels much more like the heel shafted model.

It probably has to do with the Cally hosel for the CS model. The shaft ends not with being attached/inserted directly into the head. There's a small curved hosel from the shaft into the head. Don't even think you can see that hosel at address,

Putted with it in the store a bit (not much area there for putting) and it swings and feels terrific.

Not sure I'll get one though as there's no area worth speaking about in that store to really give it a decent test. Also a bit pricey(?) not being in the USA. Costs about $370 (no sales tax though so that's a plus LOL).
