Getting three MacGregor iron sets ready for the season

I have a little time on my hands and am lengthening the shafts on three sets of MacGregor irons to play to play plus 1/2 inch over the new standard 38 inch 5 iron. Also re-gripping with midsize grips. Not too many choices out there with .580 cores for the two older sets to avoid the work of tape buildup to get to.600.

I am using steel counter balance extensions to help manage swing

weights that extend 3 inches into the butt ends of the shafts. the re-issue Colorkroms actually had .600 diameter shafts which was fortunate.

I am only doing 3-9 iron on the CF4000 set ( no 2 iron ) ; 4-9 plus SW on older ColoKroms ( no 2 &3 iron) and 4-W on the re-issue Colokrom set ( no 3 iron ).

The early models have Tour Action shafts on set is Regular ( R 0 other has no designation. Re-issue Colokroms seem to have True Temper shafts from the partial shaft band on one iron.

These should be fun to play as soon as I get past my rotator cuff surgery rehab as well as my Australian blades and Yamaha ST30 aluminum bronze irons.

Sounds like a great project. I'm 6'4" and so I am always interested in stories about lengthening. If your going +1/2" over modern how much are you adding? Some of those old sets are pretty short...

I am adding 1-1/2 inches since the old clubs are basically only one inch shorter . I'm 6'2" but need clubs plus 1/2" .

It is fun to do your own work on clubs when you can as it is more gratifying in the long run.

Indeed it is! I've extended a set or two in my time but I've always felt like I didn't get what I was looking for. I butt-weighted a set of extended Fg-17s and they felt better in my hands but not in play. To be truthful I think it's all in my head. If I would just stick with one set for more that a month I'd probably learn to enjoy them!
