919's Can't decide

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at getting a set of 919's but can't choose a good makeup. I'm about a 6 hdcp and my driver SS is about 109. I currently play Apex MB/X Forged combos in X100 shafts. My misses are mainly thin. I can hit a 7i about 170 and a 5i about 193.

I liked the x forged but had trouble controling distances and wanted to try blades.

Honestly just ready for something new this season as I feel my current setup is not optimal for me and I don't love 'em.

I've read so many good things about the Tour, HM Forged and HM Pro that I would like some opinions before I start whittling down my search. Anyone that had similar thoughts and ended up with the 919 - what did you go with?

Last summer I played a set of 919 Forged 4-5 iron and Tour 6-PW and then ended up swapping out a 5 Forged for the Tour because it was easier to hit and more forgiving than expected. Great setup just always played Titleist so switched back to T100 when they came out.

Remember, all is personal preference. I hit the HM, HMP, and the Forged 5 iron to compare prior to purchase, was pretty set I would go HMP, but no contest after hitting all 3, Forged was the best, for ME

Originally ordered 4/5 forged to go with 6-P tour and then ordered 4/5 in the tour and favored the tour 4-PW.

That said, I think if you need a little psychological boost with the long irons the forged are great and offer a little more ball speed.

The 919T heads are so consistent. I am likely moving on to ho but will not get rid of them.

Yes! They are probably less game improvement than hmb... thinner top lines. Not sure why there aren't more comparisons there.

After a hernia/hernia surgery last year I ordered a set of 919 HMP's based on a 100ish driver SS. I ordered 4-P modus 120S and thought they were fantastic. I like smaller faces with minimal offset and these seemed to tick the boxes as I was looking for a hotter faced club. I went and compared the HMP's to the forged prior to ordering and did not like the forged. I loved the HMP's and I figured with my mid 80's game of last year they were the best option and I was more than happy with them.

Fast forward to 3 months of rest. I started back hitting into a net a few weeks ago and happened across an instructor that is also a top 100 mizuno fitter. I scheduled a lesson last wednesday and a few minutes into the lesson he tells me I'm in the wrong shaft, I assume he means I need regular as I wasn't really watching the numbers on the monitor, nope 7i ss is 95. He tosses me on the shaft optimizer then loads a x100 into a fitting HMP my dispersion goes from around 30 yards to 10 yards and just as long, if not longer. I try a couple different shafts and back to the x100. I am sold....reshafting the HMP's...until the Hoe in me asked him to hit a 919 Tour head.

I tested the 919 tour and the rest is history, I had to have them, they just felt amazing and the dispersion was just as good, a little shorter but I was ok with that. I then thought about my terrible handicap and hit the forged thinking a forged 4,5 may be the best option. I could not get along with the forged, for the second time. There is just something about the 919F that does not work for my swing or my eye. I decided to just go 919 tour 4-P and ordered my set last wed. I received the irons yesterday, mizuno's turn around was crazy and I could not be happier. 4-P 919T x100's, modern lofts, z-cords.

I hit them in a dome yesterday and into my net today. They are absolutely perfect, I have never had better ball striking or confidence standing over the ball. The top line/shape is exactly what I prefer and having the correct shaft is a game changer. I'm in the honeymoon right now but I don't foresee myself changing clubs again this year (I have played 11 sets of irons in the past 2 years (7 sets of mizuno's)).

sorry for the novel, but my vote obviously goes full 919 Tour set.

This is a glowing writeup on the Tours that convinces me I would belong mostly in the Hot Metal Pros! Maybe 9 and PW in the Tours. The HMP shape just looks better from address than the Forged to me.

Yes - They are fake - that's why I posted the pics. Didn't mean to suggest in my comments that they weren't - not sure where that was done. I only hit a few forged in the store, I actually went last night and hit a few of the Tour and HMP's too. The guys have all had good input to help me decide.

I loved the way the Tours felt but they didn't really go anywhere for me. Really liked the HMP. Prob go w/ what dMeeks suggests - HMP and 8,9, PW in tour.

I am/was in almost identical situation as you. Same SS and normally distances. I went and got fitted on a Trackman between the Forged and Tour because those 2 fit my eye the best and I loved the satin finish. The Hot Metals were just too big/thick for me. I was pretty much sold on the Tours before I went in, but after taking swings for about an hour and then comparing numbers, it was pretty night and day for me at least to go with the Forged. Tighter dispersion, higher ball speed, higher launch (despite the strong lofts). Normally I buy based off feel and look, but I couldn't deny the numbers and they made my decision for me.
