Slope is NOT a measure of difficulty. See the real life example in post #56. Tell me which course is tougher in that real life example.

 

Look at it this way. If you have a log that is four feet long and a log that is three feet long, the four-foot log is 33% longer than the three-foot long. However, 33% is not a measure of the log's length. It's a relative measure of how much longer one log is than the other.

 

Slope is like the 33%.

I'd suggest that "relative difficulty" is a subset of a larger group that is "difficulty". The Scratch (Course ) Rating and Bogie Ratings are both measures of difficulty, each one intended to apply to a specific group of golfers. Slope is a calculated relationship between the two, so to me its also a measure of "difficulty", defined in a very specific manner.

But really, does any of this petty argument over the terminology have anything to do with the original topic?

Cmon Road...you’re a smart guy. Read the post you replied to. NSX had replied to a post that stated “ Slope is a measure of how much more difficult/easy a course from a particular set of tees is for a bogey golfer than for a scratch golfer.”

 

You replied with a gem “Slope is a formula based ratio of the two. Slope is the RELATIVE difficulty for a bogey golfer COMPARED to a scratch golfer.”

 

Pray tell... do you really see a valid difference between the two? A common man would understand that “how much more difficult/easy” is not an amount but a comparison. As in a ratio. By the letter of the law you are correct that the CR and the BR are those measures. But to most of us the terms “how much more difficult” and “relative difficulty “ are synonymous.

All courses are different. Would you adjust an "A" in one class because it was easier than the "A" you earned in a much more difficult class? GHIN takes into account the slope and rating of the course, and makes adjustments accordingly. Breaking par on an "easy" course is still quite an accomplishment.
