Golf Trip Last Weekend in March

Hi all, looking for some guidance/ recommendations on planning a long weekend trip as a group of 4. We're considering:

Texas (Dallas/ FW?)Florida/ South Carolina (any city)RTJ Trail (fly into ATL and stick somewhat close by)In terms of value and considering the time of year, what location would you choose any why? Also, any booking info or guides would be greatly appreciated. Ideally, we would fly in Thursday evening and golf Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday and fly home Sunday evening or Monday. A stay and play would be nice, but we also aren't opposed to renting a car. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

@smeal818 My vote would be RTJ Trail.
I'll actually be there the weekend of the 13th, 3rd year in a row.
If you're flying into ATL make Grand National your home base and drive out to Capitol Hill on Saturday.

For a long weekend, I'd look to stay on the east coast. Charleston, Hilton Head/Savannah, St. Simons Island, and Jacksonville are options. Maybe one destination has better airfare pricing and times for your group.

Hard to recommend flying across the country to Phoenix right now, especially for a long weekend. Golf rates there are obscene, i.e. paying $180 for a $60 course.

I've had good weather the last two years going mid-March. It got warm enough to wear shorts a couple of days and in the morning it was only cool enough to need a single extra layer.

There was some dormant rough, but fairways and greens were in great shape. One thing to double check on the trail website is their aeration schedule. With those two sites you'll have five courses to choose from, so you should be fine, but it's worth a double check.

Both Capitol Hill & Grand National don't have any scheduled maintenance. Were you typically playing 18 or 36 a day? How have you scheduled your trips in the past + lodging? Appreciate all the help

I do 36 a day. It's pretty easy since carts are included in the unlimited packages. Since I'm solo I usually just book the golf through the RTJ booking request form and sort out accommodations myself.

They will also arrange lodging for you if you ask them. A guy who works for me had them book rooms as well if you want them to do that for you. Turn around on the booking request was next day for me.

Myrtle Beach is more of a golf trip experience than Florida. Although you never quite know what you're going to get from a conditioning standpoint. RTJ trail is good, but man...I would avoid Atlanta altogether with the ridiculous.

 

Best place for a golf trip in Florida is usually the Orlando area. I would feel more confident in the weather in Orlando in March than just about anywhere else. So if avoiding cold weather is your priority, than Florida would be my pick. If you want a real golf trip experience, than Myrtle Beach. If you want to get stuck in traffic and not know if you're going to miss your flight...then fly into Atlanta.

Thanks, Rich. If we do RTJ, we would have 3 days of golf (fri, sat, sun) and travel Thursday/ Monday in ATL to avoid that headache. I'll check out Orlando, too, thanks.

I’m a big fan of the RTJ trail. I’m heading to Muscle Shoals myself next weekend.

if RTJ, you have 2 "best" options, b'ham or auburn/mont ... drive to b'ham & play oxmoor/ross bridge over those 3 days in some combo (oxmoor valley is the toughest; rb is probably the best conditioned), with a thought to farmlinks as a stand alone 18 on one day (hour drive or so to get to it) ... there are a couple of other public courses you could play, also (ballantrae or timber) ... or go to auburn and stay there, replaying both or one & venturing to mont/capital hill for a 36 day ... par threes are decent enough to consider, but check maintenance even though i don't think there's generally anything for march/early april for bermuda or bent ...

 

early spring in the south can be beautiful most days, but some can be filled with a bit of terror ...

Thanks, tiderider. We're doing Friday at Grand National, Saturday 36 at Capitol, and then finishing Sunday on the other Grand National course. We're a little leery of the weather, but I guess just hoping for the best!

Booked the last weekend in March - trip should be around $1,100 all in including flight, rental, drinks/ food. Very pleased with the booking process through RTJ's site, would highly recommend.
