I am going with a reverse answer. The story starts several years ago when I went for months playing terrible golf. I was probably using a set of top Callaway irons at the time. I had some time to kill one day so I went into Play It Again Sports, a used sports equipment store. I saw a complete set of Diawa irons with regular flex graphite shafts. The model had a good amount of offset and thin top line. A combination that really looked good. They wanted $59. I noticed the PW had a splintered shaft so I offered $39 and bought the set. I quickly repaired the shaft with crazy glue a fine fiber glass cloth. I played the very next day and hit the ball great. I put the set in my bag and never looked back. It's funny how a change like that completely kick started my game. I have several stories of buying clubs, especially putters only to have them be a disaster on the coarse.

I've had so many now it is frightening. Top of the list for me was the Callaway FT-3 Tour head. My manager at the local big box store I worked at the time "fit" me for it, as I hadn't jumped into that crazy world quite yet. Monitor (Vector Launch Monitor...are they even in business anymore?) had me hitting it well (or so he said). PUD'd it and off I went. I swear I hit 1, yes one, good drive with that thing over a 3-4 month period. Slice city. Now I know that is all path related mostly now but the open head and lightweight shaft sure didn't help much at the time. Finally after struggling and hitting 3 wood for the last few weeks off of the tee I convinced my AM to let me swap the FT-3 for a G5 offset. I hit that thing like a tour pro for over a year until I fell into the rabbit hole of optimization and have been chasing perfect ever since.

Runner up had to be ruining an XR Pro fairway wood by putting a DI7 in it. Someone had traded in an XR fairway with that shaft in it. Since trade-ins at our store were all base price, the shaft upgrade didn't matter. It sat there for a week and nobody bought it so I asked my now-different GM if I could take the DI7 and take my stock shaft out and just swap. He was fine with it. Now let me just say that this XR fairway wood was money for me, I hit it sooooo well, but the Ho in me couldn't pass up the deal and the star power of the orange. Hook, slice, fat, hook, etc. I couldn't time this thing at all, so in a rage I snapped it over my knee one day and chucked it in the bag. I promptly got back to the store after the round and reshafted it back to the old shaft. I shed a tear a year later when the stock shaft broke and Callaway said they wouldn't replace it only upgrade it. I've been on the hunt for a magic 3 wood ever since, and if the numbers translate outside, this PXG might be the closest I've had.

Ping G410 Plus, "the most forgiving driver" was awful for me on the course. My demo day and fitting I wasn't hitting my miss, got to the course and it showed up like it normally does and the CG and forgiveness and my miss didn't line up. I get off the tee box w/ ease w/ my Mav SZ and 0811X.

913 D3 was a great driver. I finally replaced it after nearly 8 years. Every year I would try something, but they could not knock it out of the bag. Many were longer, but I trusted the 913 and could hit a variety of shots with it.

Scotty Cameron TEI3 second edition, when brother in law let me use it for a round, could not miss, after I bought it, no less than 4 three putts in each of the next 3 rounds, it went in the display den caddie with less than 6 rounds of use . It's lived there for the past 11 years.

Mitsubishi Tensei Pro Orange. My fault I bought it with an M5 last year bc of trade in credits. But lasted about 5 range sessions and 1 on course session before selling it. Felt terrible with counter balancing so went back to my old trusty Fuji Speeder at the time.

TaylorMade M4 Tour 3 wood with a Fuji Pro shaft. I think the issue was the shaft, it was the most boardy, re-bar feeling shaft I've ever tried in a club. I had NO idea where the clubhead was. I think I played maybe 8 rounds with it before selling it off.

Luckily, I kept my OG M1 3W that was the best 3W I had ever used to that point (still might be). Why did I get the M4 Tour 3W if I already had a unicorn 3W in the bag????? I listened to the knuckleheads here on WRX about how awesome they are....

Same club. Hammered some bombs with the M1 440 on the simulator. In real golf a lot of low-spin knucklers. It was Tour issue too. I’m not on Tour. Got the Ping G400 — only 5 cc bigger — and all was well.

I liked my M1 440 until I picked up a G LST. The G LST is just as long and a lot more fairways.

Even though I hit it on the sim and quite well I thought, I was always very inconsistent with the original Callaway Epic driver. I do still have it as a backup.

Cleveland Hi-Bore Driver (lefter than left, all day...awful at address and crappy sound to boot)

Cleveland Hi-bore hybrid w/ IROD shaft (a lot of the local kids that were good were always obsessed with Cleveland so I most def had to try and follow suit lol)

Titleist 975F (off the deck I just didn't have the swing or clubhead speed to get it up in the air like i thought)

Titleist 503h (probably the worst driving iron design ever, if you google pics now you'll see it looked like they drew up the designs by hand)
