Wilson Staff Tour model blade

All the little nostalgic add on’s to this set really makes them special. I would discribe the blade length as a modern MB. I think that’s reflected in the playability as well. I won’t go as far to say “forgiving” that’s a disservice to this style of iron. Having said that these aren’t even remotely as punitive as MB’s from years gone bye. BB

Reviving and old (er) thread: I was having some clubs regripped and the shop only had the fitting cart 7-iron to try. Holy smokes! I was routinely carrying my 7 iron 165-170 which is unheard of for me. I carry my 7 iron in the 919 tours about 155, so this was really surprising. The feel was soft, my pattern of mishits were not terribly punished. One of they guys working at the shop had a set in lefty and he also remarked on these irons playing a bit longer. I left the store very impressed. I'm less impressed by Wilson as a company, however. Despite their history of producing iconic irons, it doesn't seem like they're doing much to market these clubs.

Were these irons designed to be combo'd with any other irons in the Wilson line up?

Following this posting I've actually seen the Wilson blades at both the Laird and Enterprise locations, I would expect that most stores now have them on the wall.

Just did a fit with these today. They are absolutely fantastic clubs. Feel is as good as my MP20s. Pretty forgiving. A bit less spin and peak height - overall stronger flight which was nice. A few yards longer than mine. Feels very powerful but buttery at the same time. Lots of bounce and camber it seems so very little resistance through the ball. Would be happy to play up to 3i. Give these a shot if you're thinking about blades.

I could play them interchangeably which I think is a compliment to the Wilsons. Blade length and offset are similar. I think the shaping of the MP20 wedge is a bit better. Lots more camber and bounce on the Wilson but still a narrow sole. This is a positive here in Canada as we get very soft turf for at least have the season. I also play baked out links style courses in summer which require a narrow sole. If I can get a deal on a new set of the Wilson I may pick them up.

I would agree with assessments that these clubs are definitely long. I was surprised by this actually considering the style of iron. BB

For me, I think I figured out why these flew so far - they spin pretty low (like low-5000's with a 7 iron. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they would do that. The peak height and descent angles were all on target though.

Question: with irons, are you guys relying predominately on descent angle or backspin to hold the green?

That seems super low. Do you know where on the face you are hitting them? Are you hitting off a mat? It's possible the sole is allowing you to hit them what would normally be slightly heavy and they're launching higher off the face so you are getting fliers. That can happen a lot with mats.

It is super low. I have to imagine it's an artifact of being off the mats, but I'm getting about 5500 rpm with JPX 919 tour and MP-18 MB off those same mats. The difference is that they're only flying about 155. As far as I can tell, I'm middling all of these pretty consistently. Really, all these clubs are designed similarly (I think) and are trying to do the same things. There shouldn't be a huge difference between any of them as long as the lofts are consistent. On grass, different story b/c of grinds/bounce I suppose.

bumping this old thread bc I have found myself oogling at these blades on the Wilson website over the last few days - @Big Ben how would you compare these to the Cobra CBs in your signature?

ZCP684X1XKSG.jpegI enjoyed the Cobras quality set of sticks but truth the Wilsons are simply a superior iron in my opinion. They feel better, seem more forgiving and better distance for me. I have a perfect set of PXG Gen 1’s shafted with my fav Steelfiber 95’s sitting bored on the shelf because of these Wilson’s. The OCD in me just smiles at all the little touches Wilson did to honor the Staff irons of the past. Hard to beat fellas....

They are very much a buttery set of modern MB’s, extremely well balanced. I will note a bit of caution for some. I live in the Northeast where our courses tend to be overly lush and soft. The added bounce in these irons makes a huge difference. Now for you dry grass rock hard Texas Hombres might not be optimal. Never know I guess until you try.

No apologies. I never get tired of looking at them. I am surprised at the reports about how playable they are, that they are comparable to the V6 in that department.

I haven't had mine out for a real round of golf yet. I hit them off turf when I was fitted and I've played some sim golf. Anybody with a halfway repeatable swing shouldn't have issues playing these. The 5 iron is where my ball striking starts to suffer but I had mixed results with a 5 iron in my G410's I played last season so it's no big deal. I'm a hybrid lover no matter what irons I play.

Yeah, when it comes to 5 iron I am probably looking at a C300 Forged or D7 Forged. The C300 Forged would get the first test. It looks great and blends well loft-wise and it’s definitely going to give me help on off-center hits. I saw a 5-Pw set of new C300 Forged the other day for $300. That’s a great price for a quality iron

The Staff blades are a fraction larger on the face vs the V6 anyway so unlikely I would notice any difference from 7 to PW. I’ve been hitting lots of irons. Wilson is not only as good as anything out there, the profile to my eye makes it a top choice. Watching Kevin Streelman stripe those V6s to a runner-up finish at Pebble was inspiring.

I went with the C300 forged in my 3 iron and could not hit a club better when I first got it. Having some trouble with it recently but I will chalk that up to winter rust (I got the irons at the end of last season so I was still playing 4-5 days a week). I wish I had done C300 in my 4/5 instead of the V6. It blends really nicely with the blades and I see no benefit at all from the V6 from a forgiveness stand point. I've been thinking about the D7 so if you happen to try both I'd be very curious to hear what you think compared to the C300.
