I am a 16 cap, but my driver play is more like a 20+ handicapper and I got fitting into a Mavrik Sub Zero head. If you asked me before the fitting which driver I was most likely to be fit into that one would have been near the bottom of the list. This was my first time getting fit for a driver and was actually blown away by the consistency I picked up with a proper fit. I wouldn't order it without hitting it first, but in my experience SZ didn't equal lower handicap only.

Handicap wouldn't be your consideration. The SZ has a flatter lie and more wight towards the club face, creating a slight fade bias and lower spin. There are too many factors that play into the shot to determine purely based on handicap. When my driver is off, the low spin of the SZ does not allow for side spin (spin axis) to be reduced and causes some epic misses. Your handicap only tells us your potential to score, not where your score comes from (i.e bad tee shots, poor iron play, bad short game).

If you're getting fit just let it happen and let the fitter do his job.

If you're buying cold, go hit one side by side with the STD or MAX and then look at the results.

At a 20hcp I'd be looking for consistency forgiveness, and dispersion, over any other statistic your reading. Golf (and improving in golf) is much better when your 2nd shot is from the fairway.

your typical miss being a slice would cause some caution with a low spin driver. The ways to offset a slice (with a club) is spin and a closed face angle/more upright lie. The best way to offset it is with a new swing path and face angle. However, without changing your swing, the SZ makes a right miss wide right (no coincidence that is my handle.) Neither of those things are provided by a SZ. That being said, like others have stated, get fit. Other number needed would be typical spin with driver, but that can also be adjusted with a good fitting/lessons/loft. At the end of the day, if you hit a sub zero with less dispersion than other clubs and it goes the distance you desire, game it.

I recently adjusted my SZ to 10.5 degrees even though I get more spin to close the face slightly and add spin to combat my right miss.

Just because someone says they are a “club fitter” does not mean they are a good fitter, and does not mean they have a great deal of knowledge on fitting/equipment. If this was at a big box store (Dick’s, Golf Galaxy, etc) , odds are the employee doing the fitting is not a good club fitter. You should know numbers like ball speed, angle of attack in degrees, club path, carry distance, apex(peak height), angle of descent, backspin. If you came to me and said your miss was a slice, the sub zero model would be low on list of heads for you to try. With that being said I’d watch you hit some balls with gamer, look at your swing combined with monitor numbers mentioned above. I’d also explain why certain numbers are what they are, and best way to improve them with equipment. Any swing flaws is a different conversation.
