J13's WITB: Update- FUJIKURA AXIOM

Interested in the hulk shaft since it is supposed to be similar to the hzrdus T1100 which I am partial to and play. The shaft just works, sometimes that's the best way to explain it... not sure on the ventus stuff, I haven't been excited about the ventus hype for some reason. The orange is a great shaft for many. will stay tuned for updates...! What weight do you have with all these? One thing I have found is that for driver the same shaft in 70g may work better than the 60g or 80g. Yet in another shaft the 60g is best, in another shaft the 80g is best. So some guys are like yeah I have to have a driver shaft that is ~75g, I know that 75g works the best. Not sure why I added that but yeah, try all the weights you can. Enjoy.

Shafts in the testing consists of: All 45" and around D3-D4 depending on setup. The most challenging thing swing weight when testing shafts especially counter balance shafts like the Orange. Example the Orange is D1.5 and with the same head it's D5 with Project X 7a3.

Glad to share the info, testing is time consuming but fun (especially shafts). I will have an update on shafts in a few days and take it down from 5 to 3. I will say the Hulk is super anti left!

Head wise I've had extensive time with the SIM and SIM MAX on course. SIM MAX was a clear winner for me in both dispersion and distance. I'm not sure if it's the deeper face or the CG location but it's MUCH more stable. And for reference I was the same way with their other offerings, M2, M6. I also plan on testing the Maverik line this month and then comparing Maverik to SIM on course to see who the winner will be. Other heads i might test are the new Cobra Xtreme and Mizzy ST200. Intrigued by both but it will come down to how much time i have as my competitive season kicks off in April so I need to have a solid bag by then.

MORE UPDATES COMING.....

J, GD shafts never work out for you? I can’t wait to hear what you think about the Mavrik and Cobra drivers. When will we see the new irons and wedges? Another question will you be gaming the XV again this year?

In all honesty I just think other shaft companies have surpassed GD in innovation and tech. I try their new stuff but it just never "wow's" me. VR came close but it was a honeymoon phase and it literally lasted 2 rounds. Anyway I'm looking forward to trying the Maverik on course but Cobra is a maybe, just depends. I'm also probably going to add the Mizuno ST200 to the mix.

Once i'm done with this shaft test I'll switch my focus to wedges and irons. Winter here is so hit or miss so my time on course is limited. Also the ball of choice will most likely be the XV again, but i am curious about the new Cally ball coming. Hearing really good things and Triple Track has piqued my interest based on an initial test.

UPDATE on shafts coming tomorrow. I'll be on course and going to work my way down to 3 maybe 2.

It takes a special kind of guy to tame that PO. When tempo gets off, that thing can get all over the course, but can also produce drives you may never experience with another shaft.

Interested to see how this bag shapes up this Spring, enjoy the play time.

haha honestly the Orange is really consistent for me. My main objective is to hit more fairways not build the longest possible setup. So far all of the above shafts have produced the best consistency and dispersion which is why they are the final 3.

So who left the party:

Project X HULK Green 70TX - Really liked this shaft but in the end it was a little spinny for me. Don't know why but it was consistently shorter than the others in the group and less accurate for me. Loved the look though.

Project X 7A3 - This was a hail mary as I used to love the shaft. It's super tip stiff and swing weight is very heavy on it. For example in the same head the Orange was D1.5 while the 7A3 was D5. Overall its a great shaft and has a lot of feel to it in the butt and mid section. In the right setup this shaft still kicks as$.

Who's still at the party:

Ventus Blue / Limited Edition - Shaft is just stellar and the gold is great to look at.

Xphlexxx Agera - LOVE this shaft and it has been great to me over the last 3 years or so. It's just stable AF

Tensei Orange - This is obviously more counter balanced and the head has to be setup the right way for this to respond. So far i've seen some amazing consistency with this shaft. I'm not sure why but I find the center of the face a lot with this one.

PO is an interesting animal. I didn't have a ton of experience with CB shafts but now that I've gotten some testing under my belt I'm really liking the feel and consistency. I have a theory as to why that is but i'll save that for another time as I want to do more testing.

Ventus black is stout and LOW spin. Interesting enough most guys on tour play the Ventus Blue tipped 1-1.5". Still maintains lowish spin but has amazing feel to it.

Will be curious to see how you get along with the Mavrik drivers. I have a 10.5* SZ with a Kuro Kage XT 60TX. Initially I had the Rogue White 60X in it but that shaft just wasn't a good fit.

Between this combo and the gym program I've been on for the last couple months, I'm seeing sections of fairways that I've not been to in quite a while if ever.

The Mav SZ 13.5* 3+ is also a fire breathing monster, and oddly enough I get along with the Rogue White 70X that's in it perfectly fine.

Yeah i'm really interested in trying the Maverik stuff. I"m just waiting to get them in so i can do on course testing. I've hit them indoors on LM's but to be honest that data isn't worth much to me. Sound and feel is on point though. Cally did a nice job.

RE: Pro Orange

It's very unique, not because of the counter balancing so much as the combination of extreme tip stability/stiffness, softness at the handle end, and the lack of harsh feel one would normally associate with such an extremely tip stiff shaft. While the softness of the handle is ideal for the powerful player that has a smooth, droppy transition, that also serves to make the shaft rather enigmatic for players with quicker transitions. I think the softness in the handle is a reason why several big name players who had the PO in play at one time have migrated back to shafts like Kuro Kage XTS and D+ White for a bit more stability in the shaft's upper third. Just a hunch, but definitely a trend that I've noticed after the initial honeymoon phase the PO enjoyed amongst some of the Tour's biggest stars.

I agree and i have a shorter more aggressive transition/swing and it works great for me. I also think the CB helps me keep the club in front of me and less stuck. I'm actually playing it at my preferred overall weight but lighter swing weight than normal. The PO is intriguing and so far has been STELLAR for me in dispersion.

How'd you end up with one of the limited edition Gold Ventus? I actually bought one of the Happy New Years shafts off one of the Instagram winners, but if we're being honest - my heart lies with the orange Halloween editions.

@ProjectX_Mizuno - I"m going to make the final decision this week. It's taking longer than I'd like but what can you expect with it being February in Maryland. Completely at the mercy of the weather.
Irons - that's next along with woods. But irons that I like the look of this year are Titleist T100, Mizzy MP line, Honma, Srixon Zblade, and a few others.

When you start testing Mavrik, don't overlook giving the MAX head a twist. Set it on N/-1 and let it rip.

I'd liken it to driving a very high performance car with excellent traction control and all the other driving aid bells and whistles. Amazing combination of performance and user friendliness.

Funny you say that because this year I have regained about 7mph in swing speed so I'm not chasing distance i'm chasing fairways. SIM MAX, Mav MAX, and Cobra Xtreme are all on my hotlist. What i like about the Mav Max is how light it is which means I can really alter COG and bias in my shop with melt.

Love reading through this thread, thanks for all the feedback @J13. I don't know if you're also testing fairway shafts but if you are I recommend giving the Diamana Thump a try. I put it in a Callaway Epic Flash and it gives me a perfect penetrating flight with lowish spin.
Also, don't sleep on the Staff Model Blades for irons, best irons I've had in awhile.

Thank you and i'm not currently testing fwy wood shafts but appreciate the heads up. Mitsu stuff just works for me so I'll have to check them out. Typically I like to have the same shaft in driver and 3 wood as they are both tee clubs for me. 3 wood is hit off the deck maybe 1 time a round if that.

WHat are the staff model blades? Wilson? If so I already checked them out and they don't have the shape i'm looking for. For me (especially with irons) shape is half the battle.

IMO, especially with blades, irons are irons. There's no really big tech advancements in forged players irons over the last decade. Find a set you like to look down at and get fit into them.

SHAFT update: Finally got another practice/play session and have declared a winner. I'll go more in detail when I get home and on a computer. Onto to the next test
