New Golfer Club Advice

So…I’ve just started golf. I have a 3 wood, a 6 iron, a 5 hybrid, and a putter. The putter is new because I liked how it felt on the practice surface, but the other three are out of the used bin. They are measured by the shop though, and are standard length, loft, lie, and flex.

So…I can hit about one shot out of three more or less looking like golf shots—straight, nice arc, etc. Maybe not very far (say 120 for the 6 iron, 160 for the 3 wood). The other two of three are a combination of bad shots (no hooks though). I’m 50 years old so, not as spry as I used to be. Honestly, if the ball would always go these distances and straight, I would think I could already work with that.

I’m told I should get a degree upright and half an inch long when I eventually do get clubs. But what I want to know is, should I get senior flex (as is certainly what I need now) or will my swing likely get fast enough to not need that with a little work (and a few lessons).

My goal is to be competent on the course by April (which I guess if I was shooting double bogey that would be a start).

Lessons, lessons, lessons.

At your stage you don’t need to spend money on clubs. Go on ebay and buy a cheap set of ping g irons like g10/15/20. g25 are a cult and would cost you more. With set sand wedge would be great.

Marco is 100% correct. Take at least a few lessons, especially to get your grip right. Used clubs are the way to go. Many golfers buy new clubs almost every year. Their old clubs become available. I recently returned to the game after 27 years and still use my irons from 1983. No matter what type of clubs you purchase, a Sand Wedge is mandatory.

Agreed on lessons. In any technical sport, investing heavily into technique is more valuable than equipment.

Lessons should be priority #1. Used equipment works just fine... You can build a decent bag for under $500 and get everything you need. I'd suggest getting a driver simply because it's bigger.

Love the enthusiasm of a new golfer. Reminds me of when first started a couple years ago.

Similiar advice to those already given - find a used set of game improvement irons: titleist ap1, callaway x hot, regular or senior flex and start with those. Same with driver/hybrid.

If you want to splurge on something newer, feb/Mar is when new products hit the demo bays and the older demos get sold. That's how I got my first fairway wood and hybrid.

Start with hybrid or fairway wood off the tee (low tee), then work your way up to the driver.

And most of all, have fun!
