What is the windiest round of golf you've ever had?

Kiawah Ocean course - played horrible. Dead into the wind on the back 9. Had 140 into a green, flushed a 3 iron and it landed 20 yards short. My 3 usually carries around 200Pebble beach - dead into wind I was green side about 40 yards from the hole. I hit a full gap wedge (85 yard shot) that went up into the air and literally hit a wall and dropped straight out of the air. Landed in a bunker 10 yards short of the hole. Royal Dublin - Ireland- Going out wind was at my back and no rain. I was playing great, hitting bombs everywhere. Coming back in, into the wind the whole way and it started raining heavily. I gave up trying to reach any of the greens in regulation and just started hitting worm burners as far as they would roll. It was brutal. Shot 37 front, 52 back. I haven’t figured wind out yet.

That course is always windy, but the wind that day was something different. Usually on the back 9, the wind is hurting in one direction and helping in the other direction. On that particular day the wind was blowing so hard that it hurt in both directions. When the wind was behind us, it blew so hard that it knocked the ball down immediately. It was like hitting through a tunnel, it would get to a certain height and nosedive. I think we stopped keeping score on about the 5th hole.

Normally, we get only rainfall from the weakened hurricanes that track up to the Ohio Valley. Hurricane Ike didn't lose much energy going inland. Dayton International airport recorded wind gusts to 90 mph.

Lived on the Gulf Coast in the late '90's-early 2000's in Gulfport, MS. Miss the beaches and decent weather.

In the Spring of '86 I was in a am. tournament at Oak Tree National. The forecast called for 35 mph sustained and gusts to 60. I was one of the first ones out and finished but play was suspended later when nothing would stay on the green. I distinctly remember a 190 yard Par 3 where I hit Driver (along with almost everyone else) and was about a club short. As mentioned, it is a test in perseverance and mental toughness. Wind is also a great equalizer. I had a similar experience @ Karsten Creek a couple decades later but will never forget that day at OTN.

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

2008 remnants of Hurricane Ike coming through Ohio. Steady 45+ winds with gusts well over 70. Tree branches started flying around so they pulled people off the course. It was pretty amusing trying hit play in that kind of wind.

Circa 1998 I played a round at the Sheppard Air Force Base golf course in Wichita Falls, TX.

It was a sunny day in late March and the wind got up to 35 MPH + as the round advanced. Wind bent the flagsticks almost horizontal. You had to shield other players tee shots from the wind so the ball wouldn't blow off the tees. You put your club towel over your head for sun shade, as hats wouldn't stay put.

One thing I saw on several shots was what I call blowback. In shots into the wind, you had to hit the ball 20 yards past the flagstick, because as the ball fell it blew back toward you. Here's a diagram I prepared several years ago to explain it.

QFKZBSASDTCF.jpgHappy note: 500-yard par 5 with tail wind was a driver + 7i.

Recently played in steady 30 MPH and somewhere around 45 MPH gusts. Hit driver off the deck many times including tee shots as it was the only way I could keep the ball low and get decent distance lol.

I played in a lot of nasty weather over the winter including one memorable round in the sleet. But, today's round was particularly aggravating, because they decided to cut and roll the greens to about a 12. I four-putted from 12 feet from a mild side hill lie, because the first one ran off the green. You can't have greens that fast in the wind. It isn't any fun at all.

Where I live in Coastal SC wind is a normal thing and how much depends on the course location. I have played when the wind was so bad it blew the ball off a flat spot on the green while I was walking to the ball. What is fun to me in the wind is hitting my little stinger 1 iron. A couple of weeks ago in a shootout this par 3 normally a 155 yards or so up a little hill the wind was dead in our face stick bent back. My partner that hits the same distances as I do hit his 24* hybrid where we normally hit a 6 iron. I had my 24* hybrid out also. He hit it good and was short. Told me I better get more bat so I pulled the 20* hybrid. I barely got on. Told him I wished I had packed my 1 or 2 iron. But down here wind is sorta a normal thing for us

Down here we call that shot a floater. Another fun shot to hit in the wind is similar. Where you hit the wedge in your case and float it up and back hit a 8 iron off your back foot nip it about half a stick high when it hits it will hop forward and start spinning back due to the wind and back spin. But you gotta practice it or else get a nasty skull.

North Texas in March about 2 or 3 years ago after a cold front moved through the day before. Pretty sure gusts were blowing 40, and 25-30 was constant.

I hit an 8 iron 155-160. Had 100 yards in on a par 4 and hit 8iron short.

Shot 78 and felt like it was a success.

18 was a par 5, dead downwind. Hit driver that stepped off to 382 yards.

Playing in Washington on the Olympic Peninsula, we had 40+ mph winds on several occasions while playing.

Not too bad until the branches start flying off 60ft tall trees and flying 30 yards across the fairways.

That day they finally sent someone out to call us off the course. My friend and I were the only ones out there....lol

Hawaii, forgot the course name, we had wind so bad they had to shut the course down bc it was getting dangerous driving the carts. We probably had easily 40mph sustained winds with gusts up to 60mph. It was terrible. Only got through 3 holes. They gave us all rain checks, came back 2 days later and it was very quite and beautiful!

Went out for 9 earlier this year in February. Was 50* out and wind was howling a constant 30+ with gusts up around 80. Wanted to test out the Galvin Greene jacket I got. Jacket stood up to the test, golf bag would not stand up. Hell, I nearly fell over.

It was a good test of balance and ball flight. Was the only crazy golf addict on the course that day. https://www.google.com/amp/s/provincetown.wickedlocal.com/news/20200207/gusts-to-80-mph-in-truro-on-friday%3ftemplate=ampart

I live and play in Saskatchewan. We reminisce of our rounds on non windy days. Average day here is around 12 mph. Easy to learn and get used to playing in that. The tough ones are when they get up to 35-40 mph. I feel like a purist golfing here though, as golf originated in a windy climate. Needless to say, not many hybrids or high lofted woods here. You need to know how to flight your shots and hit long irons low.

I've been blessed to have played golf in many countries due to military service, I have to say my most windiest rounds have been in Hawaii especially the ones near beach areas; I played the plantation course in Kapalua, lovely and challenging course, but when it blows, it is almost unplayable, hitting hybrids into 145 yards Par3s, etc and the next course was at Turtle Bay (Palmer Course), kind of the same issue of Kapalua, the exposed holes (back 9) were just impossible, the ones that had a bit of tree protection were tricky but manageable (maybe two clubs extra), other courses I've played in wind were tough but nothing like those two...
