10 Club Bag With 5 Degree Iron Loft Gaps

Hi i am new to the forum.

I Love to carry my bag when i play, cannot explain why but to me it is when golf is most enjoyable. I am also always drawn to playing with less clubs, i think for me too many choices and a lack of decision making means i am often stood over the ball about to play a shot but i am not totally committed to. I have played the last few months with 10 clubs in my bag that are

Driver, probably my biggest strength so will always hit this off the tee when possible.

Hybrid, can be altered between 18* and 21* but prefer to play it at 19 or 20

5 iron 27* - Pw 47*

56* sand wedge

Putter

It means i have quite large gaps at the long and short hitting ends. What i am looking to go to is

Driver

20 hybrid

5 iron 25*, 6 iron 30*, 7 iron 35*, 8 iron 40*, 9 iron 45*

50* wedge & 56* wedge

Putter

Kind of going with a mix of modern lofts and old school lofts.

I should explain that 10 clubs is through trying this on a lot of rounds it is the comfortable bag weight that i want to carry around the course. I already know my yardages from time on the course and a launch monitor so i would be looking at my iron yardage gaps being at between 13 - 15 yards. I would like to know f anyone else has tried the 5 degree loft gaps, how did you get on, positives negatives etc. It makes sense in my head to have consistent gapping throughout than to have large gaps at each end.

Any comments appreciated

Why not take the yardage from your favorite club ie say 7 iron and figure out what you want your gaps to be and bend. Then the loft does not matter as long as it hits your gap number. You could also take your favorite iron and get it moi ed and set up your moi for all irons. Then you could bend loft to fit desired gaps. Would make a nice set.

Equipment geeks, like those of us on GolfWRX, sometimes forget that golf is about score not gaps, spin rates, trajectories, etc., etc. And I think most of us would shoot the same scores with fewer than 14 clubs. I know I could eliminate one of my 2 hybrids and never miss it. I’ve also toyed with the idea of dumping my 60 degree wedge and using the 56 for everything. Might better to practice with one wedge and get good at a variety of shots with it.

Anyway, why not just try the 10 clubs you just mentioned as they are. See how that works out score wise. Adjust from there if needed.

My need for fourteen clubs is based mainly on my dependence on one-trick-pony utilities.

I bag a utility driving iron and a utility sand iron, neither of which I hit from the fairway.

So even with no driver and 5º gaps at the bottom end of my set (seven degrees between 9-iron and PW), I still fill all fourteen slots in my bag.

A couple summers ago for fun, we went out with only 4 clubs including a putter (if you wanted one). I used hybrid, 5i, 8i and 56. It only cost me 4 strokes. That being said I hit a huge 145 yard flop 8i over a tree (couldn't reach with my 56) that jarred for a an eagle so that was probably worth 2 or 3 strokes right there. My avatar is the photo from that shot.

I think a 10 club bag would have minimal affect on many.

I play single length irons so may not be directly applicable, but recently bent mine to exactly those lofts (25-50 with 5* gaps).

Stock 5/6/7 lofts were already at 5* gaps (25/30/35), then switched to 4* for 8/9/PW/AW (39/43/47/51) so I bent the 8i to 40*, 9i to 45, AW to 50*, and pulled the PW.

Bending will affect the bounce, but in my case the numbers worked out fine. Stock 5-7 irons have 3*, bent 8i now has 4*, and bent 9i and AW now have 5*.

Haven't had much of a chance to play them since bending, but from what I've seen so far the gaps with the modified clubs seem to match up pretty much as expected (~12-13 yards).

So I still have the same distance range covered, but with one less club to carry, or an open spot for a different club.

I have the Pinhawk 20* 4i as well, but that loft at 7i length is right on the edge of my range for getting decent ball flight / distance, so I'm experimenting with other options - ie  the Pinhawk 4h head at same loft, and/or a lighter graphite hybrid shaft. If that doesn't work out, I have a set of F7 Cobra hybrids and a couple of driving irons to play with.

I use 5* loft gaps, but with a full 14 (https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1629172/taking-a-club-out-of-the-middle-of-the-bag). Using one less club to cover the 25* to 50* yardages makes sense for a lot of us.
