Sacramento courses

Just going to bump this up.

Going to be driving from Sacramento to Reno Apr 3 and looking to play.  I don't have any membership reciprocals and won't have a chance to bring my clubs, so I will need rentals.

Yocha Dehe is an hour in the wrong direction, so that is probably out. Catta Verdera is now fully private, so that is out. Ridge is punching their greens on Mar 30, so they are out. Too much winter to get any of the Truckee courses in. Where should I look that provide rentals-- Haggin Oaks, Turkey Creek, Ancil Hoffman?

It's nice. It's also somewhat challenging. Many, many years ago I got my pilots license there at Auburn Airport, next door. That land where the course sits was then used for the grazing of beefalo (a cross between cow and buffalo). They looked like a longhorn steer with a shaggy coat. Funny, large animals. Delicious, though. I was 20 years old. Simpler times. Now...and this is my PSA for anybody reading this thread - Knee Deep Brewing is located there between the course and the airport. They have an indoor golf facility. Yes...very nice.

Ancil is my home course. I'm a fan. So glad to hear about the simulators at Knee Deep! That's going to be fun!

My favorites publics (or semi-publics) are:

Dark Horse, Turkey Creek, Morgan Creek (semi-private), Whitney Oaks, Ancil Hoffman, Apple Mountain, Teal Bend, Ridge

Second tier (not bad for a golf fix but not where I bring the out-of-town guests): Woodcreek, Empire Ranch, HO-MacKenzie, Diamond Oaks, Mather, Wildhorse, Dry Creek

I'm not a huge fan of The Ridge. I used to work in Auburn before it was built. I would look at that land and think what a golf course it could be. I think it could have been better, so I think colors my rating. I would much rather play Dark Horse or Turkey Creek.

I agree about The Ridge. I do not play there very often, but I played there last Saturday and I wonder why i did. I have the same thought as you about what that course could have been. The 13th hole is pretty much an embarrassment to golf design. You could take away the tree on the left up by the green and both greenside bunkers and it would still be very difficult. The 4th hole isn't much better and I finally made par for the first time and felt like I won something haha.

Darkhorse has always been better and with the renovations it is fantastic. They have put beautiful sand in the bunkers, but many of the bunkers are so overfilled my feet just disappear when I walk into one haha. If they fix that the course will be perfect. They tore down the old clubhouse and it may be a while before they have a new one. Their plan was to build one where the cart barn currently is and have a back patio that will have a view of Lake of the Pines.

Have any of you guys played Rolling Hills in Corning? I see it from I-5 and always wonder if one day it'd be worthwhile to pull off and stop there. It's not really in Sacramento, but a near-enough region.

And does anyone else find Bartley Cavanaugh surprisingly fun to play? I know it's short and by the freeway, but I've had a blast every time I've been there.

My dad Iives in Corning and I’ve played there numerous times when visiting. I would say it’s definitely worth stopping and playing it at least once. It’s normally well maintained with good practice facilities. I always enjoy it. Just don’t play if the winds blowing. It can really blow.

Played Haggin Oaks-McKenzie 4 times over the last 3 weeks and had a chance to get out to Ancil Hoffman this weekend. Really liked the layout/diversity of AH and will head back soon while courses are still closed in Bay Area. Was referred to Darkhorse by my playing partners and plan to get out there soon as well
