Good 54*-56* Wedge for a Sweeper

Looking for suggestions on a sand wedge (54-56) that would be used for full shots, mostly from tight lies. I am a sweeper of the ball, so I'm aware of the role bounce plays in the selection. However, I'm looking for a brand/model that you may have found similar success with. Thank you.

Anything with 8-10 degree of bounce and if you open the face at all for chipping or bunker shots, some back edge and heel relief. Plenty of archived threads for you to look up and read about this topic.

Thanks for your response. I'm looking at some past threads and most seem to be centered around sand or around-the-green shots. I have a lob wedge that is good for me in sand and higher grass around the green, I just want to fill a gap in my game for 75-100% shots from fairways or second cut.

Same club could be used but you might want to favor something with a touch more camber then to help guard against fat contact and help get you out of the turf a bit better.

I am a sweeper and a low bounce player. I play Vokey 54 with 10* of bounce (as my highest bounce). You may want to go with 8* of bounce if you use your Lob wedge in the sand.

I’m the same. M grind vokey - 8 deg bounce, heel and toe relief. Works great.

When I play off zoysia, my divot from irons or wedges clips off down to soil for divot about size of a quarter. I guess I'm a firm sweeper (??)

My current SW is a Callaway MD3 wide-sole 54*/12. Also, I have added a MD4 58*/8 C-grind.

The MD4 model has C-grind SWs in both 54*/8 and 56*/8. The new MD5 Jaws offer the same.

Even as a firm sweeper, I have succeeded with fairly high bounce SWs in the past. I have moved to engaging the bounce rather than the leading edge on partial wedge shots.

To engage the bounce:

With slight forward lean, skim the sole along the turf. If you pick the ball clean, it will carry more but check up when it hits. If you hit it a little fat, the ball will carry less but roll out more. ETB champions suggest you get a better margin of error than with a leading-edge attack.

Vokey S grind. Leading edge sits very close to the ground despite having 10 bounce. VERY versatile wedge. Playing 54 bent one flat and one weak now.

Vokey SM8, T-20s are place to start OP. Titleist has a page in the wedge section to help with picking out the right grind/bounce.

Sweeper here and never got along with the Vokey M grind. Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth 54 SS worked well for me last year and playing with Cleveland CBX2 54 this year which has a S grind seems to fit pretty well also.

I found a Scratch 56 PDG grind with 8* bounce that's fantastic. Find these really reasonable in price too. Still after a season I'm not comfortable with 3 wedges. Played about 23 years getting along with 2 fine.

A 53* PDG grind would be awesome to find.

Ping Glide Forged is a great option. None have more than 10* of bounce and they open up nicely.

If money isn't an option hit up Mr. Joe Kwok. My go-to was from before the groove ban and couldn't find one with the same grind or feel. Looking for years for another wedge that I could play full shots with and still had the versatility for everything around the green besides bunkers. Let him know what you want... I ended up with a 54 degree beauty that feels amazing. No doubt best money I've spent on my game since my Pro Platinum Newport 2 almost 20 years ago.

Cannot agree with this anymore - I'm a sweeper of the golf ball and LOVE my S grind - I use it for full shots, half shots, around the greens, out of the bunkers in the winter. In the summer I throw a 58.12 K grind into the bag and use exclusively out of the bunkers, but the 54.10S sees about 90% of my wedge work.

Vokey SM7 54* S Grind, 10* bounce. I think you'll be extremely happy with that. I'm a sweeper as well, that wedge is my absolute favorite I've ever had. It's a do everything wedge, but where I absolutely love it is full shots.

I echo a LOT of the sentiments above. I'm a huge fan of the Vokey M grind since the SM6s (54* and 58*). Played Clevelands and Mizunos prior due to low bounce options.

That said, trying out an 54* SM7 S grind and, so far, so good. Still play my SM7 58* in a slate blue M grind though. I open wedges a lot.

Vokey S (Steve Stricker) Grind.

This grind was designed with his input for him. He’s known to be a shallow swinger especially with chips (no wrist hinge like Jason Day).

I play PMs, which are fine for full shots, but the MD3 S grind is/was better. The Vokey M is definitely what you do not want, go S in the Vokeys as well. S grinds lack greenside versatility and I would never choose one for the sand, but that's what you're asking for.

I think any sole design that has narrower sole, whether its rounded off heel and toe like M grind (or other manufacturer's equiv like C Grind Cally) should work well with sweeper turf interaction.

S grind tends to be more versatile around the green, but for fuller shots, it might not work as well as previous grinds.

I found that too narrow sole or less bounce tends to work little less predictably in the wet conditions, but then again, what IS predictable in the wet.

You might want to get a 54 or 58 degree wedge with your sole design of choice, and bend it to 56 to either add or subtract some bounce to see if it works a bit better as well.

56 degree however comes in pretty much all grinds, so having one match your bounce preference shouldnt be too difficult.

Given your main uses are for full shots and pitches, and you have a 61* should you need it, why don’t you go for a Callaway MD5 W-grind. Not only will this work perfectly for every shot you want, it’ll also give a little more forgiveness when it’s not summer, furthermore it’ll also give you another option to the Trusty Rusty out of the sand, it’ll work better in soft sand than the Cobra (I had one).
