2020 - Tournament golf ball

Well to start a new thread in a new year based on @wildcatden previous posts, what ball are you currently using and what do you plan to test or try before upcoming tournament seasons pick up. Current Ball : AVX old modelPlan to Test/Testing: Bridgestone series. Bought a sleeve of all 4. Love the spin around the greens. The distance is good as well didn't test to see if it was longer off the tee or not yet but very promising ball. Will also put the prov1 in the mix as well.
What is everyone else plan on trying this season? I should also add how does everyone test balls, just on course play or do you get on a trackman as well.

I am seeing quality issues with Taylormade balls. Not sure if it was a bad batch I got but there are quite a few dimple imperfection. They also were off balanced a lot when testing them in the salt water test. So trying out a new ball for 2020 but don’t have a favorite yet. Leaning toward Bridgestone and prov 1 balls though

There is extra plastic in the dimples and some are not formed correctly. Most balls have pretty uniform dimples .

To me this looks more of a QA issue then a bad design.

from what I can tell prov1 balls are very very uniform and seem held to a higher standard. Bridgestone also seems to good but a few balls will still fail a salt water test for balance.

TM has a quality issue with there balls doing a salt water test with taylormade TPX balls are about 40-50% of the balls in a dozen are out balance by a wide margin.

Actually I found a lot pro’s do this test I believe Ben Hogan did it and I know that Bryson DeChambeau does as well. There are no doubt very unbalanced balls out there being sold in boxes. You can’t assume that a brand new ball is indeed a good ball just by looking at it.

The big takeaway I got when I did the test is Prov1 balls are usually pretty Uniform. Other balls were not that I tested. If you buy a dozen balls and 1/2 them are inferior and you miss 2-3 putts a round or miss a fairway it is a big deal.

if you don’t believe me do the test mark the ball and see what side the ball lands pretty sure the heavy side will always be down when the ball lands.

we actually tested balls recently and based on results I seen first hand we will never not test balls before we put them in use again.

using a guy like DeChambeau as your example isn't a good source, he is quite off in the way he looks and plays. Good but off in his approach. If you think missing putts is based on a ball I'm not buying what you are selling. Read the putt better, make a better stroke at it, its not the balls fault. Are you serious right now with this? Its marking fluff to sell a device ie check n go. I can't believe what I'm actually reading. This has to be a joke to troll us right?

Why would TM sponsor AJGA and give away their balls at the events of they're inferior? Wouldn't these elite juniors be able to tell?

Challenge for Tiger... Find an unbalanced ball from your salt water test, cut it in half and post a picture here.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

That’s okay you guys can go ahead and putt with unbalanced balls. There is a lot more to it then just the test and a lot people do it.

Even if you don’t believe it helps. This is still a cheap quality control test On a ball. Like I said Titleist are pretty good and maybe even good enough testing is not needed on them. Taylormade isn’t even the worst out there. Go test a chrome soft those are complete garbage balls.

What I love about this forum is so many people say things but never test anything. A little salt in a cup and few balls would shock a lot people.

cutting a ball in half is useless you not going to test how ball is balance that that way. Either a centrifuge or salt water is needed for that.

From a pure physics standpoint tiger is correct. But the difference between a perfectly balanced ball and a lopsided one among the premium balls these days is not a lot. It only matters for putting, and it takes very fast and true greens along with a very consistent stroke to really notice a difference.

Most juniors would probably benefit more from just practicing their stroke than focusing on this level of detail. For better players looking to gain even a tiny bit of edge, measuring the balance of the ball should result in truer roll.

Since the mental aspect of putting is important, an underrated consideration is the added confidence one might gain from playing with only perfectly balanced balls that have been tested.

9 Boy:

TP5 or Prov1x. Been playing both , will pick a horse in next few weeks (once we get a warmer day and can really gauge distance better). Using the golf spy test charts, these seem to be best fit for him- great combo of great distance, high(ish) launch, and spin. Can’t pull it now, but digging in it was interesting to see how the TP5 was closer to the Prov1x in multiple catrgories , whereas you think the TP5/ProV1 and X models would more closely mirror each other.

So let me ask this do you think the ball should be cleaned every time you putt? I assume you don’t care if the ball has mud or dirt on it. Heck you probably don’t even think wind effects a putt. (It certainly does by the way)

This is only important if your looking to eliminate as many variables as you can. If your a crappy putter Then I agree it makes no difference but then again might as well buy any ball out there as well.

with a 10 foot putt it can easily be 2 inches difference in break. To get 2 inches closer to the hole is a big deal to a good putter. Like I said probably not Important for a kid who is 3 feet away but the better players all care.

The difference in a minor off balance of a ball and cleaning mud off is apples and oranges. I am going to cut through the bull here, you are looking for excuses. I can guarantee you that the vast majority of "off-balance" balls you are whining about are off balance to such a small degree that it will have essentially no effect on putts much less shots. Also, finding a supposedly "perfectly balanced" ball is a fallacy of physics as it cannot be done. Take those awful balls down to the course, mix them in with your supposedly balanced balls, and test out putting. Guarantee you can't identify the supposedly off balance ones. You can try to eliminate variables all you want but you are straight manufacturing this variable Tiger.
