How many putts should you average

Not necessarily perfect putting but you need to be a chipping/putting maestro to 100% scramble hitting 0 greens.

You dont have to be a lights out putter, you just need to give yourself a chance at making the putts. Get your chips inside 50%+ distance length and when you hit the greens your first putt outta leave you inside 3 feet.

That's why I cringe whenever I hear people talk about how to get better at golf when they aren't breaking 90/100 is spending hours on the putting green. Unless you can't afford to hit balls on the range(why are you even playing golf at this point), you'll get miles worth of improvement working on the rest of the bag more than you can save a stroke or two putting.

Not butt hurt, just responding to something silly with something even more silly

"If you three putt you suck, practice more" is a completely useless bit of "advice" without further context. If you 3 putt from inside 20 feet on a semi normal basis, yes you suck. If you three putt from 50 feet it's not the end of the world and all the lag putting practice in the world MIGHT save you 1 shot a round. Working on not leaving yourself 50 footers in general would be more productive than spending a lot of time working on lag putting. Lot's of golfers don't get better because they have unrealistic goals/expectations and thus spend too much time on the wrong areas .

You can look up 'stats per handicap' to compare your GIRs with the sample population but 31 putts is about average for a 10 h/c and while I can't take issue with the observation that developing any other aspect of your game will improve scores faster than working on average putting, there are benefits to being exceptional in any phase of the game.

Wow bro personally going after me cause I said if anyone 3 putts they sucked.... apparently 3 putts are the least of your worries. If your gonna go after anyone at least make it funny... so 3 putting and not funny maybe you could start a new thread asking how to fix both

Can't figure how to like my own posts

lol no one is "going after you personally", get over yourself man. Someone can have a different opinion without it having anything to do with you personally. 3-putt avoidance is obviously important, but there are certain cases where a 3-putt isn't really a bad outcome or a true indicator of your putting skill. Having unrealistic expectations can be a detriment to many golfers. What's worse, 3-putting from 50 feet or not getting up and down from 15 ft 1-yard off the green?

BUT you said I suck.... When I stated my golf opinion you're the one who got personal and when I call you out you tell me to get over myself....bro you need to get over yourself and stop getting butt hurt when golf opinions differ form yours.... its just golf bro.... try some decaf

lol you are the only on going off the rails, broseph, try some woosaa or something. Call me out? Telling me I need decaf? lol ok bro montana, let me get right on that.

And yes it's just golf, but most folks in here are trying to get better. There are lots of little isms that don't help anyone achieve that, especially when many of those isms are not supported by all of the data now available to everyone. Now do you want to have an objective debate or continue to think this is something personal I have against you?

I'll agree with @Krt22 in that 3-putts are unavoidable at times, and not always indicative of a poor putter. Statistics will show that even the best putters will have a few 3-putts, usually from great distances. On my home course we have a few severely contoured greens, if you're in the wrong spot it can be extremely difficult to avoid 3 putts. So to say that "You suck if you 3-putt" is patently wrong. This is one of the real positives of Strokes Gained, it helps to evaluate your putting while taking into consideration the distance you're putting from. Total putts, putter per GIR, total 3-putts, each of these ignores the distance of your first putt.

And sometimes your just out of position on the green or it's clown position day. My best round ever which occurred last year, -3 for 18, included a 4 putt double bogey on a par 3. Very long first.putt uphill and the flag was just barely over a ridge that if you missed with speed was off the green. Came up 6 feet short as I was tentative, barely missed #2 and it went 4 ft by and missed that comebacker. Birdied two of the last 3 holes to recover. I was on fire putting except for that one hole...

29 to 32. Every single person on this forum is capable of getting to 32 putts per round. Every one. Get there first, and then go lower.

Short game plays a large part, though, for sure. The better your short game, the more you should be at around 30 or a touch below.

Good stuff. How'd you recover to birdie 2 of the last 3? The reason I ask is I see more guys now than ever who self-deprecate after such an experience and can't recover.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Just shrugged it off as a rediculous pin position.

Think I missed the birdie on 16, made a 6 footer on 17 and had a glorified tap in after a chip on the par 5 18. I had 7 birdies total for the round so the 4 putt didn't bother me that much.
