Do you use iron head covers?

Recommended Posts

i use them and have a set of Mizuno MP 67’s that I bought around 2007 and they look almost brand new. I will post some pics at one point. If I didn’t give my set of Mp-30’s a couple of years ago, I’d take a picture of how beat they were from 2-3 years of play.

I clean my irons after every shot with a brush, towel them dry, then the neoprene hardcover goes on, and into the bag they go!

A lot of these forged irons are works of art, I’d hate to see their beautiful visage sullied by careless handling. Having beaten looked irons is like looking at a Rembrandt on a crumbled up piece of paper that was printed off from a cheap home printer!

My 2 cents anyways ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have the personality traits that would use them but I just cannot. They are cumbersome and have a stigma attached. My old forged set has a lot of chatter and it does not bother me but I do wish it was not there. I have a brand new set of Apex Pro's now and they are on display in all they're naked glory.

Do a search on the site. Lots of threads, all full of disagreements and discussion. To each his own. If you can use iron head covers and not slow down the game, then I really don't care. Some people like to keep their forged irons clean of bag chatter, others don't. It's not a skill thing or a handicap indicator.

I have 14 full sets of clubs (bags, woods, irons, wedges and all) and all the forged irons have Castle Bay covers. Neoprene has a habit of getting wet and sticking to the face and causing premature rusting. I know it makes me look like a tool, but I don't care. I like my golf clubs looking as nice as possible.

Ultimately comes down to personal preference I put them on my forged irons because I paid good money and want to keep them looking good as long as possible. As noted if you do get them make sure to be efficient with them so you don’t hold up the group

Curious with regard to as how 'slows down the game'? For those who are concerned with pace of play, what's your average or expected pace for 18 holes?

I'm still trying to understand why this question comes up about every six months...

Here's the run down from what I remember-

If you want to use them, use them. If you don't, then don't.

If anyone thinks this or that about you using iron covers, that's on them not you.

Some people will try to stereo others based on something. Iron covers are no different.

Those who want to do use them. (some just like to use them, some use them to avoid the clanging noise, some use them to prevent chatter)

Those who do not want to, don't use them (some people even like the noise of clanging clubs and the look of chatter all over their irons)

Slow players play slow... fast players play fast.. iron covers are not a significant factor.

Did I miss anything?

Not really. I use auto car washes (good ones) and prefer individual scratches, because I usually will recall the shot I dinged a club with...sometimes they're really good.

ive always brushed them after hitting each shot, toweled them dry, then put back in the bag. Once I get home, I clean them more thoroughly.

Forged irons are a work of art to me, not using headcovers and sullying their beautiful visage is sacrilege (exaggeration)

I'll use them when the clubs go in the car, or if I'm flying. All the time. If I'm in a golf cart, I leave every other cover on, or I just wrap a towel around the iron heads to keep them from banging together. If I'm walking, then no. I'd most likely end up losing at least two per round if I did that.

Golf carts are the real enemy here. I'll play with guys who insist on driving 100% of the time, and I'll walk whenever possible. I can hear them dinging up their clubs on every single hole, which drives me crazy. These are also the kinds of guys to put three woods and their putter in the same compartment and take the head covers off everything before they get to the first tee.

My skin is crawling just thinking about it.

I put them on for traveling to/from the course. Each time I pull an iron for the first time (whether warming up or during the round), I just stuff the headcover in my bag and the leave that iron uncovered for the rest of the round. Then at the end, I wipe my clubs down and put all the covers on before putting them back in the car.

I use the spongy squishy ones from Castle Bay (I think), not the hard shell ones. I would take the cover off before the shot and put it into my pocket, hit the shot, then wipe the club with a damp towel, then put club into bag without cover. When it's time to hit the next shot, the clubhead of the previous club used would be dry and then I would put its' headcover back on. Then pull the next club for the next shot and repeat. I have never had a problem with rust and helps keep the clubs looking like new.

Yes, but I only need two iron covers how I have my clubs situated in my bag. To avoid them clanking on one another when walking with push cart! Cannot stand that sound of someone walking and carrying....clank....clank....clank off and on for 3+ hours......nooooooooooooo?

And no, chatter is not cool, it looks terrible?

I would never use iron headcovers. But I would never wear a fanny pack, or clip a cell phone to my waist either. I also wouldn’t wear socks with sandals or drive a Prius.
