Car hire or rental for a week ??

First time to The Home of Golf and looking for advice on renting a car or hiring a driver:

Golf trip booked for April, 2020 with the following courses:

Saturday: Elie

Sunday: Carnoustie

Monday: Jubilee

Tuesday: Old

Wed: Off

Thursday: N. Berwick

Fri: Off

 

Hoping for the ballot to work out and get TOC or New on either Wed or Friday.

Assuming you're a North American - do you get car hires when you go on trips in North America?

If yes, do it in Scotland. Folks get their knickers in a twist over the other side of the road thing, be conscientious and aware, as you should driving anywhere and you'll be grand.

Driving is much better...especially since there is plenty of other things to do and see.

Another vote for renting your own car (called car hire there). Research appropriately, make sure that the required insurance is in place, get an automatic transmission if you don't drive a manual normally. I've had very good experiences renting through Celtic Legend Car Hire Car Rental

And make sure you get navigation! Voice navigation on roundabouts is a big plus at some locations. Also easy to get turned around driving about Fife - but then again if you miss a turn pretty soon you’ll see a sign for the same town and if you miss that turn another sign for the same town later - roads aren’t laid out in Midwest squares, lol.

The folks I mentioned, Celtic Legend Car Hire, are brokers for Arnold Clark. I don't know how, but their prices are lower than I could get directly from Arnold Clark. But that said, dealing with Arnold Clark was just fine. Their facilities at both Edinburgh and Glasgow are a little way off-airport, but its just a short shuttle ride. The cars were good, the service was normal, no big sales job to upgrade stuff. All in all, a very solid experience, on 2 different occasions.

We used Sixt in '18 and Arnold Clark last summer. Experiences were great with both. Sixt was at the airport in Edinburgh where we flew in and out from. The cheaper rental and what we wanted was a bit off site when we flew in and out of Glasgow last summer - shuttle to Arnold Clark Paisley which took no time at all. Kind of liked the off-site thing in retrospect - a lot less hectic than when we were at the airport the year before. No wait, and we were the only folks picking up and dropping off at the times we did. Nice calm way to get started.
