Hooking the TM M2 Irons

Picked up a set of these on the cheap because my son liked hitting them at our local fitter last year. Pulling them out of the box I noticed substantial offset. First session with them he was hitting draw - almost hooks quite a bit. When straight they're rocket launchers, for sure. Anybody else mess with these and does the offset contribute to the hook, typically? He plays with a weak grip, IMO. Thanks. Happy Friday...

No offense but Ping Eye 2s and 845s got way more offset than the M2s and they did ok on the big tours.

Funny you should mention that...an old friend of the family is giving me his old Ping Eye 2 iron set. Arriving soon. Looking forward to seeing them. And, no offense, but I'm perplexed by your answer. This isn't about big tours. I need to be clearer...All other things being equal, does increased offset lend itself to hooks and draws? If so, what adjustments can/should be attempted? I don't know because I'm a buy-a-nice-iron-set-and-play-them-forever guy.

It's not the clubs, it's your son. Maybe he should stop flipping the M2s at impact.

It's more likely the longer length and upright lie angle than offset. Offset shouldn't really contribute to the ball drawing, it's main purpose is to help move the CG back relative to the shaft center line. This helps raise launch and possibly increases forgiveness a bit.

I would see what your face to path is and also your dynamic lie. Hook is not the same as small pulls that draw. Hook says face to path is very shut... Not a club head issue. Seeing the toe up 3* at impact that result in a pull that keeps drawing while face is closer to path says club too upright.

Some people are uncomfortable with irons that have a fair amount of offset and the thought of hooking or going left can play in their mind. Maybe your son is coming from irons with very little offset and he just needs to get used to the M2's. Having said that, I never thought the M2's had excessive offset, certainly less than what you would see with Ping G series irons.

Get the lie angles checked and adjusted appropriate for your son's swing

I have gamed irons with tons of offset (845s) and I gamed irons with very little (like my current '99 Apex blades) and for me, I think offset puts your hands a little more forward on the ball at impact for to promote a more downward blow, nothing to do with direction. Tom Wishon says otherwise but that's me.

Offset is to help get the ball in the air, not to draw the ball. Just as others have said, check lie angles and maybe the shaft is too light/flexible?! Another reason to always get fit!!

You know it's interesting this topic comes up sometimes.... I find shafts which are too soft to sometimes do the opposite, and actually are prone to fading more because they will droop more going into Impact which lowers dynamic lie. I often hook shafts which are too stiff and cut with shafts too soft. Weight is also the opposite, too light... Pull, too heavy, push.

Some ppl react the opposite though, so it all depends on the player. If these are stock M2 then they have pretty light and pretty soft shafts for most better players.

I think these irons are designed to mitigate a fade in that the lie angles are upright, the club length is slightly longer, weight is placed toward the heel of the club head to help it shut, and the shafts have quite a bit of torque. I don’t think offset if the primary reason for the hooks but you should probably find another iron set as you / he will be fighting these irons to stave off hooks. I’ve been there and it’s not fun. I would not recommend monkeying with an otherwise solid swing to compensate for irons that are designed to promote a draw for high handicappers.

Keep an eye on the face of the M2 irons. Many instances of the face collapsing.
