Wilson D7 driver

Double Gee

Recommended Posts

After all the bs on here about the cost of the Cortex, it turns out Wilson knew what they were doing as the new Driver D7 comes in at £239...about £150 under the Cortex.

First reviews I've seen it looks fantastic and has top, top performance. Although it's not adjustable, it's apparently a beast.

Definitely one I'll be trying.

Seen a couple of reviews on it and it does look like a great driver. In so far as adjustability, my cynical side kicks in here, it benefits the manufacturer in that they don't have to produce as many lofts of the same driver and helps from a fitting perspective to get someone dialed in. If one is fitted properly, the settings shouldn't then change or the fitting becomes invalid. Therefore, I don't have issue with a fixed driver. Also saves weight since there is a weight bogey with the adjustable driver hosels.

Not against adjustable drivers but a good fixed loft driver can be great too

Our small group of mates who play at the weekend number 12.

Out of 12, 3 have fixed head drivers and the 9 adjustables only one had it moved from the standard setting the club arrived in.

I'm sure there's a vast number of tinkerers who play, but the majority just leave it alone and in truth, an adjustable driver is not needed.

Anyone gaming it? It seems to tick many of my boxes (light, looks, sound and feel) and without a chance to demo, I ordered one brand new for USD 230 equivalent. Should be well worth an Experiment.

I still have yet to own an adjustable club of any kind and I don't feel like I a missing out on anything. The only advantage I have ever seen is the ability to swap out shafts - but I don't do that either, so totally a moot point.

I used to love the TM/DSG commercials that showed people coming in to have the "pros at Dicks" adjust their drivers for them. Such a gimmick.

Meanwhile I'm gaming the D7 and it's the best driver I've ever had. Longest (lightweight suits me) and very consistent. Love it! Give it a try.

I ordered one with an Even Flow Blue but at 45". I didn't swing weight it when I got it but that's entirely too light at that length for that head. As a result I was spraying it all over the yard. I then added lead tape till I got it to a balance point same as with another 45" driver I have that I hit well and that improved things tremendously based on a range session I had with it shortly thereafter. Looks wise its a winner and I'm looking forward to taking it onto the course.

Swingweight is important in every club. For some reason W/S has stuck with the very lightweight driver concept longer than others (well maybe Cleveland now with that new Launcher), combining very lightweight heads w/lightweight shafts. That club, with the stock Helium shaft at 45 3/4" swingweights at only D2. Like I said I didn't swingweight mine at 45" when I got it but I suspect it was somewhere around C4 or C5 by the way it felt and as a result I couldn't feel the head when I was swinging it. Adding the tape solved that and I was pretty happy with the dispersion and trajectory I was seeing in it after that.

The D7 is a great driver but I believe it's geared towards us older golfers who are looking to pick up a little speed .

I'm guessing maybe mid 60's and up. All depends what kind of shape you're in and if you can still get your clubhead speed up there in the mid 90's. I'm 67 and I think the D7 might work well for me with my swing speed being between 86-92.

Well I still run 4 miles daily and watch what I eat. I hope to stay healty and flexible enough well in to my 60's to be able to maintain some speed and play the game at a decent level.

The overall weight and the swingweight are not the same thing. It being D2 is not a lignt swingweignt at all. The headweignt is only 5 grams or so less than many other drivers. Remember, no adjustable hosel adding weight here.

if is possible to build a lighter setup like the D7 and have it swingweight at D2 as ir does and it’s possible to use heavier components and create a C9 or D0 or whatever swingweight because that measurement is the relative balance of the club not the overall weight.

The D7 is not radically lighter than other drivers. if someone really wants to build a heavier D7, just add hotmelt to the head and use a heavier shaft and grip. You’re probably talking no more than 15-20 grams total difference.

Even easier to raise the swingweight to D4 with a few strips of lead tape on the driver head.

One thing for sure, the D7 sounds better than a lot of drivers. The kevlar woven into the crown definitely helps. I don’t think the D7 is just for older golfers. A lot of players would benefit.

I'm not an uber technical player having to know exactly what the swingweight is, but I do need the swingweight to be heavy enough so I can know where the head is. I'm like a lot of players that need heavier shafts and swing weights to be able to feel and control the club effectively. I tried an experiment with KBS Tour 105's in a set of irons and it was a disaster. I like the idea of lighter clubs and swingweights to increase speed but in practice it never works out for me. For this club I did add the lead tape till I got it to a point where when I swung it it felt very much like another 45" driver I have that I hit well and don't know the exact swingweight of that club either. Adding hotmelt would be a bit more of a task wth the D7 since there is no weight port or hotmelt port on the club meaning it would have to be added through the hosel. Anyway after that I was very please with how I was hitting it. I agree it is a very good sounding club. Looks great at address sitting square to perhaps just very slightly open at address.

I agree. The thing on going to lower overall weight is it does take time to adjust. I generally find it easier to hit heavier shafts too, but I also am used to them. Often a lighter shaft throws off feel at first. When I played a few rounds with the D7 and some irons with graphite shafts, it was bad at first but came around quickly, and it was easier to hit shots with less effort. Instead of it speeding up my tempo, it did the opposite — slowed my tempo and increased my ballspeed!

Swingweight can help the transition by restoring that familiar balance, even if the build is lighter. My tempo is really a little smoother if its not too heavy and D2 is about as heavy a swingweight as I like. In fact, a counterbalanced C8-D0 works well for me (Like Jack! ?).

In this club I actually feel like the head is fine but the Helium shaft is lighter than my usual 68-72g driver shafts.

Only negative I’ve heard on the Cortex is the sound of it. It performs well.

Was hitting the D7 very well last night, the best of three drivers I hit (vs Mizuno and Ping). The D7 continues to impress. it looks so good at address to me that’s likely one reason I hit it well. The shape is appealing.

Yes. I can swing it faster, or shall I say it is easier to swing fast? Including two pics. I hit six drives with it, caught one off the heel, but otherwise pretty much middle. I can’t say if I will keep the light shaft but I decided to give it a little time. I have really been working on shallowing the club and the shaft responds well. The D7 shape looks real nice to me.

I need to update my sig. Sold the G400 and the tryout for 2020 is down to the Wilson D7 vs the Mizuno ST180 (the blue one that is a low-spin beast). But I’m not deciding via launch monitor, playing full rounds with each one. I picked this driver up for $199 new and I’ll be happy either way
