How much does your ball draw?

BigTexan

Recommended Posts

Around 6 months ago, I changed to a strong grip and started working on playing a draw. I’ve been playing for around 25 years, but had a lay-off for several years due to raising kiddos. When I got back into playing, I was over the top and everything had a fade ballflight. This was alright, but the wind would destroy any distance that I got. Since I changed my swing, it got me pumped to practice much more and truly excited again. My question is how much does your ball draw? With my long irons, it may move 20 yards. My short irons move around 10 yards right to left. I’m wondering if that is normal or I’m actually playing a controlled hook. Oddly enough, I can’t hardly get my driver to move much at all. Thank y’all

20yds is a massive draw. 10yds with short irons is also a massive draw. You play a massive draw

I aint' hating on you though player , because i do too. The only thing is it can be a problem on some courses though for you hitting driver straight is a blessing. Like if you have treeline down the right and the tee box is jammed down the right side of the box. You pretty much wouldn't be able to get one in play.

This was my biggest issue, i have been working all winter on hitting a straight ball with driver and 3 wood

Try to play it for a couple rounds. First time I broke 90 I told myself just play the hook. I'd guess it was about a 20% hook, 150 yard shot would hook 30.

For a stock shot, it's probably too much. But a good skill to remember.

Currently I try to play a 5% fade. But knowing I can hook the crap out of it helps every once and a while. There are days where I end up playing about a 10% hook. I went through a short stretch last year where all I could do was hit a massive hook off the tee, short clubs would fade. People in my group would laugh at me, I'm talking 60 yard hook with driver that would still find the fairway.

As long as you can recognize your tendency for the day, assuming you can't correct it, you will play the best you can for the day.

Nothing wrong with playing a big draw if you can control it. Anything larger than 5 yards is excessive for me. My natural ball flight is a draw and I'm currently battling it at the moment. I'm trying to get back to playing a small fade, especially with the longer clubs. As a person who struggles with the overdraw from time to time, a baby fade is a sight for sore eyes. It's going to sound clique but being able to aim left-middle and rip driver and know it's not going to go left is a liberating experience.

I can draw an Eye2 30 yards....seems the more offset a club has the more I tend to draw it.

One of the best players at my course plays a big slinging draw/hook. He made it to Bandon Dunes s few years ago for the PubLinks championship. His ball doesn't know what going right means. He might hit a fade on accident once or twice a year.

My draw is a bit of tamer and is closer to straight than true draw.

Often times the big slinging hook/draw is a function of ball position. If you keep the ball in the middle/back of your stance you increase the right-to-left on account of an in-to-out path. So moving the ball forward might be a good adjustment if you want to use the same sort of swing shape, or you can work on making a fuller turn in the back-swing combined with keeping your head back as you come through so it translates into a more high-trajectory draw as opposed to a mid-trajectory hook.

In general, I'd say you're on the right path though. Better to hit a solid, well-compressed ball that draws a bit too much than a weak, wipe-fade / cut.

Ok, that is opposite of what I’m seeing. When I play it too far back, I hit it right with no draw. When I have it too far forward, I tend to hook. Too far back and I feel stuck, and too far forward feels like I’m reaching to hit the ball.

I do agree that the strike feels much more solid than when I was hitting a fade.

I play a big draw. Take a look at the shot tracker on a par 3 on the pga tour, where they overall all the lines from that days shot, and I'm somewhere around the 10 biggest right to left curvatures. If it works for those 10 guys, it works for me. My biggest issue is actually trees on the right side of par 3's, I hit the ball pretty high with driver so often I can hit it over things on the right hand corner of a hole if needed. I can also manufacture something straighter with a driver or 3 wood, I can't for the life of me get an iron to turn right.

Interesting topic as my buddy and I talk extensively about this. We both shape the ball both ways and to varying degrees. I think the purpose in shaping the ball is to create a larger miss area. A big draw with driver on a dog leg left creates a much larger miss area than a fade on the same hole. Neither of us have what we want to call a stock shot. I have no issue drawing the ball 20 yards if the hole calls for it. You can open up HUGE miss areas on green by shaping the ball. We have a par 3 at our home course that if you play a fade to a tucked right pin, you can hit the green in a 10yd wide area and end up within 10' of the hole. Play a draw and you need to hit it within 10'.

The only other thing I will add is that if you play really firm greens, the big draw is near impossible to stop. I don't focus on all 9 shots but I have the big draw, small draw, fade, low stinger and high shot.
