Winter tinkering - How's your kid"s Driver Swing Speed?

Can I like this 10 times? Son has always been smaller and out driven. He has put on Bryson weight over the winter and been in the gym everyday.

His forearms are bigger than mine.

Until now. His short game has saved his butt. Now a solid short game and putting it out there 275. Should get better results.

I had my kid start fitness training as soon as he turned 7. He wasn’t able to do one single push up before, but now (3.5 months later) he can do 3 sets of 8 properly. I’m seeing a few yards more on drivers, but that might just be from growth and/or better technique.

Our group of kids do chipping games. Loser has to do 20 pushups, next place 10 then 5. Winner gets to watch in glory. My kid can do a lot of pushups now.

Be an athlete first, right? Getting stronger is just a small part of it. He’s learning the fundamentals of dynamic movement and reinforcing good habits. He started baseball for the first time a couple weeks ago and you can tell his movements in general are a bit better than the average kid.

Yes, my son has played baseball since he was four. Will play any position but catching is his thing. Hates pitching because I won't let him throw anything other than a fastball or changeup.

Smart not letting him throw breaking balls. A killer 10-6 deuce doesn't mean much when you are 13.

Seems plausible, but ball speed is another issue.

Note that the data might be biased towards more serious golfers who even care about swing speed.

Young players can swing fast some of the time. It’s youthfulness in action.

Scoring really doesn’t matter much before 14 for boys and before 12 for girls. I’d focus on gaining speed without mechanics that can cause major injury. Speed gains can be made later but is much harder.

“Speed gains can be made later but is much harder.” @iteachgolf from what I see in the recent data of my high school varsity team, most kids pick up significant swing speed between freshman year and sophomore year, see modest gain between sophomore and junior year, and almost no gain between junior and senior year. Does this match what you see in high-level or elite junior golfers you coach or witnessed? Thanks.

Can be all over. I’ve had several players gain significant speed after turning pro. But would have been much easier early on.

I'm starting to see natural swing speed and distance gains with my boy (8yo). He doesn't do a particular fitness regime but is playing Cricket and Soccer as well and plays Rugby during the winter months. He's always been short but is very athletic, and I think this is largely due to playing multiple sports. In Cricket, he is encouraged to hit the ball hard and long and you can definitely see this in his golf swing. I think as he gets older, introducing some further strength work will be a good thing!
