Dumped my hybrids...

Recommended Posts

I had been an early proponent of hybrids. Used them for years to replace the long irons, which I had trouble hitting.

I had 4 clubs, 21*, 24* 27* and 30*.

Lately, they have become hook machines. I mean like 30-40yd left hook machines.

So on a whim, I took out my 3,4,5 and 6 irons to the range and lo and behold, mostly dead straight with a slight baby draw with every one! Brought them out on the course for the last 2 weeks and haven't lost any distance and I am alot more accurate, especially with the long ones, the 3 & 4.

Playing happy golf now!

If you find you need more elevation and the irons aren’t working try high lofted fairway woods.

Not sure what hybrids you were using. Hybrid clubhead design can be a factor in "hook machine" problem. Too much offset can create a draw bias for players who square up well at impact.

At your next demo day, try some hybrids with a pro or tour head: these have closer to a square face angle. See if these fly straighter.

Same here...had been playing a 22* and 26* hybrids with similar results - fighting the hook and trying to hold off through impact in an effort to get a straighter more predictable ball flight. Pulled'em 2 weeks ago for a 4 and 5 iron, and while I need to improve my consistency...when I hit the ball properly they go straight or fade slightly which is perfect for longer iron shots. Already seeing my longish par 3 scores improving. Transition to fairways with a 7 wood (20.5*) which has been a much easier club to hit from the fairway with predictable results.

well I say modern hybrids are WAY WAY less hooky

Zero chance, even as a 2 index, I could hit my 4 and 5 irons like my Apex hybrids

This old geezer (68) plays 1- and 2-irons with great success - I'm a Hogan man, and play Apex 3-E, with 1- and 2- irons of the Red Line model. (yes they are extra, I've got a full set of RLs too).

Try it, it takes some time to get used to, and you cannot have too low a swing speed, but you'll probably benefit from it - once your fear of the butter knives has gone.

Tried ditching mine several times, can't stand the way Hybrids look. Every time after a couple of weeks of playing the low irons I end up putting the 2, 3 and 4 Hybrids back in the bag. They are just stupid easy to hit and they are in for good !!!

those are some high lofted hybrids that were primed for replacement by well stuck irons. I struggle with my hybrid (19 degree) but I cant hit any iron 215 (my set starts at 4i so I can only go up to 190-ish). Sadly, I keep it in the bag but never use it because I hook the snot out of it. If you are "dumping" yours mine are currently like "that acquaintance that you don't talk to anymore but they are always around". LOL.

Your iron shafts are probably a lot heavier than those in the hybrids - maybe your current swing prefers a heavier shaft. Some hybrids have really light stock shafts - maybe your hybrids need a heavier shaft for you to reap their benefits.

for me, shaft weight is the most important factor that effects how well I swing the club

I’m moving in the other direction, but from a different perspective I suppose. I’m thinking of ditching the Titleist 915F 3 wood for the Callaway super hybrid. I have a Callaway Apex hybrid and a Titleist driving 2 iron that are about the same loft. I have a hard time flighting a hybrid down, so I often chose to leave the Callaway out of the bag, being I can shape and flight the Titleist TMB, but if there isn’t any wind, I go with the hybrid. I hit it high, but super long. Funny thing is, if I buy a new set of sticks, the Mizuno MP 20HMB 3 iron will replace the Titleist 2 iron and I can carry the Apex without having 15 clubs. So I’m really considering the Callaway Super hybrid to replace the 3Wood. I don’t really hit the 3 wood any more accurate than my driver, and I don’t kneed the extra few yards the 3 Wood provides, if it is lacking in the accuracy department. I’ll forgo the 15 yards if those yards have a 15 percent greater chance of missing the fairway.

It’s actually a stock exhaust with the 2 in 1 baffled extension, it just has the exhaust shield painted black! The only things modern in the bike are the seat, handlebars, tank badges, Buchanan spoke and rim, plus the cable shields for brakes and clutch. Otherwise it’s stock parts with powder coating or paint, with missing fenders. Not many people know what the bike is ?

I couldn't hit my long irons, so I got a couple of hybrids. For about six months, they were great, but then, they started hooking like mad (well...it wasn't me). Then came the high lofted fairway woods. My 6iron is 29° and my 11wood is 28°. A lot of the time, I prefer to just choke up on the 11 instead of hitting the 6.

Experimenting as well. Don’t like the super high ball flight of my 19*/20* hybrids (Srixon H45 and Nike Vapor Fly). Got a 3i UDI that I’m testing. But the hybrids are very easy to hit and provide lots of pop.

Current phase of testing: put heavy graphite shaft in 3i for more pop and a more gradual transition towards the lighter wood shafts. Will see how it goes.

Isn‘t it stupid, with all the tech knowledge around, that a lot of players go straight to a 65-70 g hybrid or wood shaft from 100+ g iron shafts? Trying to bridge that gap better, hope it brings down ball flight. Might also be a hook preventer for those that struggle with that.

I have an Aldila Tour Green ATX hybrid shaft on the way. Cheap experiment.

G410, TS2/3, Apex are not hook machines when properly fit. If it is still a problem, 5, 7, 9Ws are great alternatives.
