I didn't read any hate on any post in this thread. Just because many people have a different view does not constitute hate. In our society today terms like hate, among others, is thrown around so much they loose their effectiveness. There is no hate here. If you want to use a cheaper putter when greens are top dressed or fertilized then do that. Piece of mind is worth it and the last thing anyone needs when playing golf is another thought in their heads. (That's speaking from experience ... LOL)

That said, I have a copper plated carbon steel Byron Morgan Epic Day putter and this is my gamer no matter what the conditions are. I also have a couple strips of lead tape on the sole so any sand will not affect the putter. I always clean my ball so I will be striking it with no sand to worry about. Even if I had a fairly expensive collectors putter (which I don't) I would still game it. With a black oxide finish I would make sure I have an oil cloth in my bag and would clean the putter of fertilizer after every hole with the golf towel then wipe the club with the oil rag. Maybe this is one of the reasons I no longer have black oxide putters in my bag.

I agree w/ the OP 100%. I hated my Spider getting covered with fertilizer. Especially the grooves in the face and for that reason I was thinking about picking up a cheap putter for fall and winter golf.

No. On sandy greens I clean off the ball before I putt, and I always wipe down the putter before I put the head cover on anyway.

I don't worry about using my putter on sanded greens etc, but I do think twice about hitting off of rocks. I make that decision based upon the score I'm shooting and the situation (club championship vs regular round.) My clubs are not family heirlooms but I like to keep the dings and dents to a minimum so if I'm mid-way through a dog round I'll take the unplayable penalty to protect my club. Or I'll see if a buddy will let me use his club.

I take a kind of Zen approach to club wear in that I see it as part of the journey of the club. Nicks and dings on my putter are just a reminder of its history. I hope that in 10 years, my Studio Stock reflects its time with me.

Also that means I don't have to stress about it, which is nice.

No and I have a carbon/Black Oxide head. Just wipe it down and don't store it inside a wet headcover.

I am one that wouldn't be able to keep gaming a driver with a scratched crown, a putter with a gouge on the topline, etc. I've got the OCD where it should be pristine when new, very light wear if used, etc. Once I'm gaming it though normal wear doesn't bug me. But when the greens are sanded, I do take extra care in keeping the ball clean and not grounding the putter.

It's totally subjective, but if I know a club comes with a finish that's prone to premature wear or discoloration I won't consider it.

The reports of paint coming off of spider putters, and seeing in store confirmation, turned me off to those.

I do agree with many who have pointed out that all clubs are tools and not fine china. I’m not running a putter museum either. I am just a bit OCD about a nice looking putter staying looking nice and sometimes if conditions warrant, I’ll go with one I don’t mind getting a little corrosion or a few scratches.

Yes I do, I have an old circa that is raw finish starting to rust I use when it is rainy/chemicals have been applied. Try to keep in car or take to course if I know. Also use ghost tape on bottom of my putters to try and keep like new or good condition at least

No offense taken. I suppose I come from a different generation and the term hate meant something not so good.

 

That said, if you want to game a less expensive putter for less than ideal green conditions then more power to you. I suppose there are places where a person can find a great deal on inexpensive putters ...... lots of them. LOL.
