Iron Spin Rates. TM 2019 P790 vs P760

OspreyCI

Recommended Posts

Background: play 2017 P790’s the release. Looking to upgrade. My shaft is the Modus 105 S .

Spent an hour at PGA SS with 2019 P790 7 iron and 760. Same shaft. Averaged:

P790 164 yds and 4900 spin

P760 154 yds and 6400 spin

Is the 10 yards worth the around spin reduction?

Not sure the 2017 P790 has made my game better. Yes, forgiveness is amazing, but are my scores better...

Yards versus spin make a difference?

The 2019 p790 7 iron is 30.5 * vs the 760 loft of 33*.

The p790 Ti 7 iron is an impressive 28.5"

That is the reason for more distance and less spin, less loft.

Is your descent angle still good with the p790? If the trag is too flat you'll have no hope of stopping the ball on the green with that low of spin.

I am changing out of P790 this season going fwd into P760. Mostly due to needing another shaft for ridiculous front elbow issues again.

I play multiple sets due to my ADD about Golf in general, and most of the irons I've played since 2008 were of forged 1-pc. MB until a one-year run in both P760 & M5 (but kept sig. forged MBs as well).

I found a decent lower upcharge option with a favorite shaft of my past in the Recoils 110 F4 going into the P760, so both the P790 (was CTL S) and the M5 (was Modus 105 S) are now out.

There was a TM delay for my set, so I am toughing out a few more weeks with my old Cally Razr MBs with PX 5.0 F - I do love this set!

I think my elbow issue is caused more often by me as a lefty golfing righty, but I can't only have steel when I do like some range time every week.

Your not the only one who could not spin those P790s. I got some rockets on occasion with CTL - a high launch shaft.

I forgot to look at the decent angle. They appeared on the screen to be the same height. I will say the 790’s were giving me about 8 yards roll out. The 760’s were half that.

Stopping a ball on the green need angle of decent and/or spin. 45* is a good number for AofD. Spin with a 7 iron varies due to swing speed and loft and the ball you use. I prefer weaker lofts to help with my low ball flight. If you don't need help with distance, go 760s. Another option, if you like the 790s, weaken the lofts by 2*. Will help with launch/higher ball flight and spin. A urethane ball will also help with stopping power.

Thanks. I currently play the 2017 790’s since their release, but kept reading about the 760’s. I really liked the feel of them and how consistent they were in the monitor. The 2019 790’s were weren’t as consistent. Hit a flushed one and it went 10 yards farther on the monitor.

As a 10 hdcp, I probably should just stick with my 790’s. They have been good to me. If so had the cash, I was fit for PXG Gen3 P’s and they had everything I needed. Decent angle, spin, and consistent distance. Cant wait for the 760 replacement later this year.

You basically have a good situation on your hands because either the replacement works great for you or you can pick up the 760s for cheap. I completely disagree with the above comment regarding low handicaps needing 760 and high HC using 790. I think the 790 is not a high handicap club but rather a club for the older golfer who used to use players irons but wants to get their distance back to where it was, for the good golfer with slightly lower speed, or for the very high speed player who traps and over spins the ball.

the 760 would work awesome for you given it is a combo set. The long irons are pretty big and forgiving. TXG said it was their most fitted/sold iron this year.

I would disagree as well about the 10 hdcp not playing 760s. They are good clubs and you can game them! Especially since you mentioned they were much more consistent. That's very important to lowering scores. Knowing how far the ball is going to fly and stop. You could also consider a combo set with the 790s in like 4-5-6 and 760s in 8-P. That would be nice! You probably would have to adjust the lofts a little bit, though.

I like that combo I idea because I really and not the biggest fan of the 8-A in the 790’s. I have read other have done it and maybe weaken the 790’s loft by 2*.

Handicap and irons are not mutually exclusive. I'd go with 760s because they are going to be more controllable and they also have a better sole. Unless you really struggle for distance, it's 760s all day.

I know TM says the 760 replacement will be all that and a bag of chips but I think it's going to just be a looks Refresher, claims of more forgiveness and better feel. That may be true but it will be minimal at best.

... I have posted this before but as a + index I loved my 2017 P790's. I picked up new 2019 P790's and look forward to playing them this season. For me they launch very high and with their lower spin they are ideal in Chicago's windy conditions. They are the most forgiving players irons I have played, especially the long irons. At age 66 I have lost a little distance and am a target audience for P790's. Last winter in Phoenix I played 107 rounds in 117 days and ran across a few courses with fast, hard desert greens that didn't even produce a ball mark and on those few courses the lack of spin with any trailing wind meant I could not hold greens, even with a high trajectory and steep AOD. So I picked up a set of P760's and the additional spin allowed me to hold greens again on those few hard, fast desert courses. Not a night and day difference in forgiveness but the P790's are more forgiving. So I played the 760's on the extremely hard greens and used my 790's on all other courses. Coming back to Chicago in June, the 790's were back in my bag full time.

I read that post you made before. Especially noted how much golf you played when when you were here!! Impressive.

I live in Phoenix know exactly what you are saying about hard fast greens. I do most of my golfing in the summer when it is cheaper. Very hard greens during that time. I do notice I don’t stop the ball quickly as I did years ago (younger and faster then) plus with the 790’s lack of spin. I am thinking the combo with 760’s is in my near future.

... I find the feel of the 790's to be pretty nice for a multi material foam filled iron, but it is nowhere near the soft forged feel of the pw-8 of the 760's, which I find almost the equal of my Z Forged. So I would love to combo my 790/760's but the hard part is the gapping between the sets from short to mid irons. Even though I play both sets 1* weak, going from my P760 8 iron at 38* to my P790 7 iron at 31.5* combined with the thin faced foam filled 790 7 iron being a little more explosive than the solid one piece 760 8 iron, it creates much too big of a gap for me.

In my opinion, forgiveness is not much different between the two. The difference for me is really more about distance / spin / feel. The P790s get often mentioned as more forgiving player's irons, which I disagree with. For me, the P790s are more comparable to Srixon 785 (vs 585) - with feel being worse.

I have no idea how anyone could game the P790 unless you’re an extremely short hitter or need a nuclear driving iron.

I wish that was true.

There is a reason you don’t find them in any serious golfers bag. P790’s are beautiful clubs for what they are, but they are typically bandaids for really bad swings if someone is playing them as a full set.

You obviously don’t need the distance, so play a forgiving players cavity back:

The important part is finding the shaft which works for your speed and tempo as precision and consistency is key.

... Never let facts get in the way of your opinion. I have played with other + index players that use P790's and have seen them in more than a few good players bags. Several "serious golfers" here on WRX play them too.

Dude even said when the conditions got rough he bagged the 760’s and that he needed the distance and forgiveness which is why he went to them in the first place.

Good point, however, you called the 790s "player's irons" when, in fact, even using your own description (multi material foam filled iron) they are clearly GI irons disguised as blades.

I mean if P790's aren't game improvement irons we're just reinventing the category. They are sleek, probably the cleanest looking GI's in history, but still game improvement irons even if they look amazing.

Not knocking them as an iron, just knocking them as an actual players iron to be used as a full set from PW-3 iron. If they matched my performance specs I would happily play them in the longer irons as I prefer irons and fairway woods to hybrids, but they are way too low spin and I still expect a specific level of precision even from a driving iron.

If they work, play them.
