Cutting Down a Stroke Lab Putter

Dirkalan

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a stroke lab Toulon but the playing length is 35" and I prefer closer to 33". I naively didn't even think about the stroke lab shaft when I purchased from a fellow WRX'r. My question is, what is the best way to have this cut down to ensure I am still benefiting from the technology OR would I be better off selling and then purchasing a new one in the correct length to begin with? The putter is a LH Toulon San Diego if that makes any difference.

From my understanding, cutting it down completely throws off the balance of the putter. I don't know if getting a lighter or heavier sole plate weight would help. I think selling it and finding the right length would be your best bet.

I think there is a weight in the butt end of the grip.

Yes.

I did the same thing last year. Bought a 35" and didn't realize you can't cut it down without adding another weight and basically ruining it.

Is the weight internal to the top of the shaft? Or is the weight integrated into the grip?

I want to re-grip my Stroke Lab, but want to keep the same weight

In the shaft. You'll have to check grip weight.

I bought a used shaft with the thought of cutting it down to play 33. I got it super cheap so I might try to pull the weight in the shaft and see if it's possible to pull and reinstall. If I do I'll report back.

You can pull the weight. You just need a little bit of heat - I'm not totally sure it's even epoxied in but the heat helps it. The weight looks a lot like one of these: Tour Lock Pro Counter Plugs | The GolfWorks

Once you pull the weight, you can easily cut down the shaft and replace the weight. It changes the balance slightly, but nothing to the point of being unusable imo. If you want it to be exactly the same just purchase a slightly heavier counter balance weight. All the headweights are the same, they just change the weight of the counterbalance for the stock configurations.

I'm not positive but believe the standard grip is 60g-ish.

Want to add my experience with this putter shaft, in case it's useful for anyone.

I have the Odyssey 10 with the stroke lab shaft, (35"), and cut it down to 34".  I pulled and reinstalled the brass weight and replaced the stock grip with a Superstroke Pistol GT 1.0.  I neglected to give any thought to the weight of the original grip or the brass weight.  As a result, the putter never felt right, even though the putter head is 365g, I could not feel the putter head swing during the stroke, (if that make sense?).  After doing some research and learning about the original design intent of the stroke lab shaft, I weighed all the components and learned the stock grip weighed 67g and the brass weight was 40g.  The New SS Pistol GT 1.0 grip weighs 85g, so there was an appreciable increase in counterbalance weight vs. the original stock set up.

As an experiment, I replaced the 40g brass CB weight with a 24g clevis pin and reinstalled the 85g SS Pistol GT 1.0 grip.  The end result is much better, the putter swing feels great.

I cut my v-line c stroke lab from 35 to 33 myself. The weight in the butt of the shaft is less than two inches so it was easy. I cut the shaft and then removed the weight from the cut-off piece and reinstalled it in the butt end. I put the same grip back on and it feels great.

I don’t see how cutting two inches of a graphite shaft could throw the weight or the balance off, because I believe Odyssey uses the same weight in the 35 inch as they do in the 33 inch long putters.

This is mostly correct. I'm in the process of cutting down a stroke lab arm-lock and pulled the grip off today. I got the weight out with pliers and no heat - it was easier than I expected. Weight didn't seem to be epoxied, and it has a lip to prevent it from sliding down the shaft so I don't think epoxy is necessary when replacing it. Swing weight will be effected by shortening or lengthening any club, but my understanding is that when you shorten a club, you should add weight to the head to get the original swing weight back. Therefore, in this situation, you'd actually want a lighter weight in your grip, not a heavier one, or add weight to the head and use the standard grip wieght. Swing weight is personal preference for the most part, so it might be worth testing as is before messing with additional weights.

I did exactly the same (Odyssey Ten from 35" to 34" with a new pistol GT 1.0) but I used the 25g counter core in the grip end. Really happy with the SW & feel.
